  • This is a tutorial on how to build the unique super capacitors that you see on my channel. It's also my first tutorial-type of video, so others in the future will be much smoother - thanks and I hope you'll enjoy it!
    PARTS:
    - 12 1/2 inches of 1 7/8 in. pvc tubing
    - Aluminum foil - the thicker, the better (do not use cheap super thin stuff)
    - 5 mil laminate sheeting
    - Copper foil tape
    - Basic hardware / screws / wire
You can find this 3D capacitor model AND the bug zapper power generator (plus more) on my Patreon: / madplasmatist
You can also visit my website to donate and learn how a water-cooled spark gap works:

Remember to always be safe and use caution, and never attempt something you don't fully understand first!
    Happy cappin'!!!

    Please,
how do we know the positive and negative side of the capacitor? Also, what is the average rating of the capacitor? How much farads do we expect from each? Finally, is there any fears of over-charging while in use and if so how can we deal with it. This is a very commendable work. I am pleased with people like you who are willing to share your knowledge to improve others. More grace, thanks bro.
Can we use any latex 5mm sheet for the lamination or is there a special one for dielectrics? Thanks.
    Kindly reply.

Thanks for the feedback - this capacitor is bi-polar so either terminal can be used for positive or negative. As for other data, I hope to be acquiring the proper equipment to measure these values soon, in the meantime, perhaps someone would like to re-create and share the approx. ratings here.
To prevent overloads (when over 10,000v +), leave a .5 to 1 cm gap between the adjustable overload electrodes, I haven't found anything that can overcome the dielectric breakdown of these 5mm laminate sheets at those distances yet - I know the cap handles the output of flyback transformers and other high voltage sources very well, and it's also the polymer the laminate sheets are made out of and the process that the plastic is stretched which makes it such an excellent dielectric barrier. (I've tried MANY materials, this one by far has had the best performance)
I hope to make an update video in the future with upgrades and the ratings data, until then, from my research this is probably the best HV cap other than salt water that you can currently find as a DIY on youtube - it's a solid cap that gets the job done =)

Want to make something even more fun? Make a capacitor like this. But larger diameter, add 8 to 12 extra turns of the outer foil as a spiral in the center. Now add two pieces of copper tube for the low and high side electrodes going the full length height of the foil. Position so the capacitor will arc between these near full voltage. The center will generate over 100kv at tens of nS pulse. Works great for building a diy EMP test source with an antenna added. ❤

That is not a super cap. Supercaps have at least 1F, this one should have in the rounds of nanofarrads.

“5 mil” is actually 5 thousandths of an inch, which = 0.127 millimeter, not 5 mm (millimeters).

Yes 127 microns.... I think 120 microns is a standard thickness.

Not a super capacitor. Just a normal AL foil capacitor. Super caps are made with carbons and electrolytes and they have thousands of times the capacity.

Exactly. The supercars are made with graphene. They are fairly easy to make in your kitchen and Robert Murray has a video on that....

You may call these super capacitors but they are merely high voltage capacitors in the picofarads range. Super capacitors are made with graphene...

A mil is a thousandth of an inch. Or .001”.

so, basically, the little black box is supplying the voltage, and the caps are are passing it thru, since it's AC, right?

    • @MadPlasmatist

The trick is as long as you pull gently when it gets to the foil part (you should see me do that too in the video), everything will push through just fine =)

Be better just to get 2 alu foils 2 plastic film wrap and wind those whole rolls into a much longer cap round a plastic pipe

I made one of these... with around 2 meters of foil the maximum i got was 20 nanoFahrad...

    • @MadPlasmatist

Did you build it? Did you test it? These are the most powerful caps you can build that keep their charge.

No it's not. This is the easiest type to make but not the best or only one. But you did a really good job honestly. I've tried making similar and it didn't work. People are just giving you a hard time. I guess people who happen to know a little about capacitors are also highly technical and think your title is not good or not accurate idk...

  • @Pulverrostmannen
    @Pulverrostmannen 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I would not define this as a super capacitor though, it is a high voltage film cap. it would be fun to see how many nanofarads or so they measure. But but your design is pretty neat. I would however recommend you solder wires to the aluminium foil to eliminate the risk of contact issues in the end caps (it's easy to do with regular tin).

This is a great build. How many Farads is this capacitor?
A super capacitor is one with high FARADs, not high voltage. Although this is a high voltage Capacitor, it's not a "super capacitor".

Well I don't know the capacitance of the ones he has made cuz I have not made them this is more of a standard capacitor than it is a supercapacitor so its rating will be somewhere around the same I would guess around 3ish farad

These were my earliest videos and I don't have the necessary equipment yet still, though I am always learning and trying. Any donations would much be appreciated, every cent and a lot of my grocery money goes towards these useful videos and world first experiments. Turning on CC 'closed captions' can also help - hope you enjoy my efforts! 😀

    • @MadPlasmatist
      @MadPlasmatist  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

These are HV super caps - you can add layers or use a larger tube to increase capacitance / energy storage. Because of the tight roll and other great design factors, unless you have access to a factory, these are the best high-quality, high-voltage capacitors you can easily make by yourself and by conventional means.
