Also fun fact final fantasy 11 was squares Golden child for decades It literally saved the company from bankruptcy after the failed spirits within movie. Square leaned on the profitability of final face 11 for year after year to recover. Only 5 years or 6 years after final fantasy XIV came out did it surpass final fantasy 11's revenue finally.

FF11 was my first MMO. I still have a lot of fond memories of the game and how brutally hard it was. FF1 didn't hold your hand like modern MMOs, it punched you in the face and then mocked you for thinking you knew what you were doing. What an experience.

I play games because I feel like life does that to me enough, and want to feel powerful

back in the day everyone wasn’t necessarily min/maxing from the jump. it was more about exploration and partying up to get through story content. people literally halfway lived in game it was a sort of escape.
it was so vast and interesting relative to anything else going on while still having all the final fantasy charm.
so by modern standards, yeah very frustrating stuff. Though it made it feel more organic and immersive vs. quest icons and waypoints to everything important.

"Paying a monthly sub and not getting any new DLCs" the game is actually still getting updates to this day! They're not super frequent but I believe the latest expansion wrapped up like just last year? I don't play the game but I do get notifications on any new patches that release and one just came out the other day, however I believe most of it's end game related.

  • @pragmat1k
    @pragmat1k หลายเดือนก่อน +18

So when it comes to Final Fantasy XI, because of the state of end game more or less requiring daily login to play a few hours for grinds that can last up to a year, my recommendation to those interested is get the game, pay the first sub or two, clear the full story, treat it like a single player game, enjoy your time, and move on. I started playing in 2004 when the game launched in the US.
Inventory cap is 80, not 60, you also get a mog sack, mog satchel, mog case, lots of extra storage. Plus you get wardrobes for your equippable items. There is an option to auto sort your inventory to items will auto-stack.
When it comes to the story, because FFXI was originally designed to be horizontal, you didn't need previous expansions to play current ones, the narrative is more story driven rather than character driven like XIV. When it comes to MMOs XI still feels like home to me after playing for so many years. I've taken long breaks, but I always come back because I miss it. Your experience on servers will vary though because of huge population differences. The game has also reached a point where savvy users will create multiple accounts and run them as bots. Think of it as a fancier version of the Trust system, which is usually not enough to let you make good progress on end game content, but it is enough that you can still comfortably do MSQ and side quests.
The game is charming, I love the art style, the armor designs are better than most of what's in XIV to me, the music is nostalgic. I've loved my time in XIV over the last 20 years.

I know some retail people are hesitant to try private servers but it's crazy how much of a better experience it is, Horizon XI for example has:
      - it's free (it's highly speculated that Ninja pays all the costs of running the server)
      - 1 click installer and login (no PoL)
      - Addons built right into the launcher, can click them on and off, including UI addons
      - Active GMs who monitor for cheaters and respond to tickets
      - High player population and because dual boxing is forbidden every player is really a person and not someones 5th bot account.

That was the biggest stop gap for a lot of players upon US release... the game does not hold your hand at all, not days there are tutorials but starting out... you had a booklet guide that is it... figuring it out is part of the fun(as you seen). As a huge XI fan, the game needs some love as there is so much content, like a mountain of story you can do.. such a good game and when 1.0 XIV released all those years ago we had hoped for something similar but alas wow semi clones are popular with the masses compared to grindy, hard, social MMOs. While they have made it more user/solo friendly over the years with trusts, grouping used to be mandatory, no getting around it, ever. Well, unless you took up beastmaster, which in itself was a grind but rewarding. I come back to the game often and love to see people doing first time gameplay of this game, great video! Also additional note, you can sort and auto stack by turning auto stack on, which I swear needs to be on by default. If you ever consider giving it another go by all means, pm me. Learning the ropes is fun, but doing it solo can be daunting to see the real light shine!

I was a 13-year-old kid living in a third-world country at the time XI released, and while online gaming wasn't exactly off the table, it was definitely not as ubiquitous as it is nowadays. I can definitely say that if I'd had the chance to play FFXI on release, I would have 100% become addicted to it. Though my taste in genres was broader when I was younger, RPGs were (and still are) my favorite genre... and the prospect of being able to go adventure with OTHER PEOPLE would have likely blown my mind lol.
Anyways, I've been playing FFXIV since 2.0 beta and I'd always been curious about FFXI. These games are clearly just different experiences. You play them over the years and develop an attachment to them the likes of which isn't found in other genres. Think I'll try FFXI out at some point... I'm kinda dreading interfacing with it since I've gotten SO used to the XIV cross bar haha... but that's fine, will adjust.

I actually just bought this game again three days ago and started playing after being gone since... 2010? So many memories I had in this game with my friends, plus all the new friends I made. I never even hit a level 75 despite playing the game for years. Playing now just makes me sad remembering the long past fun times of yesteryear. Every zone I enter brings back a memory I made there. You still see the occasional person in a town or at a warp crystal but the world seems so empty now, sort of like a metaphor for my life and all the friends i've lost contact with over the years.

Horizon xi feels very similar to the old days.
If you are a super hardcore no lifer, some cracks will show, but honestly back in 2005 my journey felt exactly the same as when I revisited the game last year on horizon.
Got two jobs to 75, redid all the story content, and quit haha. The endgame was never for me. The idea of it was cool, but it’s just too much of grind.

I loved FFXI, but it was very hardcore and punishing for a game. I still play today on a private server.
But it was indeed punishing, couldn't level at all without a group, (unless beastmaster) at the time. I only played up to Treasures of Otter-Gaunt or whatever that expansion was called.
Aggroed mobs that will simply never stop chasing you until you died, being deducted EXP if you died, ya it was punishing.
I had a Tarutaru character, or as they were called "Tawutawu" that always was fun to play. The cuteness was always at overload status.
But FFXI's best feature by far was the subjob system where you could combine classes in a virtually endless set of combinations. My favorite is still Redmage/Dancer combo where he can cast, melee, restore and be so self sufficient he can do pretty much anything :)

I had printed out papers that explain Magic Burst and Skill Limit Breaks so we could use them in party camps.
I had one character who do dragoon (my main job), Red Mage, Dancer, and Summoner (Summoner is amazing in 11).
I miss it sometimes, but left when they made it more solo friendly.

In XIV u pay 12,99 for up to 8 Chars in total PER SERVER (if i remember correctly the server part)
Also MAX Inventory is 80 n the Quests (yes there are several, 10 Slots each time i think) for them r located in Jeuno (another City which is more or less the Main Hub for Mid to End Game)

That's right, nobody remembers this game anymore, except us old guys. If you go on Twitch any given day of the week, you'll see thousands playing FF14, but MAYBE a few dozen total in FF11 streams. Hell, even TH-cam seems to think you're talking about 14, since that's what the gaming tag has it listed as. It's so incredibly sad that a superior game like this has been totally forgotten by almost everyone, but especially young people.
Also yeah if you think retail FF11 is hard, don't get me started on the good ol' days of the PS2 launch in '04 when I started and things were MUCH tougher. If you want that experience, try the Horizon XI private server. It's... uh, an experience. Like bashing your head into a brick wall over and over again until either the wall breaks or you do.

Honestly everything about this game was a masterpiece and I remember vividly. House parties, hitting the dunes and the difficult leveling jumping tremendously making being social a must, quests like sub job and dragoon, weapon and job leveling, everything was so much fun. Do not waste your time with HorizonXI. For anyone reading this, I repeat, you are willingly accepting a Trojan Horse if you get invested in HorizonXI. It's not what it appears to be, though it seems to have a high pop and you will hear people praise it, many are regretting this decision once they get deeper into the truth of what Aerec and Kipling are doing with this server. The ownership and leadership are abysmal, duping runs rampant, and the devs have been caught already selling RMT to the playerbase. Seriously, I know it because I fell for the same bait, and several months in, started seeing tons of unfulfilled promise by the devs, constant walk backs of plans and poorly managed Nerfs of jobs, and this is just the tip of the icebergs. Are there nice and great ppl in the community (playerbase), yes, absolutely. Do those nice people know what they are in store for? Not likely, because they are so on board the hype train for nostalgia they cannot see the forest for the trees that is HorizonXI is none of the things it claims to be, especially not the grandiose claims the leadership makes. But hey, if you're a glutton for punishment and love to be talked down to and berated/abused by the staff of a ps, then by all means, learn the hard way.

It's wild to me that one of the cornerstone aspects of MMORPGs, the sharing of information, is so completely centralized to a few datamining websites for modern MMORPGs that nobody wants to engage with questions about the game when asked while they're playing. Just condescendingly point you to one of those websites.
The easiest way to get a conversation going while playing an MMORPG is to talk about the MMORPG and asking a question about it is by far the simplest way to start such a conversation.
It's unfortunate that trolling and memeing by asking the same questions repeatedly - "Where is mankirk's wife?" - led to questions being scoffed at, especially after being able to get answers quickly, online.
At least this behavior isn't prevalent to the same degree in older and smaller MMORPGs like FFXI, EQ and City of Heroes.
P.S. Keep playing FFXI for a bit more and learn about Skill Chains and Magic Burst. It's one of the single best mechanics in MMORPG history.

You say the mobs will chase you down and kill you if you run away. But the mobs do have 'zones' that if you get far enough away they will wander off back to their zone. I mean, it's not the 10 feet away that FFXIV seems to have. But it's a sensible distance.
This DID NOT used to be the case back many years ago. When you could amuse yourself by aggro-ing a high level mob miles across a zone, and drag it with you all the way to a zone line far away. Leaving the mob to slowly wander back to it's spawn point. Potentially aggro-ing and/or killing anything low enough level in it's path. Top bants at the time.

I had this biggest love/hate relationship with this game. I was fascinated with the Pet jobs in this game and gravitated towards Summoner and Beast Master. I'm actually a little upset with the fact that summoner doesn't function more like it's FFXI iteration in FFXIV. You don't even get the ability to summon the usual Titan, ifirit, garuda, ect. in their actual forms until level 90 for gods sake! I started way late in FFXIV's life but I assume that means you didn't get them until they released End Walker however many years after the game launched. Never mind the possibilities opened up in game play with pets having their own Enmity, TP, MP, Stats, move pools, ect. I feel like there was more creativity involved in dealing with every situation in XI rather than... just starting your rotation. EX: I used to repeatedly send carbuncle to fight Bomb mobs 10x my level, from a large distance to get self-destructed on for massive xp. lol I don't miss competing over end game monsters with 24+ rl hour wait times for a sword or a robe I HAVE to have to be relevant at that job/level, loosing xp and de-leveling when dying, and shouting for help in jeuno cause I can't solo a gods damn thing, and party finder doesn't exist. At least in FFXIV I can experience the story cause it's not a waste of Gil, EXP and time helping other people do it. I hope they get BST right in Downtrail.

I started up FFXI 20 years ago on the North American release. It was quite the experience having played EverQuest prior. The graphics were better, the quests were better, it had a linear storyline with cutscenes (completely unheard of at the time), and QoL features baked in from the start (EverQuest didn't add mounts and server based teleport systems until it's third expansion, about 3 years after its release in 1999). FFXI was amazing and the fact that you could play it on PS2 was even better. I played it on PS2 until Sony shut down all PS2 online support in the 2010's. That was a sad day. I hope you enjoyed your experience and give each storyline a shot. They're all great expansions with fun battles and compelling stories.
