They hold fertiliser. Stops animals from getting at it, and helps to prevent it burning the moss

Can I get help ..how long in leaves or length cm ect do I let new leaders grow before prunning ....to create a new leader and also busher ficus...atm my ficus has 4 main leaders at the top of classic s-bend bonsai..with 2 leaders comming of one branch...3 leaders comming of another branch...and 2 leaders comming remaining 3 branch's. .thanks all

Leaders are used to thicken the branches.. if you get the desired size you want on your leaders branch.. thats the time you prune it... but if ur in the finished stage where you only do the trimming to maintain the form of your tree... dont let the branches grow too long.. they will use much energy and create imbalance of nutrients distribution through out the whole tree.. cut them when they reach 1-2 inches...
