Max great video.... And you should consider doing more of these types of shoots. Linhof wow what a great camera (not to mention the beautiful woman 😯). HAVE a great day and Merry Christmas 🎅🎄
A wonderful idea and the photos are beautiful. It is very nice to keep this kind of photography alive. I want to see more of these videos, of course. Keep going, please... Best regards Klaus
Another fine video. How nice to see a large format camera in use - and a Linhof Technika no less. The results are excellent as we expect. Please keep up your good work.
OMG, Max! Those portraits are flipping amazing! Gorgeous models, beautifully shot on a gorgeous camera. *HIGH FIVE* I'm pleasantly surprised how they came out without having to use flash or reflectors. Very nice work! Yep, more large format videos needed!
Hey Max, very interesting project and approach of learning large format photography. And stunning images, they show the beauty of the women !!! And of course I would appreciate it a lot to see more large format videos , portraits but also landscape photography. And I'm very interested in the Linhof Technika and consider myself to buy also one. Thanks for sharing the video ! Lutz
Please more Large Format And nice editing... every time i watch your video it’s like we’re discussing with a cup of tea between friends Keep up the good work
Thanks for the lovely comment. Well, actually Jules and I spend quite some time hanging out with a cup of coffee (usually instead of tea) discussing film photography. In this case we did just that and did the finishing touches on the previous video before starting to film this one. Glad to hear that this atmosphere comes across in the videos. :)
this is the second video I saw today from your channel and both of them are pretty nice, the subject and way you treat your content are awesome. Congrats.!
What beautiful work Max. Thank you for the effort you've put into making this vid. This week I'll drag my 4x5 out of hibernation and take some similar shots of my children. Very inspiring and thank you! Cheers from Sydney - Dave
Thanks for sharing. I've toyed with this idea with my wife. I just PU a Crown Graphic 4x5 that I would love to finally try it. Thanks for giving me a push start.
Analog Insights I also shoot film I should have bronica gs-1 6x7 absolutely love the look of film. Your story behind the birch tree shoot really like that one that's probably my favorite one of your videos keep producing them and I'll keep watching them.
By accident, I discovered your channel while looking for Pancro 400 reviews. What a refreshing way of doing this kind of videos! Granted, I just saw two of them, but nevertheless ... very relaxed, not the typical American pumped up way of doing things. Suits the subject matter better ... analog photography is a slow thing anyway. Definitely will check out more!
Max, the image at 7:10 quite beautiful everything just right! Keep on keeping on what you're doing it's all Good. 4×5 ok but be sure not to leave out 35mm! Nice product placement with the M3. Your last video Jules shot was interesting Daring! Two 4x5 sheets great location beautiful shot. You guys are so inspiring!
RichardvBrown Thanks so much for your kind words! We both really appreciate this kind of feedback and your kind words. Sure, I won’t forget about 35mm. I’m currently on a little trip to Dresden and only brought two 35mm cameras (the Leica M3 and Minolta XD7) and I recently shot an entire portrait session on 35mm. So I’m currently drawn to the extremes (large format and 35mm) after focusing on medium format for quite some time.
great video, and nice portraits!, love the HP-5+ look, the contrast between light and shadow wow! one thing would you reccomend this for beginners, even with light-meters!, as AM realy liking this look.
Nicely done as always! I was just looking at a Linhof Technika III which looks very similar to the camera you were using! I don't really feel confident to really evaluate the operating condition of the one I was looking at but it had three lenses. One appeared to be the same as you're using in the video. If not the one I was looking at, I hope to have the opportunity to try a nice working copy out someday!
Nice portraits and great project. Keep it up. Will be cool to see how it progresses and the end result after all the photos are done.. assuming it will be a collection.
Congratulations for 5000 followers and good luck for "new" channel. Large format photography is definitely interesting for me. So it would be nice to see more videos about large format photography. But I'm not so sure if I like this kind of portraits. For me they are much too close. The models are really beautiful but I find it difficult to reduce them to such a close and unforgiving head shot. I did a lot of pictures in an equal location in the past be I prefer a wider picture with more surroundings. It gives the picture more atmosphere.
Alexander Kirsch Thanks for your comment and support. I should probably have mentioned in the video that the shots with the Linhof are only the very last shots I take. That’s also why the M3 and RZ67 are sitting on the floor or windowsill in the background. For all of these models exists a beautiful set of analog photographs with quite a variety of images. I obviously don’t invite people over to take only four photographs. 😂
I love large format, and my first assistants job involved working with Sinar 5x4 and 10x8. There's nothong like seeing a large format transparency on the lightbox.
Thanks for your comment. Phew, as I am also just starting out with large format photography and haven't even tried different systems yet, I am not in a position to give advice on this. Yet, I personally found the following two articles and actually using the Linhof Technika which Jules used to own most helpful: www.bhphotovideo.com/find/Product_Resources/largeformat1.jsp www.japancamerahunter.com/2014/04/introduction-4x5-large-format-photography/
kb5ql Haha 😆 I actually own a pretty nice cable release but usually prefer using the Linhof without it. But you’re right. That’s not necessarily a good habit. ;)
I guess im randomly asking but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me
@Lorenzo Anthony i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I would add a shutter release cord thingy, would mean that you have less chance of moving the lens out of focus when you make the exposure. Great idea by the way, good luck with the series. In the studio I worked in, 1979-1985, we had deep tank processing and would keep using the developer, I think we used Ifords ID11 at the time if we couldn't get hold of D76, we mixed it up from powder. then we used Ilfofix. Tri-X pan was the film of choice in 120 format and occasionally Pan F which was phenomenal in 120
I'm always happy to see anything you produce Max. Thanks for this one, and that's the best looking Technika III I've seen too. It appears to be a late model III. Have you upgraded the ground glass? My original glass is so dark, and nowhere near as good as the later versions. I'm mostly using a model V now. .. To the project, it's an interesting concept, keeping everything the same except for the model. Cheers, Kevin, Thailand.
Thanks so much for your kind words, Kevin. I really appreciate it. I have to admit that I bought this Technika off eBay and got really lucky from what Jules and I understand (as it was really cheap as well). The ground glass is perfectly fine, but I don't know whether the previous owner upgraded it or not. Glad to hear that you own a model V by now. Pretty nice!
Very cool! Love when you put the black sheet over your head ;-)) longterm projects with such a concept behind are great 👍 Btw who is the video filmer, would love to see that backstage also, good eye and scenes too!
Hi Max, I really enjoyed your video. It would be fantastic if you could show some more videos on large format videos. How do you digitalize your negatives?
Thanks so much for your comment. Glad you liked the video and sure, Jules and I will do more. In this case, I digitalized the images at professional lab/photo studio that happens to have a proper Heidelberg scanner. Digitizing these negatives like that is incredibly expensive but really worth it in my opinion.
Thanks for the video. I like your tight framing. Have you considered a telephoto? You might be more pleased with the image over the normal focal length. Nice work! Thank you also, for the brief developing demonstration. I have seen tanks like you are using but have no experience with them. I mostly use a drum for processing prints.
great video. I'm no large format expert, don't know if you can change lenses on that camera but maybe you should try a longer lens, being that close with a normal lens, the face seems seems slightly distorted to me (maybe that's what you're looking for).
Great video, like all you make. I found that this portraits look softer than if you use Mamiya 6x7 Do you agree? It seems old style to me which is not bad at all. My father was a "gallery" fotographer and his early works look very similar tho this shots. in his twenty final years as a professional he Used two Mamiyas 6x7. So I can tell. the difference. Congratulations for your good work
oh I was looking for the linhof brand videos to understand how they can sell. Was not expecting masochism though :-X (The procedure is overly complicated)
6:15 is your best shot. While I wasn't on set to see how you work, I feel like you're focusing on the camera operation too much and not the model interaction/catching that perfect pose
Great concept and video. I seemed to have noticed a bit of film reticulation with a couple of the images. Did you have all your chemicals at the same temperature for all of your image development instances?
No, there were definitely slight differences in temperature and also the available light and hence shutter speeds in the first place. :) But I don't mind these differences.
so I would like to know why you do not use a stronger tripod, a cable release and why you wouldn't try have all the head sizes the same ( same framing ) Like the idea, good luck with it
Oh dear, please get a shutter release, or 2. You spent money on a Linhoff. Spend 1/1000th of that on a couple of releases. Now that I'm done freaking out, good video boss!
curlyAllan Thanks for your comment. In this case, I had the negatives scanned on a beautiful Heidelberg Topaz 2 at a neighborhood photo lab and edited the TIF files to my liking.
yes very nice to see that the Linhof Technika is still being used.but remember ; develop a film is-- the time - the temperatur and the "movement" from your filmdevelopertank ! for black/white it works the way you work but for color neg./positiv film you better buy a developermachine for equal results.used by ebay -- Jobo Colorprocessor CPA --Jobo CPP2.--and and ....do not throw chemicals in the sink.......wish you all the best
Prajem krásny deň ,dlho som uvažoval na reagovanie na vaše videa práca s velkoformátovou kamerou Linhof .Sám vlastním kamreru Linhof Vl a obj. 3,5/135mm. Naposledy som pracoval z uvedenou kamerou pred 18 rokmi. Vaše videá ma nakopli používať a pracovať s klasickým filmom. I napriek tomu vám želám veľa dobrých nápadov a ďalších videí k propagácii práce s klasickou kamerou. Ako sa u nás hovorí Dobré svetlo.
An interesting project. Would like to see how the series progresses. BTW: I notice your channel & website is MAX+ONE but your Instagram is maxplustwo. Is there a story behind the names?
Thanks for your comment, Steve. Well the story is a sad one: maxplusone was already taken on Instagram. ;) With respect to the channel name, there might be an update soon...
Hey Azriel! Good spot. Unfortunately, our Lumix decided to apply its image stabilization rules to my head movements during the introduction. Jules noticed that and changed the settings afterwards but I decided to stick with this introduction and don't record another one. I hope it's not too annoying. :)
Are you worried processing with all those chemicals in your kitchen (where presumably you cook)? Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'd move all the other stuff, used for cooking. Just wondering, not criticizing.
Thanks for your comment and please excuse my late response. In my case, it is the T mode. Newer lenses/setups have a dedicated feature that lets you simply open up the lens for composing and focusing without using the T mode.
Nice to see young people beeing interested in shootin with the Linhof. Still my favorite camera till this day!
Max great video.... And you should consider doing more of these types of shoots. Linhof wow what a great camera (not to mention the beautiful woman 😯).
HAVE a great day and Merry Christmas 🎅🎄
When Max tells you "let's go home so I can show my camera skills in the bedroom"... he actually means it.
😅
A wonderful idea and the photos are beautiful. It is very nice to keep this kind of photography alive. I want to see more of these videos, of course.
Keep going, please...

Thanks so much! Will do. :)

Mark Hickford Wow, thanks a lot for your kind comment. Really appreciate it! 🙏🏻
Again, awesome work and video. Yes please, more LF photography both people and landscape.
Kern Hercules Thanks for your comment. Sure, we’ll do some more large format in the future. :)
Fabulous Images.
Hey Max,
very interesting project and approach of learning large format photography.

These portraits are beautiful. Definitely would love to see more vids on large format portraiture.
Thanks for your comment, Frank. Alright, then we'll produce some more. :)
Love your behind the shoot videos max , great images , yes more 5x4 please..
Thanks a lot! Glad to hear that you like these videos. :)
lovely shots. As mentioned previously, I dig the large format work!
Thanks for your comment and kind words. Glad you like the shots! :)

Thanks so much. Glad to hear that you like our little videos. I haven't tried a Bronica yet. Definitely would like to do that at some point. :)
Beautiful outcome! I AM DEFF INTERESTED IN MORE FILM PORTRAITS // WEDDING STUFF WOULD BE SICK
Great concept Max - lovely subtle Rembrandt lighting effect on this shoot.
By accident, I discovered your channel while looking for Pancro 400 reviews. What a refreshing way of doing this kind of videos! stunning imagery
Another nice video...well done Max!

Yes,I would like to see more of this series.
Thanks for your comment. I might do a video once the series is finished. :)
like the 2nd girl & the first shot of the last one...but also in total, nice work, want to see more :)
Loving the large format and would like to see more, please tell more details of the camera setup and lens settings. Excellent😊

Arts and crafts can be fun.
Another gem - love it - keep them coming
Luc Makayabu Thanks so much. We really appreciate it. 🙏🏻
Very nice and yes, I would love to see more 5X4 photography.
Thanks! Sure, will do. :)
Loved this video! BRING MORE LARGE FORMAT PLZ
I really like your content. New subscriber here!
wishing all the very best with your project. bless you
Nice portraits and great project. Keep it up. Will be cool to see how it progresses and the end result after all the photos are done.. assuming it will be a collection.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, exactly. I intend to publish the series either in book form and/or on my website eventually.
Amazing Max! The images are astoundingly beautiful. You should hand print them or have limited edition book made of them. Well done!
Glenn Haggis Thanks a lot. Good idea with the prints. I haven’t thought of that. Let’s see. :)

Yes, all of them ! About time !
I like your work very much!
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. :)
Romance vs quickie of the digital world. Very nice my friend.
Thanks so much. Really appreciate it. :)
I love large format, and my first assistants job involved working with Sinar 5x4 and 10x8.
There's nothong like seeing a large format transparency on the lightbox.
Great Video per usual. I'm in increasing danger of trying 4x5 after watching this. I've used 6x6, 6x4.5, 6x9 for my large format so far. hmmm
Very interesting video. Inspires me to shoot more film with my Hasselblad.....
Great!!!Another excelent video! Please include 6x6 Landscape photography. Thanks, regards!
Thanks a lot for your comment! Sure, we'll do some more 6x6 landscape photography as well, taking out the Hasselblad and Linhof together maybe...
Yes! More large format. What would be your suggestion for a beginner 4x5 system?
Thanks for your comment. Phew, as I am also just starting out with large format photography and haven't even tried different systems yet, I am not in a position to give advice on this.
Yet, I personally found the following two articles and actually using the Linhof Technika which Jules used to own most helpful:
www.bhphotovideo.com/find/Product_Resources/largeformat1.jsp
www.japancamerahunter.com/2014/04/introduction-4x5-large-format-photography/
Get a Speed Graphic for the ability to choose between film plane and leaf shutters, and for sheer reliability.
Thanks Max! I appreciate the links, very helpful! Excited for Analogue Insights :)
What's your mailing address so we can get you a proper cable release :) great stuff. 👍
kb5ql Haha 😆 I actually own a pretty nice cable release but usually prefer using the Linhof without it. But you’re right. That’s not necessarily a good habit. ;)
And lens hood.
I guess im randomly asking but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me
@Byron Zeke Instablaster ;)
@Lorenzo Anthony i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Great project and wonderful results for now Max !
Thanks a lot for your comment. Really appreciate it. :)
Definitely some more large format portraits
Cool, thanks for your feedback. :)
I think the best pose that you missed to shoot is at 4:19
I would add a shutter release cord thingy, would mean that you have less chance of moving the lens out of focus when you make the exposure. Great idea by the way, good luck with the series. Tri-X pan was the film of choice in 120 format and occasionally Pan F which was phenomenal in 120
No problem with a sturdy tripod and the Technika that has a very effective focus lock lever
Nice job Max! well done Cheers! 🥃
Love the camera
I'm always happy to see anything you produce Max. Thanks for this one, and that's the best looking Technika III I've seen too. It appears to be a late model III. Have you upgraded the ground glass? My original glass is so dark, and nowhere near as good as the later versions. I'm mostly using a model V now. .. To the project, it's an interesting concept, keeping everything the same except for the model. Cheers, Kevin, Thailand.

I have to admit that I bought this Technika off eBay and got really lucky from what Jules and I understand (as it was really cheap as well). The ground glass is perfectly fine, but I don't know whether the previous owner upgraded it or not. Glad to hear that you own a model V by now. Pretty nice!
Lovely Linhof
That's one way to get women into your bedroom :) kidding aside great project love the black and white photos. More large format projects please!
Haha :) Alright, counting one more vote for more large format. ;)
Really Cool!
Yep more of this stuff and more doing portraits with LF. Love that soft look you are getting. Focal length here? quite wide angle I guess?
Very cool! Love when you put the black sheet over your head ;-)) longterm projects with such a concept behind are great 👍
Btw who is the video filmer, would love to see that backstage also, good eye and scenes too!

Nice shots!
But are you really dumping your chemicals into the sink ?!
Have seen that tons of times in videos..
Sondermüll...
Compared with 20 years ago this is hardly a drop in the..ocean.
Nice video! What lens did you use? Is it a Schneider symmar 150 convertible ( 150-265)?

Wonderful project! Yes, I would like to see more large format reviews/information/techniques/whatever. Anything analog!
Hey Max what film scanner do you use? Great video as always!
curlyAllan Thanks for your comment. In this case, I had the negatives scanned on a beautiful Heidelberg Topaz 2 at a neighborhood photo lab and edited the TIF files to my liking.

Thanks for your comment, Steve. Well the story is a sad one: maxplusone was already taken on Instagram. ;) With respect to the channel name, there might be an update soon...
did you image stabilize yoir head movements at the start?
Hey Azriel! Good spot. Unfortunately, our Lumix decided to apply its image stabilization rules to my head movements during the introduction. Jules noticed that and changed the settings afterwards but I decided to stick with this introduction and don't record another one. I hope it's not too annoying. :)
"yoir"?
Yes. Please more large format photography!
Are you sure you are using the ideal focal length for portraits?
Natürlich sind wir darauf interessiert 😁
Inklusive Porträts draußen...
Gerne. :) Danke für deinen Kommentar.
Are you worried processing with all those chemicals in your kitchen (where presumably you cook)? Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'd move all the other stuff, used for cooking. Just wondering, not criticizing.
Oh, good. I was worried for you. Your videos are great. Thanks -- learning so much from you. Really appreciate technical details. Thanks!
Frank Wu Thanks so much! Really appreciate it. And no worries. :)
How you make to maintain the lens open to see at the screen?? B or T tme??? Best regards from Argentina
Thanks for your comment and please excuse my late response. In my case, it is the T mode. Newer lenses/setups have a dedicated feature that lets you simply open up the lens for composing and focusing without using the T mode.
Interesting...
Hello Max, can you tell me how you are calculating below extension being so close? Thanks.
Am I the only one who is thinking the camera is way too close and have a lot of perspective distortion?
Karl H No, you’re not. :) Thanks for your comment.
Am I correct in thinking that you can use a Patterson four real tank to use the mod 54?
