I love this Pentatonix performance. Thanks for reacting to it. Fun Fact: Scott just received an Emmy Award for arrangement and direction (along with 3 others) for their work on a segment for the Superbowl preshow. So cool.

They were so young here. I believe Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie we're only 19 at the time they did the show.

Scott is EXTREMELY SOULFUL R and B is his favorite genre. One of his influences is Jasmine Sullivan among MANY others. For some AMAZING Scott RnB check out "Lose Us" by Rozzi ft. Scott Hoying.
Rozzi (Raw-zee) and Scott met at USC college. Scott had a very brief stint as a college freshman because he auditioned for The Sing Off. In that brief stint Scott was part of the FAMOUS SoCal Vocals.
Scott was so vocally good he was given solos immediately.
This caught the attention of USC alum
    arranger/show scout Ben Bram.
He noticed Scott but had also seen him with 2 school mates (Kisrtie and Mitch) in a viral video of The Trio performing " Telephone" by Lady Gaga at their Highschool choir concert.
He thought they were GREAT and told Scott he and his friends should audition for the show.
Scott had also met Rozzi at this time.
He was impressed by her POWERHOUSE Vocals.

Week 4, Video Killed the Radio Star, to me, was the first time everything clicked and I was sold. Week 7, Born to Be Wild, was when I started to really believe they'd win. And Week 10, Dog Days Are Over, sealed the deal. Those of us who have been fans since their first performance on the Sing-Off love reliving it with each new reactor. Please circle back to at least some of the other high points.

I have called them BabyTonix (at this stage until 2017) for years - they have 'seasoned' so well into the group we experience today! If you read their back-story, then you know that Avi and Kevin only joined the 3 Texans a few days before going onto this Sing-Off competition - that in itself is amazing! And that is where PENTATONIX got their name (5 singers) and where their magical journey began - You probably already knew that, but just in case ... 🙂😉

That was such an awesome performance by all of them. Scot had the moves and riffs and runs, Mitch had the perfect wawas, Kirstie was doing the backing vocals with Mitch just perfectly....and Kevin and Avi were doing outstanding support.

All of their performances on _The Sing-Off_ are Babytonix, and a good many afterwards, too. Personally, I count anything prior to "Daft Punk Medley" as Babytonix, but I'm sure others have different definitions.
I love Shawn Stockman's reactions to Pentatonix. He seemed to think that his role as a judge was secondary to his role as a listener - he was there primarily to enjoy himself, and it makes many of his comments to Pentatonix utterly delightful.
I'm a little disappointed that you aren't going through their performances on _The Sing-Off_ in order; it's fascinating to watch the way they grew over the course of the season. Also, you may want to distinguish between episode numbers and performance numbers. This was, indeed, from the ninth episode, but it was Pentatonix's tenth performance. Their ninth performance, "OMG," by Usher, was earlier in the same episode.
Their 11th and 12th performances were both in the tenth episode, just a week later, which goes to show how grueling the schedule was. They had all of one week to put together their performance(s) for each episode, and frequently there were group performances and such that they also had to appear in. I don't know how any of them managed it, especially since with only five members each one of them had to be on the top of their game for every performance. There was no time for anyone to have a bad day or get sick (and in a couple of cases they sang even though someone WAS sick, but you'd never know it from their performance). It's just mind-boggling what they went through, and the quality of the music they were putting out.

This was 2011. The "trio" (Scott, Kirstie and Mitch) were all 19 and they had just recruited Kevin and Avi earlier that year to audition for the show. Babytonics indeed. I recommend a live performance of their cover of "Hit the Road Jack" on the Queen Latifah talk show in 2013 -- th-cam.com/video/OzN2rsugsDc/w-d-xo.html

I agree on this Live version of Hit The Road Jack, The LIVE Hollywire version and their studio version are ABSOLUTELY MIND BLOWING! And please keep in mind that they were still quite young when they did these versions.
Also recommend Quincy Jones presents PENTATONIX .
They do a LIVE version of Save The World. Kevin Avi Scott Kirstie and Mitch do Crazy Alien things!!

There was no way any one but them was winning after that. The guy from one of the other groups grabbing his head knew they were playing for second.
I have always wondered if Scott was supposed to grab the mic and start dancing. He probably had to or he was going to explode.
Scott, Mitch and Kirstin grew up in Arlington, Texas. Their high school (Martin) is predominantly white but there are some of all races and ethnicities. They were also in musical theater so they probably interacted with more people of color in theater.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 ปีที่แล้ว

Many of the biggest stars in music are black, and The Trio were not only choir nerds - I think they were constantly listening to, singing, and thinking about music from a very early age. And children don't typically think about things like skin color except in the way they think about hair color or eye color - just an identifying feature. Prejudice is learned, not inborn.
So when Scott was a kid, buying albums, he would have bought the kind of music he liked, regardless of the race of the performers, and he would have found out very quickly just what he did and did not like. I don't think he had to have experienced R&B live in order to have become a fan of it. This isn't to say that he didn't experience it live, just that it wasn't necessary for him to do so in order to become a fan.

Poor Larry doesn't know the best compliment a singer can get is for someone to do their music in their own style and do it justice. Marvin would have been proud. Especially since his dad, a preacher, called his music the devil's music. His dear old dad killed him while Marvin was protecting his mother who was beaten often by the dad. I think he was just jealous too. Some gratitude after Marvin invited him to live with him in his nice home eh ?
He never really owned what he did either and served a very short sentence.
I remember when the news came on the radio and ppl thought it was an April Fool's joke.
I think his dad died alone. Deserving.
