- Yugoslav People's Army (YPA) was the official army of Yugoslavia from 1945-1992 and with ~600 000 active soldiers was 4th largest army in Europe. This is the last military parade of YPA that took place in Belgrade on 9th of May 1985.

As a small boy, I remember seeing one of these parades and Tito driving past In a motorcade in a big convertible. It was probably around 1972 or 1973 in Rijeka.

Served myself in JNA from November 1984 to December 1985 and proud sharing brotherhood , no hate from any ethnicity expirienced , what a great time
My dad served with JNA in Republic of Croatia in 1968 or there abouts. He served in Osijek at that time. JNA was always on alert and ready to repel any invasion he said. Invasion by the soviets would resemble Ukraine war from what is a situation today. Hundreds of thousands of casualties for sure. I think Yugoslav army would eventually defeat the Soviets in brutal fights.
Also, there was never any cohesion between YU ethnic groups even in the army. Unfortunately. The rest is history. And the rest of Yugo economy was shit . With big army. I'm glad you've had a great time.

IvanTheJerk I wonder what would have happened in the US military declared war on Yugoslavia in 1989 when the JNA was at their peak? This is meant as a military analyst and alt history theories, not being like "murica fuck yeah!" like some American cowboys would chant. lol
Here's my opinion: I would say the US would face the toughest war they would have to endure. The JNAs biggest weakness is their navy which no offense, is shit. Their ships wouldn't be able fend off the US, especially when Carriers are involved which would send pretty much all of the Yugoslav ships to the bottom with quick airstrikes and not to mention insanely outnumbered. (Remember, this was the era when Reagan wanted a 600 ship Navy to challenge the Soviets during the Cold War with 4 active Iowa class BATTLESHIPS!) But the part where it becomes hell for the American military is when they end up on land with the army and marines. The terrain in Yugoslavia is very mountainous with tons of forest which would give the JNA such a huge advantage with hidden fierce sudden attacks which would inflict heavy casualties on US troops. People say "come on, the US kicked the shit out of the Iraqi army in the Gulf War such an ease", but that's because the area was flat endless desert where their new high tech M1 Abrams tanks would be picking off Iraqi tanks with an ease without any problem. That would not be the case in the land battles of Yugoslavia with the mountains, forests and the insane training the JNA receive for combat (as seen the way they fought in the Yugoslav Wars). Not even the new equipment the US were getting in 89 wouldn't be a match for the Yugoslav army. As for the air battles, the US air force along with naval aircraft would be facing a formidable enemy of the JNA air force with insane dogfight going in the air but the biggest bane to the American planes would be the homeland air defense. As seen in the NATO bombings in 1999, they would be facing severe anti air resistance with many American jets shot down but that would hold them off until the US air and naval air forces adapt and would launch tough coordinated air strikes and dogfights which would obliterate the JNA severely. This would take the US armed forces many years and a huge drain on the economy before they can finally beat the Yugoslav army and secure the country but the casualty count on US troops would be really severe not seen since WW2.
That's just my view of the alternate history of what a US war against Yugoslavia before the country collapsed would look like. Please be free to share what would the war be like in your mind. I'm very open to discuss. ;)
IvanTheJerk I forgot the other things that happens if the JNA got defeated by the US. Resistance groups. We Americans would have to deal with Croatian militia (supported by fascist volunteers), Serbian Chetniks (supported by Greek and Russian volunteers) and even Bosnian irregulars (supported by Islamic terror groups and Mujaheddin volunteers). Unlike the Yugoslav Wars, these forces would be working together to kick out the Americans from their land. And that would be a nightmare for the US military deal with in Yugoslavia. If the JNA wasn't enough for the US forces, the resistance would be.

***** Basically it would be a European version of Vietnam but worse. The US navy can easily beat the JNA one but once their forces land and go inland, it becomes hell. The JNA were the toughest son of a bitches when it came with war.
***** Russian army is the strongest on the world, not only US; in WW2, Soviet army was the strongest (with US army). Maybe America first had atomic bomb (1945), but USSR too (1949). The strongest nuclear bomb was/is Soviet/Russian - Tsar bomb, from 1961.

@Skitzar Indeed there was. But let me get this straight, because Slovenia left the federation by majority vote. (more than 80 % procent of the county voted to leave) you call them rebels? Using your logic, England is rebels against the EU?
@Skitzar I see what you mean. A very important thing to remember is that, Slovania had every right to leave the federation when the referendum was signed. Milosevic, who at that time had led the communist serbian party and therefor the government of yugoslavia. He ordered the yugoslav military to take control of the country so they wouldent leave, but by doing that he broke international laws and internal yugoslav laws. That is also what led the other countrys to leave the federation, because they could see Milosevic had so much power and was willing to use it.
Btw, my father was born in Montenegro in 1964. He grew up in Yugoslavia under tito and and experienced these things first hand.

Nie zdziwiłbym się, gdyby te same, jeśli nie scenarzyści, to schematy obcinania głów przez rosyjskich żołnierzy i mordowania pracowników radiostacji przez Polaków.

Realistically speaking, Belgrade was the capital because serbs were the most populous throughout Yugoslavia, because they had the most established army. It's only logical Tito wanted it to be serbia as the center piece. But lets not forget he was a communist, and at the begining aligned with Stalin, thing is you see, Belgrade was the farthest away from hypothetical west, buried geographically speaking, strategically it made sense also.
You don't go around colorade in USA asking for wins on the elections, you do it in the popoulous states cali/florida/new york, the rest are arguably non-essential when compared.

Our ammo factories were inside in the mountains, our 420 airplanes were inside in the mountains, our submarines were inside in the mountains ( tunnels) and could go straight to the see. Our air defense was installed inside mountains , we had recourses to fight in ammo and food for 32 years , everything packed and wrapped up in the tunnels, even factory to produce tanks ( Russian version T34 ) was inside the mountains. Albania is 90% mountains, from 1963 to 1970 Albania was 3 country in the world for defensive war. I don't think in 1000 of years Yugoslavia could conquer Albania. We had 2.1 mil soldiers in 24 hours. 800.000 bunkers in a territory of 28.000 square kilometers. We had 6 submarines in 1965. And the mentality of the nation back then, PEOPLE WERE ITCHY for some war, male female in range shooting every 6 months from age 14 to 75. The system Was somehow like Israel today in army . In 1982 to 1986 we were working to do the atomic bomb but because of the international blockade we could not continue. I m not trying to show off but these are real facts . Today we have no army no airplane no tanks submarine nothing.
