Weather you understand it or not is it really so hard to call someone by what they want to be called? I mean if you saw a dog and went "how old is he?" and they said "She" you would go "Oh okay how old is she" and question that no further. Why is it with people it becomes some huge issue?
I'm a straight guy that associates himself as a guy, and even I support the positions brought up in this video. It's really not hard to tolerate and respect others, people.
Simple observation: The people in this video put their face and their name on it. They are in an arena advocating for a cause. The input of everyone who's name and face is missing from the comment shouldn't matter. If you can't put your name on it, if you're not in the arena also advocating for any cause, your input doesn't matter. "It's not the critic who counts...the credit belongs to the human in the arena, whose face is marred by sweat and dust."
It was a mistake to scroll down and read the comments. You are capable of understanding and accepting non-binary genders. Examine why you are refusing yourself this understanding and acceptance. This especially goes if you are an adult-- you don't know who you could be harming, especially if you are in a teaching position, have a child, or are around children at all. I was heavily discouraged by adults from exploring my gender identity and learning more about who I am and it impacted my self-esteem. Please don't be that human being! Please do your best to accept and understand others.
We are born with our organs as they are. Can't the 'he' and 'she' pronouns just refer to that without making judgements about how that person(or how that gender) should behave? I mean, I don't like the way some males act, but I am not going to choose to be non-male because of it, I can deny those gender stereotypes without having to force others to change what pronouns they use. This is a genuine question. I don't think I should be criticized for asking someone to explain these things to me that I don't understand. Also, please don't call me cishet male or anything like that. I know and emphasize with people who suffer very well.
It's important to look at it more broadly. Gender diverse people aren't 'choosing' to be non-male/non-female/non-anything, they fundamentally identify that way. It's really as simple as this is who these people are, and respecting that this is what they want and need :)
I'm seeing a lot of positive comments outside of the narrow-minded and offensive other ones. I'm very happy it is this way, but don't be afraid to report those other ones for hate speech, since that's basically what they are! This video is great and super informative, not aggressive at all and extremely important!
Really cool, really helpful!! And really well-shot, too. It can be difficult to learn and remember genderdiverse pronouns, but it's worth it in the long run as I think it makes both you AND the person you're talking to feel more accepted and comfortable! (as a side note, everyone in this video has such great fashion sense wtf i'm jealous)
So proud of Minus18 right now! This campaign is so important for so many gender diverse people across Australia and so impressive it was developed by a bunch of young people with zero funding.
Thank you for making such a polite and understanding video to help people understand this issue better. I'm sorry it's getting so many negative comments from the people who might best benefit from what you're saying. I'm gender neutral and though I tend to be apathetic on what pronouns people use for me, I appreciate what you're doing here.
I really love this video, a lot of the comments are generally disappointing though, genders that are outside the binary are just as real and valid as those that are within it. Our pronouns are valid, we are valid, and respecting our pronouns and identities as such is important.
This is such an important video. The significance and effects of misgendering and ignorance of gender identities were not even issues I was aware of until this year when I started meeting, becoming friends with, and hearing from trans and non-binary people. Awareness and understanding are so vital, and I'm hugely thankful there's such positive and accessible information out there for others to learn from. Thank you for making this!
I think this is a great video, and makes me incredibly proud and impressed that these young people would talk about gender and pronouns. This is actually very important for society. There has been a lot of evidence throughout history supporting non-binary genders (look it up, they've always existed) and today's society likes to ignore that in order to put everyone into neat little boxes. That being said, I cannot believe how rude and ignorant people are being in the comments. Please think of the video you just saw. Why would these people make this up? Most of the response they get in real life is the frankly disgusting behavior the commenters are exhibiting. Why would you fake something for such a terrible reaction? There are much better ways to get attention, if you think that's what this is.
Just read a bunch of negative comments. God, just learn to love others. The way I see it, this video just educated me on how to respect trans people just as how everyone else want to be respected. I found it very enlightening. Thank you.
This is such an awesome resource!! I'm so happy there is something so clear to help people learn how to use pronouns and how to be respectful to gender diverse people!! Pronouns are rad!!
I really needed to see this. I live in India and it really bothers me how narrow people's mentality is here. I feel sorry for all the people who are judged, day after day in this illiterate country. I saying all this because these things are done by people I know personally. They will spot a guy who is dressed like a girl and comment that he is homosexual. What do you know? Unless you know that person, how can you comment and live away. Also gays in India are really unfortunate to be born here, people automatically think that they are females, which is like a pretty big thing to say to some one. Yes. If you call someone a girl, its like ultimate insult, and calling a gay person, a girl is wrong on so many levels. Not because you're calling him a girl. You're saying that he's a girl just because he likes men. A gay man is a 'male' who is attracted to other 'males'. I can't deal with such ignorance. Thank you so much for making this video.
This is really awesome. It doesn't take a lot to be more supportive of people with different needs and identity, and this is a really great introduction from some amazing young people. So proud to have been involved and of the amazing young people at Minus18 who made this!
if you are trans and want to remain feeling respected, do not read the comment section. apparently even when we ask for something politely they still would rather wallow in their own ignorance. be free the way you want to be, don't let the words of ignorant unloving cishet people get you down. there's no hope for them in this world.
Thanks for making this great, informative video to help people learn about basic respect for trans people! If only more people would realize that this is a valuable and completely reasonable message about respecting diversity... learning a few new pronouns really isn't that difficult, and totally worth it to allow the people we're talking about to feel safer and know that they're respected for who they are!
Bless you for making this video. It's lighthearted but still to the point, and it's helping a lot of people. Putting this kind of resources out there is informing those who struggle to understand, and that makes me really glad.
This is a great video. I have a question, maybe worth addressing in a future video: what are some ways to bring up the question of which pronouns people prefer? It seems to me that it's something you'd want to address quickly if you're unsure, but the less you know the person, the less easy it is to bring up. :)
If everybody gets their own personal pronoun, I'm out. It's hard for me to even learn and remember the names of people in the first place. Can't we just have one pronoun for everyone like the Danish?
Very important, very relevant, and a very informative video. Thank you. Hopefully this will help some people to understand better... misgendering can be really embarrassing sometimes, it happens to my brother and one of my trans friends quite a lot :(
literally it takes you absolutely zero effort to call someone by their preferred pronouns. some of these comments make me so mad, who cares if YOU dont think its important? you dont even NEED to understand. you can help make other peoples lives easier but you're so self absorbed you can't even be bothered to rethink a few ingrained attitudes you have to literally say a word three letters long. ridiculous. i think we know who has the real "unwarranted self importance", and lemme tell you, its not the people in this video.
I don't personally share the view that "he" and "she" have to be inherently gendered but otherwise this is a very nice video and kudos for putting yourselves out there.
They don't have to be, no, but because of the way our language is set up and used, "he" and "she" pronouns are inherently gendered. It would take a pretty big shift in our language, usage, and thought processes for it to be otherwise.
I'm just going to throw this out there, because every cis person is suddenly a biologist after watching this video. The two sex binary is a flawed social construct that literally has no basis in reality whatsoever. Some form f intersex characteristics happen in approximately 2% of live births in humans. That’s 2 out of every 100, which in a world with 7 billion people is a lot of people that don’t fit into either “male” or “female,” and that obviously doesn’t include trans* people, which makes the statistics higher. That also doesn’t include the people who aren’t technically intersex, but also don’t fully fit the biological construct of what a male or female “should,” be which is far far more people that you realize or most medical doctors willing to admit. In our society sexing is based on 5 criteria: Genes - XX or XY chromosomes, with variations happening for XO, XXY, and XXX Gonads - ovaries or testes, except that people with vaginas can have testes, people with penises can have ovaries, and people can be born with both ovaries and testes Genitalia - a penis or a vagina, except that people can be born with both and men can have vaginas and women can have penises Secondary sex characteristics - in theory men are supposed to have large amounts of thick, coarse body hair, a low waist/hip ratio, broad shoulders, undeveloped breasts, and deep voices while women are supposed to have small amounts of fine, light colored, soft body hair, a high waist/hip ratio, petite shoulders, developed breasts, and high voices except that in real life it’s entirely possible for people to have combination of those characteristics or for men to have “feminine” secondary sex characteristics and women to have “masculine” secondary sex characteristics Hormone patterns - in theory men are supposed to be high testosterone and low estrogen and women are supposed to have high estrogen and low testosterone but in reality there is far far more variation within “each” sex than between “each” sex including women having “masculine” hormone patterns and men having “feminine” hormone patterns all without those people having any sort of “disease” or “disorder” or anything being wrong with them at all. Once we take into account all 5 of those criteria, an actual majority of people don’t line up with either male or female in all 5 areas, which means it’s not possible to classify most people along the strict binary the way people like you would like to. So, sure, there are things in this world that qualify as technically male or technically female, but the idea that there’s some sort of scientific basis for a strict binary where there are only ever two options, and people are only ever male or female is laughable. It’s utter bullshit and trying to force people into those boxes when they don’t fit does a hell of a lot more harm than good. Nothing positive comes from that kind of bigotry, while actually being willing to accept people as they are or as they choose to identify has legitimately positive outcomes in the world. The main source material for all of this comes from Anne Fausto-Sterling’s book Sexing the Body. She’s got a Ph.D. in biology so I’m pretty sure she knows what she’s talking about, and I’m willing to bet she knows a hell of a lot more about this stuff than you all do. Try educating yourself instead of pretending that you’re an expert because you spent a few weeks learning the bare minimum of this material in high school at some point in your life.
So there seems to be a lot of hate coming from cis people and I got to say that you're all being ridiculous. Although side not we're not all like that I mean I'm cis and I don't see this as weird or a big deal. I really don't see how this should be any harder for people than one of their friends changing their name, it's the same kinda of thing - you used to call them one thing now they want you to call them something else. I feel really bad for trans people that they have to deal with so much brutality. Anyway just thought I'd mention it. (Really sorry if I said something offensive without realising.)
It's not their sexuality, it's their gender. If they're not a "he" (male), or "she" (female) then why would they want to be called he or she? It's not a difficult change to make, just don't misgender.

Thank you so much for making this video. As a 50 something ally this is one of the things I truly struggle with when I meet new people.

Yay! this is a wonderful tool for people with friends and family who are trans! Posting this to my facebook right meow!!!
I like Thailand, where it's the speaker that indicates their own gender when they speak rather than who they're speaking to.
Handy straightforward video! Great job!

Damn so much hate on the comment section - Minus take the comment section away so the kids on the video don't feel cyber bullied by these 'heroes'

This is such a good video, it explains it very well.
Go Minus! Keep up the work and ignore the rude and ignorant idiots. The public need to learn more about sexuality and pronouns!

Don't let the ass holes get you down. You guys are wonderful and this is important. Have a wonderful life.
This is purely amazing, well done everyone!
Great video! Great work on the app! Keep it up xo
thanks for making and sharing Minus 18 :)

Normally I could, can, and do care less about the sexuality of others. But if someone demands I start using 'special pronouns'...
He, she, and they are special?
Wow, proper nouns must blow your fucking mind then. Everyone gets a TOTALLY different one! HOW DO WE FUNCTION?!?!?!?!
It's not their sexuality, it's their gender. If they're not a "he" (male), or "she" (female) then why would they want to be called he or she? It's not a difficult change to make, just don't misgender.
So do you call everyone the same name? Because everyone having a different name must be such a difficult concept for you to grasp as well.
Dude, everyone uses pronouns. Would you like someone constantly calling you by a different gender? No probably not. They just want to be referred to as they identify. It's simple.
Love it
Loved the video. Great work as usual Minus!
Why the fuck does this have 100 dislikes this is so helpful
Love, love, love this video
Lets just settle on he, she and it
i love this, very educating, thank you very much!
Beautiful video :)
Aweeeeeeeesome.
This is a great video! :D
Is it just me or are they REALLY trying to have British accent.
It's probably just British people... talking in their normal voices. Might come as a shock, but the UK is a real place.
Australian ;)
TK3C I could tell it was Australian from the start, you can tell by the high-pitch voice midway through the sentences.
eyyy lmao
fantastic video
:D
You're all so beautiful
OH MY GOD THIS IS SO GROSS EW!!! LOOK AT THEM!!
HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU WEAR A GREY BEANIE ON A GREY SWEATSHIRT! THIS IS NOT TRENDY AT ALL!
jk this video's geniuinely educative, i love the way they went through these lil tips of respect. this is important, as a transguy i get this alot. misgender is not cool, especially if it's on porpous. spread the word and educate others.
I love that beanie tho
WELL DONE
Really to see such amazing resources for the trans community out there! Sending lots of love for all my gender diverse possums out there.
