played this in a concert today. that change in key from major to minor brings tears every time i hear it, truly a masterpiece. i’d love to see this in more schools as a way to teach the importance of dynamics over playing flashy notes

the piano version is only flashy notes, its not that hard technical but still dynamical extreme because you play the harmonie and melody with the same hand

Do you recall if the version that you performed has bowing direction marks? This version has none and I’m wondering if Sebelius omitted them in his manuscript?

I am stunned by the simplicity of the writing. Nothing showy. Nothing fancy here.

This piece doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I played it with an orchestra last year, and I couldn't stop thinking about it for a whole month. After that, I forgot the name of it, so it got lost in my memory. Then one day I heard it on the radio and it all came flooding back to me. This piece is so moving, and I find myself transported, especially with the theme that comes at 2:42 - it's just so beautiful. No other piece of music makes me feel like this. One of my all-time favourites.

I know what you mean. I first heard this piece on a stroll through youtube, looking for Sibelius pieces I hadn't heard yet. I couldn't stop listening to it. Then it was in my head for many, many weeks, often as soon as I woke up and often the last thing I heard before falling asleep. It's haunting, like all the best music. I only wish I could play it as you did. I do play in an orchestra but I play flute.🙄

I'm absolutely in love with this piece as well. And Grieg's Ase's Death. I'm mentioning it because I was most moved by them at a performance we made with the strings.

I played this last year with all cellos at a music camp. Fell in love with this song. I’m proud to be a Finn because our national composer can make such beautiful music.
Now I’m gonna send this to my friends so we can play it together

You are in a clearing in a Finnish forest, surrounded by many people that gathered and talked and laughed. It was dark and snowy, you can feel the air seeps into your bones, ignoring layers of clothes that was supposed to shield you from the cold.
At 2:41 someone taps your shoulder, urging you to look upwards, and as you lift your head you saw something move in the sky. Green curtains made of lights grew bigger and bigger and waved to everyone beneath it, illuminating everyone's faces including yours. The Northern Lights was simply hypnotizing. You can now see how the clearing and the trees were covered in snow, reflecting green everywhere you look. Your eyes teared up at the majestic view before the lights faded at 4:23, dimming the earth into darkness once again.
    Sibelius was truly a genius.

I really love this version for strings - I believe I have mostly heard it for piano? A recording of this was used as the credit music for Swedish popular historian Herman Lindqvists television shows in the early 90's, and I've been looking for it for a few years now (mostly remembering the haunting melody at the start and end and not knowing neither title or composer).

It's Sibelius' own arrangement of his 5th and 6th Impromptus for Piano, Op. 5 - this is probably what you're thinking of :)

I was a music major in college for a little while and I was not aware of this piece, and I played the violin. I guess it's too solemn to be played...but it is beautiful.

I really love this piece, it is poetry. I have discovered it on a cd I bought at shop in Ainola. I am really considering to trascribe it for brass, I am a trombonist, not professional, but I really love to play this kind of music
