1:01:33 Medvedeva returns to ET 1:15:18 Shcherbakova - as I said in the previous video, she still struggles with the combo jumps in the SP but was able to get her quad back in the FP (with a 50/50 chance of a successful landing), so I think once she goes back to true competitive form she's going to smooth out the mistakes and actually skate good; btw I really, really love her SP, it's so elegant and delicate and I just hope that she will eventually have a clean SP to justify the given points 1:19:17 Kostornaia 1:19:40 Trusova's situation with Hot Sergei and competition with Kostornaia 1:20:41 Hromykh 1:21:16 Frolova 1:23:39 Zagitova as a host on the TV show "Ice Age", and being interrupted by rude Yagudin with sexual innuendos 1:35:16 Mariah Bell and Nathan Chen with virtual performances for Japan Open 1:35:30 Sotskova's doping violations and ban 1:46:34 Ending remarks on Eteri and Medvedeva
I was literally SCREAMING when i saw that vid from channel one where both Eteri and Zhenya were on their first training and both were sooo smiley and shiney omg I LOOOVE everything about this Russian figure skating TV life show LOL
What a disgusting and unnecessary comment for a 40 year old man to make in front of young woman. What kind of response was he looking for? If he was bold enough to say that in front of cameras imagine what he says in private. Things like this is why I often worry for the safety of young women in this sport.
It’s not really a surprise, as he’s been well-known to be a POS going back years: The stuff he said about Adam & Jason, getting DUIs, getting kicked off an ice tour for getting in a drunken fight when someone tried to protect a female skater from him breaking into her room, saying racist stuff... Just add it to the list. It’s just stupid he keeps getting jobs after all that.
Especially a sweet, inexperienced girl like Alina, whose very upbringing makes her always respectful and polite. He would have lost his job if he was hosting that show in the US. Russian do not have any policies or guidelines on sexual harassment and sexist jokes.
Eva Masters you have to remember it was during the filming and obviously going to be cut, it was recorded by a fan in the building. If he said it during live event he would’ve been kicked.
Stevie Darling and it’s crazy how he’s been able to be sooo consistent with it over the years too. Imagine being 40 and having the same trash personality as when you were a teen! Just when you think he can’t get any worse he does! I’m sure he makes everyone there feel on edge. Men who say such things thrive off of making women feel uncomfortable.
It's an expensive sport, so many talented young people in most countries just can't afford it. It's a dream I had to give up because my family just couldn't afford the expense anymore.
Double Bubble Disco Queen A lot of Russian kids wouldn’t be able to afford it, but because the government supports the sport, they scout out talented kids.
Before they get to National team, parents still have to pay for everything. This is still an “upper middle class and higher” sport in Russia, just to lesser extent than around the world.
Malvina R Good point. It goes back to what they said about no scholarships and incentives in the US. If you can afford it in Russia you might keep your kid in the sport to see them get to a high level because there’s a much better chance at it paying off.
Can confirm: figure skating in UK is dead and buried. The government doesn’t even classify ice skating as sport. When all the sport venues were allowed to open after the lockdown, ice rinks were classed as leisure together with bowling alleys and soft-play areas and kept shut.
There are not enough quality training facilities and there are not enough competitions. Britain used to be at the top of figure skating in the 80's but there was never any investment like other sports get. A kid can have talent but the funding and mentoring are limited which is very sad as it is an amazing sport. It is certainly not leisure as serious kids train several hours a day and the life skills they learn give them the tools to be high achievers in life.
Didnt rusfed say that they only pay for zhenyas traveling expenses like they do for all other skaters, (i dont know if they paid for the apartmetn herand her mother are/were living in) but it was known that zhenya payed for example the training with brian out of her own money, the choreographers she probably paid also with her own money too
@BennetGirl I imagine govt. is paying for T/M and D/S coaches and choreographers. They are working with "the russian skating family" at the end of the day.
BennetGirl because neither Zoueva nor Sshpilband take 150$/an hour. I’m sure that they have paid much less than Evgenia, whatever it was themselves or government.
Yes but she was able to pay for Brian because she had sponsors. Sponsors she earned after winning worlds twice. And she won worlds twice because Russian Fed covered her lessons, training, ice time, dresses, etc. like they do for all their skaters. That's why you don't see many Russians training outside of Russia when they just start; they can't afford it. They can, however, afford Eteri, Buyanova, Mishin, any coach at a state funded school.
I just want to say, imho, this was one of the most substantive episodes of tsl I've heard. From the interview with Ari to both your insights re: the sport in other than russia and japan, Zhenya & Eteri, etc.,etc..Oh,...As a coach of non skating sports for 44 years I sometimes worry about individual coaches and athletes. I promise you this, nobody has to worry about Evgenya or Eteri...lmao. Eteri is Eteri...lol...the the kid, almost 21, is gorgeous, gifted and reeks of charisma and a fighting spirit. If memory serves, I think David actually ran into her in a coffee shop after her less than stellar SP at world's and he got the aformentioned vibe from her...lol. ..hell, it's in the eyes...sometimes the eyes of a linebacker...ha. Anyway, thanks again gentlemen for this episode of tsl...imho, for what it's worth, well done! Coach Hoot
I kinda saw the Zhenya-Eteri thing coming. She couldn't go back to Canada and as she technically still represents Sambo70 in Russia, going back to Eteri means she could avoid the transfer issues Alena Kostornaia was facing switching to Plushy.
@@rahelhorvat1471 It was obvious Zhenya being there with no coach other than on a phone screen was just not going to work. And I think both she and Brian knew it too...I have a feeling RUSFED were involved with getting Zhenya to train with Eteri again. Eteri stayed to watch Zhenya and applauded her for going out there under such a tough situation and getting through her programmes. Whatever happened between them 2 years ago doesn't matter, this is a professional choice that makes sense for both of them.
@@biscuitcase83 yes, that part was an odd vibe, cause when Eteri was clapping and Brian showed up on zoom after Zenia's skate, Eteri and Evgenia were already in bed with one another, just that Brian didn't yet know, so evgenia kind of acted for him on that call, she told him in private few days later.
Kostornaia didn't have any issues switching to Plushenko. Skaters can switch coaches anytime, the transfer window is only for the club. So the new coaches would not get the additional stipend funding for that skater (which isn't much, anyways, especially for established coaches), but the skaters can be coached by whoever they wish. And for high profile skaters, most clubs would be ok with this lack of funding for 1 season for the skaters. Brian said Evgenia had 4 options and offers from other coaches but she chose Eteri.
The problem of the decline in the popularity of figure skating in the world is exclusively in the high corruption in ISU. First they give Adelina Sotnikova olympic gold medal, and then Ari Zakarian says that no one wants to save figure skating. Only the RusFed, which by the way is part of the state program and receives money from the state budget. Only RusFed works for the bright future of figure skating. Or on their own future.
Adelina’s medal definitely is part of it. When I was at school, my teacher told us the day after the competition that figure skating isn’t a sport because of this scandal. He then went off about how figure skating sucks and stuff.
Yuzuru's or Alina's fans never care about "corrupted ISU". Popularity of FS just has the same ups and downs as ballet or gymnastics. Decline of popularity in one country means the rise of popularity in the other.
I figured she'd come back. She has the ability to actually heal her injuries and not worry about being replaced. She also seems to be pretty well off. I think she'll actually have a long career in the end.
Its great to have veterans like Ari Zakarian share their experiences and insights. I totally agree with him that figure skating as a sport is in a critical decline, But for him to imply that his priorities are 'entertainment' and accessibility to skating rinks in these most peculiar times when a disease and police brutality are taking away innocent lives, is absolutely unthinking. All of us here are fans of the sport but what is figure skating next survival and equality for all? He questions the need to wear masks and social distancing and justify his skepticism by saying that people are protesting. Safety precautions in the face of a pandemic and fighting for social justice are 2 separate issues though they are not mutually exclusive. Ari mentions that figure skating educates the athlete in a comprehensive manner but it seems to me he himself needs some educating.
Yes thank you, why is no one else reacting to that. Ari was right, he doesn't understand the protests, or rather "riots" as he referred to them. That whole section was very ignorant.
Mentally and physically- Trusova has the most momentum right now to be the next Olympic Champion. While these other skaters are having issues with making all their triple jumps because their bodies are breaking down, Trusova is CONFIDENTLY landing triples like they are SINGLES. She has a new coach to work with her on artistry.... It is easier to improve artistry vs. improve jumps when your body is starting to slow down and break down
The olympic is in 2022. It is much better to have your puberty BEFORE the Olympic season. Or else it could kick in right in the Olympic season, see what happens with Liza T and Adelina. Adelina have puberty problems before so she get used to her new body at the Olympic season. Liza have huge puberty issues in the Olympic season, she can't qualify for the team. After she have fix the problem, she won everything in 2015 season. I bet she'd much rather to started puberty and to win everything a year earlier. Sasha are not growing much this year while others like Anna, Kamila are growing fast.......
It is not easy to improve your skating skills and some folks excel at the jumps and some at the skills but good edges and speed will help all your elements. She seems tough but I think an inferior jumping Kostornaia still has the upperhand but the politics will factor in. Shcherbakova too. I think Rika will win the Olympics if she can bring some joy to her skating.
I just looked it up and these are some of the sports you can get scholarships for: bowling, fencing, rowing, volleyball, track & field, rifle target shooting... but not figure skating. A few years ago I wrote to the Special Olympics to see if I could volunteer with kids who wanted to learn skating because it wasn’t on their list of sports and they said they don’t do a skating program in my state. 😢
I dont agree with attributing the demise of Figure Skating Sport to retired skaters and their lack of relation to further skating activities or whatever unless they have interest to do so. They have entertained us, they showcased so much hardwork, talent and dedication to the sport as it is! They have done so much already. It is really unjust and hearltess of us to require them to devote the rest of their lives to figure skating when the HEAD ORGANISATION is failing to do its job to increase figure skating's popularity, to attract/support new athletes, fans, to keep the old audience and MOST IMPORTANTLY the organisation is failing MISERABLY TO KEEP ITS INTEGRITY AS A SPORT. The corruption is too deep in ISU. At the end of the day all these basketball players are flourishing as a result of NBA's activity. Famous tennis players keep playing because of the prize money and sponsorship mostly, thanks to ATP's and WTA's activities although they still have their own battles to solve.
@@fatimateresa19 ex wife I believe, although I think they still coach together. No they're both in Hungary, they left like 3 years ago, he has some high up position in their sports program(not just figure skating). Jerana has come back a few times to do choreography though
Ari talks about ex-NA skaters saving the sport, but younger fans don't give a shit about Hamilton, Boitano or the others. He only talks about North America and Russia as if China, Japan or Korea didn't even exist. It's time to move on, the 'now' and the 'future' is in Asia, not in NA or Europe, and I think he also should accept that. They have a global superstar in Yuzuru Hanyu but they don't do anything to promote the sport more. Ari's description perfectly describes Hanyu (2-time Olympic champion who still continues to compete, people from every age, nation, culture love him & follow him to competitions, he's very marketable etc) but he doesn't even mention him. Honestly if things continue like this I wouldn't mind if ISU sank completely. I spent shittons of money on competitions in the past decades but won't follow this circus anymore after Hanyu retires.
I had a similar thought. Idk if trying to get the oldies interested again is the point. The sport features teenagers and young adults. That's the audience you need. Nathan and Mariah are fun kids, people would follow them if they'd ever even heard of them...
Anna is a lovely and hardworking girl, but I feel that of the AAA, she is the least likely to survive into the next season (providing Alena gets it together). The most memorable thing about her is the last year’s dress and now she doesn’t even have that to make her more interesting. Plus from the marketing point of view AAA were great because they were all so different. With Valieva, Sherbakova, Medvedeva it’s much harder. Perhaps they were going for a Medvedeva/Zagitova vibe with Valieva and Sherbakova this season. But now that the actual Medvedeva is there, I’m not sure how that would work. It’s too crowded in the Russian ladies
seems Alina is out, she cancelled all cup events to do her show, so unlike Evgenia, Alina isn't willing to give it a try, 3A's are flipping, they aren't the same consistent as last year, there is also Kamila that seems to be competing at senior level and Evgenia. if Eteri can do smth with Evgenia, maybe Evgenia rises to fame again, while 3'sA will be flipping on their quads.
I agree, but not because she's unmemorable, she's just always been the middle woman between two revolutionaries. She is a lovely skater, and had she been born two years earlier/later she would've been a superstar. For that reason, it's always felt like she's been riding on the coat tails of the other Aliona and Sasha. It will be interesting to watch her try to stand on her own two feet, but tbh, after test skates, it's not looking too promising.
@@Boymanjusri "Not memorable" doesn't mean "not existing" :) The problem is I remember Anna's quads as the most questionable (pre- and underrotated plus wrong edge) so maybe it's better that they are "not memorable" for others :D
by 1.5points? kostornaia's 10pt PCS jump in 1 competition in jgpf caused the same outrage to asshats like you? do you even know about the bonus points?
Thanks for this interview with Zakarian, guys! I have to agree with Ari in that figure skating is dying, no matter how well Russia or Japan tries to keep it alive in their own respective countries. Something needs to be done, but what and how to do it? I'm surprised Ari Zakarian didn't talk about how figure skating is popular in Japan. It's too bad that Nathan Chen is the only top level skater for the US at the moment. He and Hanyu are keeping the competition interesting. Also, Anna Frolova is the Youth Olympic bronze medallist from Lausanne 2020. She and Ksenia Sinitsyna (YOG silver medallist) competed and did really well. They're the only non-Eteri skaters that are pleasing to watch.
Absolutely fascinating interview! Very cool also that he name checked Marina Serova and Yuri Bureiko- they (and have done for two decades now) run the rink in Coventry, U.K. where I skated at from the start, and they taught my sister.
How do you know Trusova didn’t want aliona with plushenko and doesn’t talk to sergei anymore? do you have an actual source or are you just making assumptions?
It’s possible, but at the same, they do have connections to sources who give them info before the news come out. That’s why Jonathan even asked something along the lines of ‘You’re rarely surprised because you usually know info ahead of time, but this has to be one of the most surprising’ regarding Evgenia. That tells me that they do have their connections, but of course, nothing is perfect, like passing along information.
Alexander Lakernik who also was the technical controller in Sochi and thought Sotnikova's Flutz-Toe< was totally fine. That's always been the most laughable aspect of this sport, when the cheating comes directly from the President and it's all in your face pretending this is normal.
@@Essylte ,i've heard- he advocates moving the age limit of the seniors, that made some of Eteri's fans crazy. There is a "silent war" between Lakernik and Eteri.
@@nenavujicin7882 Hah, really? I thought that Lakernik was pro-Eteri. After all, her girls went 1-2 at Pyeongchang, and then the former 3A swept Euros and the GPF last season. Lakernik needs to get Alla to back him up then! LOL
@@nenavujicin7882 Interesting! Does this mean that Mama Alla and him together won't be enough to placate them, after Lipnitskaia failed to bring them the individual gold medal, and Sotnikova was their last resort?
1:43:41 also going to put it out there that ADHD medication stimulants are NOT banned substances out of competition, and the TUE would only be needed for in competition to help focus and in case anything was left in the system. If it was really a performance enhancing drugs they'd all be on it out of competition and in extended breaks
somebody once told me that doping agencies' jobs are simply to make sure their athletes aren't caught, and every athlete at such high levels dope or take something because if they didn't, keeping up with their competitors would be impossible. they were saying this in relation to cycling, but do you think it's applicable to sports like skating? or true to any extent?
I think doping is way less of a problem in skill type sports like figure skating. There's no drugs that give you fantastic skating skills or the correct technique and timing for a Lutz etc
In my opinion doping creates an edge over your competitors by not only increasing stamina but helping your recovery. These athletes train everyday ALL day long. I’m sure that doping isn’t excluded from this sport. It’s still a very strenuous thing for the body.
I'd love to know more about Eteri's sisters and all the personalities too. Imagine a reality show about them, kind of like the Kardashians but actually worth watching!
ANDRIJANA HERE. THANK-YOU FOR A VERY GOOD AND INFORMATIVE SHOW...MUSIC FOR EARS FOR FS FANS. IN MY PERSONAL VIEW IT CAN GO SWEET AND EASY OR BAD FOR ZENYA/ETERI SAGA ...BUT PLEASE DO NOT FORGET....EVGENYA WAS LIKE DAUGHTER AND THE BEST SKATER THAT ETERI EVER HAD ...EVEN IRON LADIES HAVE FEEP DOWN SOFT SPOTS
From Zhenya's return to Eteri I get this distinct vibe of a power move by the coach. It's important for Eteri to make it clear to everyone that she made Zhenya, Zhenya is nothing without her maker. There is a strong line in the Russian press that Yulia, Maria, both Polinas, Anastasia - they all went downhill because they left Eteri. There's another line that says that they went downhill AFTER leaving Eteri, but recognize that correlation is not causation and address the fact that they all left because they felt they were going downhill anyway, and being discarded. Eteri needs to show that the former is right, she tried to do that with Tursynbaeva, but only managed to get her injured beyond recovery, so now she wants to make the point with Zhenya.
there is def. something in this story, and Eteri also took a risk here, cause imagine Evg. doesn't make some progress now, as for injury, I wouldn't blame it all on Eteri, all skaters get injured and not all are coached by Eteri, Braide Tennel had a back injury, but wasn't coached by Eteri.
It is a shame that there is such a huge lack of qualified skating coaches in Germany. We had 2 seasons of skating with the stars on TV here that sparked a big interest of children wanting to join the skating clubs. So many of them had to be turned down because even before these shows the waiting lists had been full. So much lost potential. At least Katharina Rybkowski is trying to get some more exposure for our sport with der_skate_club but what use is it if we don't have the coaches (and the possibility of more private ice time even in metropolitan areas)? Could somebody send skaters from Russia (asking for a friend;) ) I am also comparing the situation here to the the UK: with their learn to skate programme they have some way of getting people started at least. We don't even have anything like it here in Germany. Even if it does not necessarily help to produce top level skaters it sparks an awareness for the sport and interest in the public (and viewers). While I am at it: What has been going on with Eurosport these last few years?! It was hardly possible to watch the important competitions. ONE has done a slightly better job. We need airtime on some of these outlets. That's where so many more people can be reached. You are absolutely right: the sport is dying, rinks are closing and something needs to be done.
I'm from Germany as well. And it I so sad that figure skating do not get the attention, which it should have 😞 regarding Eurosport. This year the ISU did renegotiate the broadcasting rights. Maybe there were to expensive, I don't know, that is why we could watched via ISU Stream on TH-cam. I bought the Eurosportplayer the years before, there you could watch all the events live. Hope they will do this again because I love the German commentators Sigi and Hendry ❤️
Dave, I think Anna Shcherbakova's turn in issue is not just a sickled foot. I think she's turned in from the hip. Don't know if that's going to be an easy fix, but it sure is a real distraction!
Maia has a body developed to the extent of Evgenia and they are 4 years apart, I like her as an artist, but she cannot land jumps consistently, so don't know if she can be much podium-competitive.
I heard rumours that Eugenia was forced to rejoin Sambo-70. it was not really her desire. What do you think of it? And Brian, too, he first said he is moving out of it, then he seems to have mentioned that he could continue helping Zhenia if Eteri wants it. I cannot believe it was her decision. It could never turn this way if COVID wasn't here changing everything.
I just hope that zhenya does use the knowledge she learnt in those 2 years with brian, like i hope she doesnt fall back into the wrong eating ting, that she doesnt switch back to eteris jumping technique because she herself said that this technique cant work for her grown up body anymore, she learnt to jump from the legs so i hope she will stand her ground in those type of things. And daniil should keep his hands of her programm, if someone changes something in thenprogramms then at least let it be eteri herself. As long as daniil stays far far away from any of zhenyas programms
@@triplea_qgb1963 i hope that etwri will be the ine changing it, becauseshe at least can choreograph beter than daniil, daniil can do the programms for the other skaters but he should keep his hands away from zhenyas amazing programms. @@ileana823100 It's not like Zhenya's programs under Orser were choreographic masterpieces. Memoirs of a Geisha aside, they were all dated and uninteresting including her new ones.
So intercollegiate skating is a thing, and it is team based like gymnastics. And Cornell does have a team, we used to compete against them. However, you’re right...it’s not widespread and at the majority of the schools that compete it is a club sport as opposed to a varsity sport. USFSA could do a lot with it.
The biathlon story is fascinating in a bad way, but I don't think that there's something as complicated as this in Sotskova's case. It was just her being irresponsible and not filing her retirement documents in time and then trying to cover up the results of her most recent test with the fake medical certificate. It was quite stupid of her and allowed to make her a scapegoat for Rusada, so they could look all good and hard-working.
Considering the fact that government support for figure skating is much more prominent in Russia, and maybe even Japan (considering the popularity), I think maybe the governments of these countries should do more to promote figure skating around the world. It will come to a point where people will say: why even have a European Championships if it will be 1. Russia 2. Russia 3. Russia on almost every event, every single year. I'm sure the results make the Russian people proud, but eventually many will start to wonder, what's the point? These results are starting to become true for worlds and potentially true for the Olympics as well especially for women's figure skating. Competition and diversity drive every sport, with that said, it would be in Russia's best interest to promote competition in figure skating. Otherwise, the sport will die internationally. it's interesting when Ari talks about this, because it's 100% true. There needs to be a campaign, by Russia, to save competitive figure skating imo. How that happens with corruption in mind, I'm not sure. But, the introduction of quads and triple axels to women's figure skating, make it much harder to be subjective from a jumping point of view. It's progress, but the rest of the world needs to somehow catch up.
Is it Russia's problem that other countries do nothing for their own figure skating? It is like asking Usain Bolt not to run so fast as others are not able to reach him saying it is in his best interest. Western hipocrisy is just amazing.

Juan Antonio Moreno , Yuna was promoting Youth Olympic Games 2016, she was promoting winter Olympics 2018. She had her own ice show last year. Although ISU treated her awful during her last competition ( Sochi 2014) she still does something (maybe not as much as many expected from her but), she is still involved in many figure skating related things. Michelle is more active in politics and I don’t like it. Evan and Patrick got married to their girlfriends and I have no idea if they do something for figure skating.
@@nuneh9359 Yes, I know but, how does that help figure skating? Even her former choreographer, David Wilson, said he wished she would use her star status to give a strong promotion for the sport that gave her so much with tours, movies and performing opportunities for every one, just like Boitano, Witt and even Kwan did. It did not happen, unfortunately.
Juan Antonio Moreno , I agree that she could do more but she is still active compared to many others. Now there are many famous skaters in South Korea and she helps them with everything she can, she invites them to participate in her shows. ISU has the responsibility of developing this sport but they make so many controversial decisions that the famous skaters don’t want to be included in this. ISU does nothin serious to develop and promote this sport.
Juan Antonio Moreno, and Yuna could have retired after Vancouver because she was not motivated enough to continue but she still decided to compete and help figure skating and what did they do with her? They made many controversial decisions during Sochi 2014 and gave other younger skaters the same PCs as to Yuna, Carolina and Mao. This was not fair because the more experienced skaters competed so many years to earn high PCs and girls who came yesterday got almost the same PCs although they didn’t have the same skating skills.
Completely agree re: Shcherbakova's torso. I have always found the way Eteri's girls jump to look labored but she really is trying to muscle thru them and they are shaky.
Jonathan, I'm also horrified I used to like Yagudin. Ugh. I haven't watched DWTS since the Adam season & the loss of Bergeron (the only funny, irreverant part of the show) is yet another reason to never watch again.
Her going back to Eteri just makes so much sense after the fact. I don't think she'll accomplish anything more in her career other than a GP medal or two, at best she could make the team event at the OG if other girls really fall off, but it sets her up well for some kind of future career in Russia whether it be commentary or coaching. All the unreasonable hurt feelings that she dared to leave a Russian coach should settle down now. And she's so insanely popular and influential anyway, I think in the end it'll be the right move for her.
Yes, I agree. She needs to skate in Russia and returning to Eteri she is back in the good books of Russian Figure skating federation. I won't be surprised if TAT gets her TV commentator job back. I just hope Evgenia does not overexert herself... both she and Eteri are so ambitious, I think she may get a trauma that will end her career.
Evgenia was upset with Eteri helping Alina scoring her gold medal so she left but after leaving she realised her Flutz , her UR and mistakes are being called & her GOEs are Low so she decided to return. If it is just Covid situation which she couldn’t go back to train in Canada, she could have trained with any other coaches in Russia ? Could have been Buyanova, Mishin, plushenko, etc... but well she returns to eteri says she wanted higher scores and more shows probably.
Plushenko has his own rink, and she has no enough money , mr Mishin is in St Petesbourg (while Evgenia is in Moscow), Evgenia trained in Buyanova CSKA for a while . Eteri was TAT's decision, not Zhenya's, TAT is Zhenya's protector , but i think that Zhenya is still formally a memeber of "Sambo 70", she attends university (Sports Management) within "Sambo" .
Lovely listening to “old school skaters”. Jo-Jo and Ken came across to South Africa with John Nicks to train us in a holiday course for 10 days ! This was around 1975 Jeremy and I were silver medalists SA, I was only 14 years old then !
Sorry, I'm not fluent in English and I want to ask: how to spell the name of the element that Ari Zakarian is speaking of at the beginning of the video, that Shoma and Alexandra also do in competition? I don't know how to write it ;)
@@MMG1800 Well according to Hot Sergei's birthday post to Aliona, their working relationship exceeds either of theirs with Eteri. They've been working together since she was a fetus, and he single handly taught her the 3A in under a month. I'd probably go with him too.
It is probably too early to tell if the move was correct. I was underwhelmed by Anna's jumps, FS program and dress. Plushenko paid for a top notch FS program and let her skate her SP under music she connects with. I want to see her 3A back, as well as flawless FS. I think she would have struggled to get any of these under Eteri. Also, you could see that Aliona was never as close to Eteri as Anna or Alina. Now with Medvedeva back, Aliona's decision looks even wiser.
Eva Masters “top notch program” it will be choreographed by skype. Bold to assume it will be much better than Evgenias one. Or even Rika’s SP of last year. Not all Shae programs were amazing.
also, for some reason every time Yagudin makes a nice comment about someone's dress he feels the need to add a little remark about how he is a man and he is sorry (like boys can't comment on dresses???). and for someone who feels like a man shouldn't make comments about costumes he does it quite often!
I am not buying that Mr. Orser isn't upset that Eugenia Medevia left Canda to go back to Russia to skate. I get it that Covid 19 is a large part of the decision however, I also think that Eteri had a say in Evegenia Medevia's training back in Russia. I mean Eteri lost some of her top skaters. Realistically, do you think that Evegenia has a shot at making the Beijing Olympics?
Not that my opinion matters but I feel like her 2022 prospects were slim last season. Everyone would have had to be injured/falling apart for her to go and even then her bonus wouldn’t have been enough to make an impact. Now that everyone is in this ‘transition’ phase and she has the Eteri bonus her prospects got a lot better. Also, the PR of her going as a ‘veteran’ would look good for rusfed and eteri. She’ll probably get that team gold doing the short and as for the individual medal :/ tbd.
We in Russia don't believe it ourselves. But she skates for sponsors and ate grass to be easy for the quad. To see the quad from Eugenia, it is priceless.
Not sure why he'd be upset. There are no options. She has to be in Russia to compete and can't go back to Canada. Honestly he might be relieved not to deal with the drama anymore. She didn't bring it, but it was still there. I think it's unlikely she makes the team unless Sasha, Anna or Aliona fall off. Then you have to Kamila to consider, who is obviously being groomed for 2022. So say if Aliona never gets her 3A back, you still have Kamila to worry about. Basically she'd have to rely on the 3A's+Kamila losing their jumps. Plus she has back issues and isn't healthy herself and under Eteri isn't going to get any healthier
Thank you Ari! I agree. Adam tried by skating on his you tube channel. He should have Old timers trying to skate! Give Adam a show. He’s perfect representation for the sport! There should be more reality tv after the Kiss and cry area, etc.
As always I'm so late to the party but I am enjoying the conversation! I suppose there is no way to translate the videos from Cup of Russia? I feel silly for asking but I love watching them but most times I'm not able to really hear the skaters names when announced.
The interview with Ari was AMAZING!!!! I love to read/hear more about his life story from Armenia to USSR to USA to Russia. I love his passion about this sports. It is rather sad about where figure skating is at in US compare to the Nancy Kerrigan/ Kwan days. Unless US ladies start to win at the World's, it's going to be a loooong time before we see resurgence of figure skating in US. Nathan is fantastic but sadly he's the wrong gender and popularity of figure skating has always depend on ladies not men in US. Japan, on the other hand, is a different story. Kinda glad and very surprised to see Zhenya back with Eteri. I think it would be good for them mentally for both to resolve their past issues and move on. It should be interesting to see who Russia sends to World's next year... if there is a World's next year.
So you sqid you would make another video aboutthe zhenya returning to eteri situation and with the alledged situation of sasha not interacting with rozanov? Can you tell us when those vidoes may be ready and uploaded?
I think RusFed "ordered" Evgenia to go back to Eteri. Like you said, she is funded by RF and they have a say in it. Evgenia and Eteri had no say in this matter methinks.
Lol! Etheri and Med have enough money to be free of RusFed orders. By the way it is strange, that Etheri took Med back, she has at least 4 skaters age eligeble for Olympics.
That's a possible scenario given the fact that after test skates Medvedeva was saying how she couldn't wait to return to her "figure skating home" in Canada. Everything has to do with medals and mainly money. Before the Olympics Medvedeva stated firmly in an interview how she would never leave Eteri, then she lost the gold medal and went to Orser and suddenly she was giving interviews about how she finally learned to enjoy skating etc. No matter what she said however, there were no results. Now suddenly she went back and everything is ok. Whatever.
@BennetGirl well, Daria has decent base value, she lacks only ultra-C elements. Few years ago her base value was enough for medals of adult WC and still not bad.
All that conspiracy theories of Etheri forcing(!!!) Med to return are stupid as hell. Etheri has at least 4 applicants besides Alina for Olympics 2022. Eteri doesn't need Med at all. On the other hand we have Med being totally uncompetitive in her current shape with zero chances to make it to Olympics. It's a decent reason to kill her own pride and ask to return.
@@lillian2376 no, he said that Etheri had a meetind with Med, and then Med joined the club once again. But who was the initiator of that meeting? I doubt it was Etheri.
When T v stopped doing the personal stories of the skaters in the 90s , it killed the sport. On a personal level, the stories sucked you in to the skaters on a personal level.
Who taught Anna S to jump quads? Her quad flip was basically a triple with that amount of pre-rotation. Anna is such a lovely skater, this poor jump technique is doing her zero favours
Anna is under immense pressure this season. She is Eteri's one hope at senior level and although now Evgenia is back, Anna remains the only senior Russian female skater with a quad. And remember Eteri wants to prove she is better than Plushenko. And Alexandra has an athletic built that is unmatched, so her quads are likely more sustainable. Aliona does not need quads if she restores her 3A. If history is any indicator, 3A is easier to maintain than a quad for a female skater, but again we do not have a lot of history. I wonder how Anna will score at the 3nd of this season with another 5-6 months of growth and substantial risk of trauma. I certainly pray that she stays well and healthy (physically and mentally).
@@evamasters5028 I hope so too. Now that zhenya's back, I think that will take some of the heat off of her. But as we saw, her 4f was cheated using a full blade takeoff which was so clear when slowed down. I just wish the scoring reflected the quality of her elements instead of letting her go on and compete using wrong techniques, making a fool both out of her and the integrity of the sport.
Dave, I thought the same exact thing about Masha after reading Rodchenkov’s book. I even thought of the same example you quoted from the book. I would highly recommend reading the book.
So much with Evgenia being forced to joined Eteri’s team 😂 come on. She’s not being forced. Evgenia had already left Eteri to Canada on her own will. She talked about her wanting to improved jumps and be healthy when actually she left angrily bcos Eteri had groomed Alina to getting the Olympic Gold. I have respects on Eteri for taking her back though.
Great job guys. Jonathon YSL suits you (side note might be a bit early to wear such a sweater as it is still summer - but you are working it. Good fashion!!!) It really sounds like and looks like the Russians are in trouble between growth/puberty and injuries. Rhika, ET, Korea his is your chance. I wonder if the problems of the 3A's, absence of Alina if this opens he door for either Liza or Evgenia - though her injuries are an issue. pure drama is Russia!
I hope Evgenia takes what she has learned from Brian and does what she has to do to make sure she doesn't get injured. Who know when she would have gone back to Canada so I guess it's good she and Eteri can put aside what happened and work....still disappointed but I can understand it to some degree......best of luck to her. She still has a lot to offer and be competitive
I need to have an interactive hate-watch with Dave of everything Tyra. I have been hate-loving her since the Tyra talk show . When Dave did the bit with 'I'm holding two pictures...' I knew; he is my people. I have been trying to warn the world of the Tyra and all I got were blank stares. Look at what she has done, since! Enough; I need to go to bed😂
1:01:33 Medvedeva returns to ET
1:15:18 Shcherbakova - as I said in the previous video, she still struggles with the combo jumps in the SP but was able to get her quad back in the FP (with a 50/50 chance of a successful landing), so I think once she goes back to true competitive form she's going to smooth out the mistakes and actually skate good; btw I really, really love her SP, it's so elegant and delicate and I just hope that she will eventually have a clean SP to justify the given points

You are a God send, LOL. Thanks!
The fact that Yagudin has daughters makes his comments even more disgusting.
“The government supports figure skating in a big way.” Sums up why every other country can’t compare right now.
We are living in market driven society. The Government is spending tax payer’s money. It’s not someone’s vanity project.
Can confirm: figure skating in UK is dead and buried. The government doesn’t even classify ice skating as sport. When all the sport venues were allowed to open after the lockdown, ice rinks were classed as leisure together with bowling alleys and soft-play areas and kept shut.
Canada is similar too. A lot of people don’t think figure skating is a real sport. It’s just not popular.
That shocks me, I thought figure skating was much more popular in Canada. At least compared to here in the US where it’s pretty niche.
How sad 😔
@Victor Alexander I'm sorry what? Anti-white? You're delusional...
Look at Jonathan! Nice sweater! It was a risk & it paid off! 10s across the board.
Yes! It looks so cozy
Chris Schmaltz he seized the moment and made it his own!!
One day it will be Eteri, Sergei, and Evgenia at the boards...which is why Dani G is a bit salty
@BennetGirl wait, what were the other scandals? I was unaware! What happened with Tarasova?

I must say, I didn't see it coming, but there was an odd vibe during test skates.
@@rahelhorvat1471
It was obvious Zhenya being there with no coach other than on a phone screen was just not going to work.
@ Helen: Yes, she choose Eteri. Eteri and RSFed made her an offer she could not refuse.
Dave... where is russian dave narrating this drama? I demand answers...
It is coming in the next day or so. I have been working on it!
OmG yes please. That " thick, heavy" russian accent makes it fun...lol
Btw Elizabet Tursynbaeva is also back in the game )) She just posted a content from the training from Khrustalny) Eteri is really busy nowadays)
That's great news...Lizbet was doing so good before her injury.

Have been waiting all week for Medvedeva content, but actually really enjoyed the Ari part!
Oh I have soooo been looking forward to this since the moment I heard about Medvedeva x
Me to.
That whole section was very ignorant.
coincidentgally, the 21st of September is Armenian Independence Day so Happy Independence Day, Ari.

Rahel Horvat there’s still daria
I agree, but not because she's unmemorable, she's just always been the middle woman between two revolutionaries. She is a lovely skater, and had she been born two years earlier/later she would've been a superstar. For that reason, it's always felt like she's been riding on the coat tails of the other Aliona and Sasha. It will be interesting to watch her try to stand on her own two feet, but tbh, after test skates, it's not looking too promising.
Three quads; including 2 quad Lutz and 1 quad Flip is nothing for you?
@@Boymanjusri "Not memorable" doesn't mean "not existing" :) The problem is I remember Anna's quads as the most questionable (pre- and underrotated plus wrong edge) so maybe it's better that they are "not memorable" for others :D
Okay yeah, Anna's short program score was ridiculous. We can agree on that.
Yes, the "sickle" foot! Exactly!
The FS score was equally silly.

That's always been the most laughable aspect of this sport, when the cheating comes directly from the President and it's all in your face pretending this is normal.

somebody once told me that doping agencies' jobs are simply to make sure their athletes aren't caught, and every athlete at such high levels dope or take something because if they didn't, keeping up with their competitors would be impossible. they were saying this in relation to cycling, but do you think it's applicable to sports like skating? or true to any extent?
I think doping is way less of a problem in skill type sports like figure skating. There's no drugs that give you fantastic skating skills or the correct technique and timing for a Lutz etc
@@benbailey159bb lol but like those things matter these days
In my opinion doping creates an edge over your competitors by not only increasing stamina but helping your recovery. These athletes train everyday ALL day long. I’m sure that doping isn’t excluded from this sport. It’s still a very strenuous thing for the body.
I read this comment to the tune of Smash Mouth
Great interview, Ari's perspective is so complete about the future of figure skating. Thanks for this episode.
Who is Maria?
@@SamKreinberg sorry, wrong name. I meant Daria. Daria Panenkova
Now let me just fanfic in my mind about a world where Zhenya joins Plushenko instead of Eteri so the tea could have been hotter ☕☕☕
I need a wattpad series😂
Maia has a body developed to the extent of Evgenia and they are 4 years apart, I like her as an artist, but she cannot land jumps consistently, so don't know if she can be much podium-competitive.
She reminds me more of Maria Sotskova, tall, very long limbs
He already said he’s going to change parts of her programs.
@@triplea_qgb1963 i hope that etwri will be the ine changing it, becauseshe at least can choreograph beter than daniil, daniil can do the programms for the other skaters but he should keep his hands away from zhenyas amazing programms. If zhenya skates the next season next year still under eteri i wish that eteri and zhenyanchoreograph her programms, without daniil . I mean zhenya already choreographed in my eyes amazing exes by herself, see experience or beautiful mess, so if she and eteri choreograph together that could mean really amazing programms . As long as daniil stays far far away
Too late, he’s already said they’re gonna add transitions and “tricks”
@@helenamargot0403 again i hope it will at least be eteri who think of what to change or to add because she at least can choreograph, daniil is a disaster waiting to be happening most of the time, and he spoke quite arrogantly in that interwiev sorry daniil but shae lynn and j. Buttle( is the name correct? ) are way better choreographers than he
@@ileana823100 It's not like Zhenya's programs under Orser were choreographic masterpieces.
@@oleczekr8528 It will be a problem for Russia when and if figure skating at the winter Olympics is canceled due to a lack of competition and interest. Usain Bolt is just one person.
@@MC-pm3gp Oh yes tell me more) "Usain Bolt is just one person", - do you mean if my facts do not suit your theory then it is a problem of my facts? ''It will be a problem for Russia when and if figure skating at the winter Olympics is canceled due to a lack of competition and interest'' - yes, I agree, it is always Russia's fault
@@oleczekr8528 My theory? Did you watch the video? Ari Zakarian has worked with every modern figure skating legend. I think he knows what he's talking about when he makes the claims he does. I think you may want to check the facts.
@@oleczekr8528 Agree. Last year people complained about 3A winning Euro Cham, they said Euro Championships should be called Ru Cham. It is so ridiculous.
Even Anna's flutz are called and deducted, her other tech. scores are well enough.
By the way, Maria Sotskova is robbed in 2017 Euro Cham. They try so hard to not having a Russian podium by giving bronze to Carolina kostner, while even Carolina herself shook her head in disapproval after her performence with a few falls and mistakes.
So it is Russia's fault for having great skater and naturally winning?
What about rhythmic gymnastic? Russia is always winning. Well deserve winner not appreciated but to be blamed?
Well maybe we should be get used to the "West" that usually their self interest is the only reason, the only logic, the only fact.
When a powerful country's president started to joke about patients and sickness, making daily racist comments, blaming a developing country which facing a whole new virus, notified WTO within 24hrs, lockdown the city within 48hrs, set travel limit by herself. Sanity is dead.
They always like to blame. It is always somebody, some other countries' fault when they are not the winner.
And they like to vilify and scandalise the winner.
Have seen numerous comment about Russian gymnast/ skaters are cheated/ starved/ abused/are used and thrown away, etc. All Asian are "underage" look too young to compete, etc.
He is sooo right. What are Yuna Kim, Michelle Kwan, Patrick Chan, Evan Lysacek doing?
I miss Tom so much!
@@TheSkatingLesson I'll bet. He got the show was tacky, but fun.
40:38 what does Ari say being on the ice produces that makes the body stay young? Does anyone know what research he is referring to?
1:13:24 Maya Kromykh starts with “h” in the back of the throat and ends with that sound as well
Lovely listening to “old school skaters”.

Sasha is only working with Mikhalov, Ilynikh and Plush, while Aliona works with Hot Sergei
Based on Kostornaia's latest video upload on IG, it seems Elena is also helping Aliona.
@@evamasters5028 Alina NEVER was close to Etery. Their relationship always has been complicated. See Marina Hoffman IG.
The mallet foot never hurt Yuna. I think Anna looked good in her LP (I haven't seen the short). But still, she's like Evgenia-lite.
By the way, Anna Frolova's main coach is Sergei Davidoff. That woman-coach beside her is probably his assistent.
Agree that Russian skaters will not let you get bored even during quarantine. Hello from Russia. 😆
Make club skating part of the NCAA, huge change. Also Karen Chen does compete at some of the club competitions
Armenia was a part of USSR at that times, when he was born.
I think they hit a lot of nails on the head with skating in the USA. I mean we don't even have real college level skating

...He knows too much and cannot be bought...
I think RusFed "ordered" Evgenia to go back to Eteri. Like you said, she is funded by RF and they have a say in it. Evgenia and Eteri had no say in this matter methinks.
I think eteri does have a say in this.
Politically this is a great win for Eteri. A very timely boost for her after the fiasco with both Alexandra and Aliona leaving.
It's a decent reason to kill her own pride and ask to return.
danil said that after test skates eteri told him she was going to have a meeting/talk with zhenya and that she invited her back

Eteri said during an interview on kanal 1 that she wanted to help and offered to coach Evgenia.
That 4f was a full blade as well!!
Triple Floop
Dudakov

She talked about her wanting to improved jumps and be healthy when actually she left angrily bcos Eteri had groomed Alina to getting the Olympic Gold. I have respects on Eteri for taking her back though.
Evgenia went in a cast before the Olympics, you couldn't think about gold. In the beginning, the whole thing was a farce.
Great job guys. Jonathon YSL suits you (side note might be a bit early to wear such a sweater as it is still summer - but you are working it. Good fashion!!!)
