Respect to the first guy for standing up with him and trying
For context, this kid has only started BJJ in 2020 it seems.
The IBJJF threw a shitfit when Travis Stevens got his BJJ black belt in 18 months, plus I can guarantee you there would be some belt divas at his BJJ academy who would lose their shit if a kid like this got his purple/brown belt after 1 or 2 years, even if he was an Olympian.
Some people still think you get a BJJ belt partly based on how much money you give a gym over time, not just how skilled you are.
I agree. BUT if you have more than a decade of judo and strong newaza i dont see why you cant grade up faster, it just shouldnt be expected. .
He's not a kid. He's An Olympic Judoka. You don't wanna grip fighting with Judoka. You'll lose
If you're a black belt judoka you're at the very least a blue belt. There's no conspiracy here lol
Yeah, it's weird. Also he's like 38 lmao but yeah. Strong high school wrestler and Olympic judoka as the video and several comments here state. I feel like with that much background the year and a half blue belt wait shouldn't really apply to him and others in his position if he can qualify for a Blue off the bat and probably even test for a Purple within at least 3-6 months, because realistically a life-long judoka and wrestler (he's done both forever), let alone one who competed on an Olympic level, is probably better qualified and more of a general threat than most BJJ grapplers at their own game. Like, peak Travis Stevens, for example, against, say, Gordon Ryan...I'd put my money on the Olympian who's dedicated his life to the grind and really knows how to end matches quick.
@@napalminthemorning8309 I agree on everything but for the last part on Gordon, he's basically an Olympian at BJJ. Travis would destroy him standing, but I am 99% sure Gordon would win anyway.
My new Judo hero. So talented. So young and an Olympian!
Judoka's have a crazy pace and amazing trows! 🙏🥋🇯🇵⛩️
No,elite judoka do.
@@scarred10your average judoka would bounce most BJJ players off the mat for fun in most gyms. Doesn’t take an Olympian to launch people
Wow amazing. I love how beautiful the judo throws looks. Next week I will be starting my first judo class and I am a bit nervous. I practice bjj and I am a one stripe white belt, so pretty new, but judo has something really appealing to me and I always wanted to try it, who knows, maybe later on my focus would shift towards judo.
Congrats. Great throws, love to see good Judo used in BJJ tournaments. I just wish there was no commentary by the woman.
They need to ban spectators from talking. It's distracting and almost cheating for some . At my match my opponents coach would not shut up
@@protectork9831 Actually it's great that your opponents coach don't shut up. You know what they want the person to do so you do the opposite.

yaaaAASHHOOO!! nice!
I loved that woman's commentaries, she seems to know a lot about both judo and bjj

Nick's has a strong newaza background. Good to see him competing in BJJ now🤠
I was waiting for mom to yell ground and pound.
That's his wife lol
I do BJJ and judo. One thing I hate about BJJ with a passion is pulling guard. He wrestled? Pull guard. He did judo? Pull guard. Fellow BJJ guy? Fuck it don’t risk it pull guard. Jesus stand up grappling is half the equation stop neglecting it.
Why? If you are competing and you can do it then you use whatever you can do/ If you don't like it, then compete in judo or wrestling. It's simple.
Then learn to pass the guard and btw just take them down before they pull guard
@@GMunoz-oj5zb Because stand up is dying in BJJ.
If things don't change there will be no stand up at all in the next decade in BJJ. Between 2015 and 2017 in the mundials adult BB divisions, only 17% of the matches had takedowns or takedown attempts.
Even John Danaher has said this trend is worrying. Takedowns are a dying art in bjj, and once they go bjj moves even more in to its own little world, getting further removed from being a functional fighting system or an S tier system for MMA.
@@humann5682 I know man but those are the rules of the sport and as you can see there are many organizations with different rules so they may change eventually
It's a lot more then half if you want it to save your life one day in the real world.
that solid pass guard and fast subission should be at east purple belt above.
I am pretty sure he would be tough against amy color of belt
The woman in the background is most likely one of his biggest supporters and contributors through his judo and BJJ journey. I would only advise one to be respectful towards her.
No I don’t know them.
she's a 5th deg Judo black belt, and I love the way she coaches
Love to see how Judokas submit bjj dudes haha
I love the BJJ vs Judo argument/comparison. Each has its spot and are two specializations that are part of the same whole. Jiu-Jitsu. To say one is better than the other is completely dependent on the setting as well as the practitioner. Also every dog has his day. Winning doesn’t mean one is better than the other.
This is way too high level of a Judoka to compare oneself into.
All these pure BJJ guys just pull guard
@Calub Park Well but since it's not a street fight and it's a competition that is allowed. Period.

I went to one of his judo seminars. Really chill and even got in a round of randori.Let me play around a little, but it just feels like he knows every step you're gonna take before you take it.
Those takedowns are beautiful!
For all realism BJJ is Judo let’s not get it twisted Jigoro Kano Designed Newaza BJJ just refined it but it’s all the same just tweaked I
Am not sure why BJJ gives no points for Throws when a throw takes a lot more technical prowness to
Pull off especially against the stiffness of these BJJ players stiffness in Judo means death.
I absolutely agree I am a brown belt in judo and I can typically throw most of the people in my class on a good day in Randori but across town in the bjj gym i have a hard time getting a clean throw. I’m just working on how to sumi gaeshi a single leg at this point.
@@Luccimatic you can throw judo players but not bjj guys? Why do you think that is?
@@jackjack4412 there are several reasons. Bjj people tend to become what i lovingly refer to as “the brick”. they are super defensive and usually have a lot of basic defense skills worked out pretty quickly in white belt. they pull moves you forgot about or just weren’t taught because of judo’s strict rule set as of late. Judo discourages being super defensive and even penalizes you if you are not trying to throw and just stiff arm your opponent, so we tend to play around with footwork more and try to counter each others throw attempts. Defense of any hard resistance comes in short bursts in judo between throws. Stalling on your feet at all is frowned upon. So I guess Pair that with someone that has wrestling background or a good sense of leg grabs and I’ll typically find myself posturing up too high and leaving my legs open for all those wonderful takedowns judo doesn’t do anymore.
That or they just pull guard…
@@Luccimatic it's true, but my super defensive stalling on the ground for judo is very useful in BJJ!

@@Udai_taxim he did not have to spend too much on his back because he ends on top in the first place. That's what you guys don't understand about wrestling/judo.

Oh hell naw this is not fair. This is scaring me going into my first big tournament. Imagine they match a baby blue belt like me up against a Judoka olympian...im chopped liver.
Judo rules!
If this kid bought more of the gym gi’s, paid extra for membership, attended classes, went to team dinners, and also said Oss after every sentence his Professor said he probably would have gotten purple belt faster.
Jokes aside,
High level Judokas are beasts
Good stand up, very athletic, blue belt level ground game IMO. This is bjj not judo - congrats to him and to his opponents for getting on the mats!!!
Hence why he is a blue belt...
And yet he won. IN YOUR FACE!
Nick has black belt level newaza...as evidenced by the ease of his entries into juji-gatame, passing and pinning almost at will. The defensive skill needs no commentary. BJJ (save for the high level) guys don't understand judo newaza....and they sure as heck don't understand pressure. You just got a tutorial in judo base on the ground. Next up...purple belts. My favorite is "Judo has ground game?" LOL.
@@chrismaks2518 Basically Japanese Judo
Kosen Judo?
Everybody loves learning until BJJ learns from another grappling art, then they slap on a new name to the technique and call it Bjj. Just to make sure you don’t need to learn it from another grappling art.
This is very very true
Yeah for example the “Reverse Kimura” when in actuality it’s just a Russian 2 on 1 from Closed Guard. So many BJJ people were butt hurt when I kept telling them that that was a wrestling move smh
Have you ever considered the possibility of diferent martial arts comming up with similar technics?@@AusarisTV
This is why BJJ will be the only necessary grappling art in 30 years. They do MMA, Judo, Wrestling, and even Sambo and when something works, BJJ people learn it.
the strength of judo consists in the control of the figth both standing to trow down and on the floor ; is hard to contol a judoka , bjj dont care about being whith the back on the floor but remember that judo specializes in inmovilizathion and control and in floor that´s a great stronghold
ah, Judo people! I agree with you, so difficult to catch, but it's still fun to try, at the academy I always enjoy sparring with them, but I have to admit that sometimes I have the feeling of "shit, why am I even trying!", still love the spar and the banter and I always learn something new!
That man technically a Purple Belt or Brownbelt not a Bluebelt Level.
Could be a 4 stripe blue
The first blue belt opponent also was not blue belt anylonger I would argue.
Do you think she’s still yelling “use your fitness”

American professional judoka, Olympic level, fights in blue belts (fourth division, below only beginners), with amateur jitzers whose training experience is 2-3 years. At a small tournament of an unknown federation, and at the same time he fumbles for a long time, and even cannot finish some. Are you seriously?
Some serious jealousy there. Can't you just enjoy the show and stfu ?
He's probably been entered into whatever category his coach has told him to enter.
If he's a BJJ blue belt, then he is in the correct category.
I agree that he is a much higher standard than his opponents, but that's not his fault.
@@endurojimmy3109 No one says anything about this. The problem is with commentators who don’t understand the BJJ division system

@@mattvanderschyff4632 depends on the country, but definitely not 3 years in Poland. You have to pass the white belt exam first after attending around 50 classes. After another 50 classes you can get promoted to yellow, but it doesnt mean you will get that belt. After that you have to compete to get your belts faster but sometimes you have to wait 6 months between each promotion, so in general - you see people getting black belt after practicing judo for around 8-10 years. And to get that you have to compete to get the points or attend randori classes.
I am whitebelt after 1 year of training (because I am shit) but as you can see - sensei is not giving belts like candies to everyone
I would change title to "retired judo Olympian",, you won't see a current Judo Olympian doing BJJ, ever. Only a retired one, that goes for MMA or any other combat sport, they're not allowed under IJF rulings. And to be honest your not going to stand much chance against even a retired Olympic Judoka cos of the speed as they're used to quick transition, all that Judoka has to do is do a little swotting up to BJJ rules and regs and it's game over even against black belts. He's an ex Olympian, and he's not even big leagues in an Olympic sense, I think current olympic Judokas from different countries (as there is a huge difference in application) should let BJJ have a go even using BJJ rules, you would be more than shocked, the Japanese with their perfect grace, you don't see it coming, or the Georgians with their animalistic grappling then there is the Koreans with their unorthadoxed entries or the French with their power. I do both but I have to be honest, there isn't a BJJ in the world that would be a match for a current Olympian, trust me, they're frightening and they're better than anyone in that situation, a bit like being a top boxer in your club and the next fight is Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali in their prime or the gypsy king now, just being honest, they're scary technicians, I started BJJ for a rest but love it, and I'm getting far less injuries, I did judo for over 25yrs and fought a Judoka from UK that had been retired for 30 yrs, I thought I was good but this guy ate me for breakfast, 10k lighter, a lot older, less muscle but didn't matter, he was on another level even though he'd never won a gold, it's the speed and expertise of these guys, it's awe inspiring tbh, every BJJ player would have a better arsenal if they had judo first, do it the other way round and you will find it very difficult to do judo cos of the in built fighting mentality already picked up, it's a lot easier to go from judo to BJJ, (and let's be honest, it's the old traditional judo newaza, no matter what the Gracie's say, they picked up and refined BJJ from an old Judoka visiting who taught them. Anyway I digress, good video.
He’s still on the Olympic team, he is NOT retired at all
@@marcostagaban I know, dude typed this while thing for no reason.
Cool essay. Didn't read it.
He's right though.
IJF rules don't alow an international fighter to fight competitions in an other sport... Don't ask me why but it's the case.
For having experienced this first hand, and from all aforementioned countries (except Korea) I totally agree
I hate when other people try to coach and drown out the actual coach
Is it me or does the guy with the yellow Gi with "Be water my friend" appear really stiff?
The worst part of these matches is that woman's voice screeching comments. My ears are bloody now.

Now that I watched this. It was nice the Jakoda let the kid due his thing.
in bjj you get a blue belt (rare occasion purple) for putting time on mat. this is bjj rule and not Nik's fault that nobody in his division/rank can't even stand on their feet or apply any of the shit they have learned to get their blue belt.
Probably most bjj black belts today couldn:t get near him either on his feet.
Judo blackbelt must compete at blue belt.
You can compete in any division regardless of your belt. You just need your coach to sign off.
Referees in BJJ have no clue what a throw is. No clue.
is that coach carrie in the background?
I think it’s good for the sport of BJJ for these guys to start at blue belt…so what if they trained in another sport. Somebody always has an advantage and if this guy or these guys do well at local tournaments I say bravo. It balances out.
They must compete at blue belt if they are blackbelts in judo.
Drill more guard passing He would be perfect
Delpopolo is much faster than all of his opponents.
How much did the first guy weigh? He seemed a lot heavier.
Shows you how dominant Judo is over BJJ. Delpopolo would throw around BJJ world elite black belts with ease and pound them in his weight class, no comparison with which art is superior.
Any highly ranked 190 pound black belt would shit on him brutally once it went to the ground.. that’s the thing about bjj, you can get thrown and the match is still on lol. like another comment said, blue belt is a low rank and he shouldn’t be competing in the division given his previous grappling experience
@@graysonchavis these guys are so happy about a judo Olympian struggling to beat some blue belts.

@@candicebriddell5259 he would eat all pure BJJ guys in his weight class in grappling. BJJ is pathetic in standup fighting, this is an Olympian at standup grappling fighting. What do you think happens when one of these BJJ people get thrown hard?
This is what gets me about grappling but l can’t see a way around it …it’s that it’s supposed to be a fighting art yet at the start particularly in BJJ contests they literally head bump each other in the bent double posistion …in a real fight this is the punch and kick range and no one in their right mind would happily stay there for more than a split second …at least in Judo they are more erect and when they close they take away the space …yeah l know it’s a sport and l don’t offer any alternatives but it does kinda grate on me ….
Notice how the Olympian Judoka's belt magically changed colors from blue? 😂
it's because both wears black gi. In judo if both judokas wears white gi, so over the regular belt one of them wears blue or red belt. It's common even on international level. Don't look for any mystery in it.
We should do away with mats …that would give more credence to the great judo throws seen here ….

BJJ should be called Brazilian sport ground fighting. Emphasis on the "sport". I was in a melee with 7 people, one guy took another guy to the ground, was on top and promptly got soccer kicked in the face by someone still standing straight unconcious. He lay there while everyone else kept fighting for another few minutes. Be as salty as you want, but if you go to the ground, and there's no mat or referee, you are in trouble.
