Man, it feels so weird to hear it in the 1999-era sound. But hey, I always knew this reminded me of those kinds of songs! It's rad, and it's also a hidden gem!
i guess im randomly asking but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost the account password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
So cool to hear him working this song out with the Revolution. I like him calling the chord “E” so the band wouldn’t 4get when to change the chords on the cadence.
Interesting how some songs start out.... and end up different by the time they are recorded.... Proof that Prince was always trying different things and let songs grow... "I think I Loooooovvvvve .. this version!"
That's because he's had some time to "live" with it for before the final studio cut...And who knows how long he had the idea before bringing it to the band to start hashing it out.
@@rickstraws92 It’s about as different as could be lmao, in this version the chords are emphasized. On the album cut the emphasis is on the strings and the bass line, the chords are hardly audible. It’s damn near a different song because it’s a totally different arrangement, it just has the same progression
@@rickstraws92 It literally sounds totally different, you can’t even hear the chords well in the released version, it’s all in the lead melody and in the bassline Those few embellishments completely changed the song
This recording reminds me of when I was a student at Berklee. We got our reserved studio hour, just jammin' and this is what we played. It's pure heaven.
U just blew my mind with that fact. That's how it is with song artists. the Muse doesn't last forever. Dylan said as much. it's like the Stones could never have written a song as great as Start Me Up so late in their career.. They had wrote it over a decade earlier, while in their greatest creative mental state. So it makes sense I Could Never was written so much earlier. and as good as "Most Beautiful Girl" is, it's not as complex & original as so many earlier hits. Adds up.
I remember in 1985 he did a interview with Rolling Stone. The reporter talked about riding in Princes car and listening to Starfish and coffee! Prince was always ahead of everyone.
Not by a long shot. Although Dez was a much better guitarist than Wendy (actually she was the weakest of all his lead guitar players over the years). The Revolution had the 80s look, that’s all. Which is what makes this picture looks so cool. But the NPG was his best band by a long shot. Their live performance far outclassed anything the Revolution was capable of.
Whoa that driving beat .. I've noticed Prince had this amazing ability to take the "normal" Parts of a rock song, and eventually delete those parts but keep them virtually by adding layers of instrumentation that Keep the space without having to add it back... Probably why Doves Cry has no bass line... but yet... it does... He could also take 5 different guitar parts and make them sound like one... If you want guitars to sound like an orchestra, Prince was your guy... Such a mind blowing talent on all levels.
Well, technically this IS the original. But this just sounds like a lot of his outtakes around the time - the 1985 version was much better I think - especially with the extended intro on the 12".
Basically all of prince hits songs were written by him earlier during the years so he would actually re worked them and released them later on his albums
We can all find something that this man did that no one did better but U have 2 respect the fact that this dude didn't mind having hits sitting around for several years before he thought that we were ready for them. The crazy thing is that they don't sound that different from what was eventually released. Sounds change quickly, yet it's like he knew that he was ahead of the curve. This dude: old song sitting around for years=hit. This dude again: Needs one more song, that would turn out one of his biggest hits on his biggest album, did it over night=hit. This guy will be studied and revered long after we're gone.
Lyrics weren’t done that’s obvious. Lisa and Wendy were responsible for putting Prince onto Claire Fischer. The string accompaniments what makes this song so beautiful. Raspberry Beret is not a rock song but Prince’s ode to the Beatles.
I think it's illegal to listen to Prines' unfinished work even a work of his art in the making, I just know that this & a lot of other music not meant for us to hear was for his personal files only.
It's there for sure. Bits and pieces of LRC and overall Prince did lot of songs in that mid tempo style as RB and LRC...all in the arrangements I suppose.
Sounds like P's gtr 2 me. The tone and style are similar to his lead work on 'Dear Michealangelo', Shiela E.'s Romance 1600 album, and 'Paisley Park'. & the piano sounds a lot like Lisa.
It's definitely Dez for me, Prince is surely on the piano. Besides during the 1st years, Dez was most of the times in charge of guitar solos, more than Prince.
@Jonathan Williams - To my ears, it's Prince I'm not even certain Dez is on this - It could be from the period where he began missing soundchecks (which this may well be recorded at) before he left, which would make it '83, rather than '82.
@Victor Sims This version is a work-in-progress that preceded Prince's decision to bring in the string section that included Lisa's brother David Coleman (cello), Novi Novog (violin), and Suzi Katayama (cello). The _ATWIAD_ album was released in April of 1985, and the _Raspberry Beret_ single debuted in May of that year. So, perhaps *YOU better recognize* that your claim that this recording is from years *after* the album and single were released, doesn't make sense to anyone... but yourself.
The song was first tracked in April 1982 and was re-recorded from scratch in september 84, so it was written before he started the 1999 tour in late 82. It was released in April 85.
Honestly, this is an amazingly forgettable version of one of Prince’s greatest songs with backing musicians that sound like the cover band at your sister’s wedding. The band sounds tight enough but the music doesn’t sound like Prince (or the Revolution) at all. This version pretty much runs notes up and down the scale, which is why it sounds so boring. They aren’t playing any of the bluesy tones or jazz chords that characterize this song - and Prince’s music generally. And with everyone in the band playing the same notes, Prince's guitar work melts into the rhythm section. There’s nothing there to make it stand out. As for the rest, the differences are subtle between this version and the final recorded version, but those differences make all the difference. The drummer in this version plays a cutesy little syncopation in the last beat of every other bar, which would be fine but the drummer in the album version plays a straight four with a strong rock n roll back beat which drives the song with a sexy energy. More notable, Prince spices up the chorus of the version we know with a suspended 2nd to the I chord, an add 9 to the VII, and a 6 to an inverted IV. These little shots of dissonance add spice to the music, typical of Prince’s usual MO and characteristic of the Raspberry Beret we all know and love. I don’t know where this recording comes from. The singer sure sounds like Prince (of course, I understand that it's him), it just doesn't sound like the music we'd become accustomed to from P and his bands.
It’s Prince. How can you not tell? He has numerous versions of every song. That’s why I love the super deluxe sets. I love hearing all the different versions and the “Live, in studio” versions of the songs, especially International Lover and Power Fantastic. The live studio versions are so great.
@@suzeesix I think you’re right. It is Prince, but this version sounds soo unlike his typical approach to a song - especially one we know so well! I phrased my comment poorly.
