Thanks Tom. I've had a Thermopop for years and am very happy with it. One comment on your tests, you were sometimes not even keeping the full tip of the probes in the water. In real use I am shooting for the middle of a piece of meat which is pretty much always more than just the tip of the thermometer. I'd love to see a repeat with the probe stuck in the water bath about an inch or so past the tip. This should make both a bit faster since the rest of the probe is acting like a bit of a heat sink. It would be cool to see them both inserted in the water bath together at the same time too to get a good side-by-side comparison.
So, technically it says "within 1°" in 1 second, so it was about 3-3.5 seconds to get to 33°. But still, if you prefer the format of the thermopen (I do) the clear-out price on the MK 4 is a great deal. Having said that, I also have similar a "flip out" style inkbird and thermopro as well, that are equally as accurate, within a few seconds, as my MK4, and the thermopro was on sale for $18 when I bought it, the inkbird was $35. I still go to the MK4 mostly for the better rotating display and backlighting though.
RE the battery: A lot of people are putting the battery wrong, you are supposed to put the battery under the metal hook. If you did do that then it might be a different problem.
I had a Thermapen for a little over couple of years-just outside the warranty period. I noticed yesterday that the plastic housing has spontaneously cracked around the top edge and into the temp reading area. An Internet search revealed that this is a “thing,” and clearly a defect. But Thermoworks will only offer a repair service or a discount on another one. To pay nearly $100 for a thermometer and then have it crack when it has never been abused or dropped (and really not used very much, for that matter) is a dealbreaker for me. I won’t buy another.
I agree. My entire thermometer loadout is one Thermopop and one Dot Probe. And that is all I need. I might upgrade to the one that has multiple probes one day, but for the time being I can get both of those for less than the price of the Thermopen One.
I've had a Thermapen for about six years. It recently started to act wonky even after a new battery. $75 for a one year warranty. Never again. Have had tremendous success with
Looking about the same time, I agree it's misleading, but they are still solid products I'd be mad if I traded my mk 4 for no difference I guess will say my mk 4 has worked like a champ for several years
I have 3 or 4 different thermoworks and they’re all about the same. The $100 or the $30. The difference is so inconsequential. 1 second. 2 seconds. who cares. They’re accurate as hell though.
Thanks for Watching Erik! Agreed they are great products! I have an issue with “False Advertising”. The Thermapen One just doesn’t perform as advertised
I have bought 3 cheap ones off Amazon and they have driven me crazy, 2 of them got a light drizzle of rain on them and both died. They were supposed to be water resistant. Finally, the last one is off by at least 5 degrees and I was so pissed off at thanksgiving, I tossed it in the trash. I just bought the thermopop and will use it smoking a turkey this afternoon. I have no doubt it will work fine. Just take my advice, buy the thermopop and don’t waist your time on Amazon crap!
Just bought the same thermapen one same results just a little bulky but I really like it just not the price. Think I will pick up the thermapop this weekend and use for smaller cooks.
Thermopen one 25% off now. Just bought one. It got close to 32 pretty darn quick. It would be better to include a stopwatch reading than counting it off. The difference in the price is not about the speed but the form factor and other setting. If you don’t need to angle the probe, the instant on or the display - then you are right - go for the cheaper one. Even the American Test Kitchen agrees.
I can't speak for the Inkbird or ThermoPro temperature probe, but the Thermapen models have NSF certification. For home use, that's not a compelling reason to spend the extra bucks, but when it comes to food safety compliance and liability, it means something. Tom's point is the claim of 1 second readings is not true. His demonstrations clearly cast doubt on that claim. That said, the NSF certification, much like a UL listing has value in commercial and industrial applications and can command a premium price. From experience, I can say NSF certification is not awarded easily and comes at a significant expense. For casual home cooking, it's not necessary.
I just bought a thermapin one. I've had a 22.00 thermapop for 6 years. Don't waist 105.00 on this Junk. Forget about returning it, they will only fix or replace and you pay shipping. My pop works as good if not better.
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ I also have one that I bought from walmart, built same as therma one, it was7.99 and it works as fast and reads the same temp as the ONE and POP. It is like buying a Harley, your pay for the name.
I bought the cheap $20 off Amazon works great changed the way I cook why do I have spend $100 on thermometer I think it’s just to show off to ur friends
i bought some cheap Good Cook digital thermometer at the supermarket for maybe 5 dollars, does the same thing in about the same time. battery still working after 3 years. it has a blue backlight and turns on and off when you swivel the pin in/out like the thermopen does,, it doesnt rotate though. maybe they're all the same thing and cost doesnt even seem to matter?
Glad to see someone really taking a good look at this. I won't call out anyone, but videos of other bbqers that were made ahead of or at the time of the release were a little less objective than these videos have been.
So just a few things. To create a proper ice bath you need to fill a cup with crushed ice, then add water and let it sit for about 10 minutes. With that said in another video you said the company told you that "they claim that since I was stirring it in the ice water that the residual heat from the tip heats the water". That is pure horse shit. If anything you stirring the thermometer around accelerates the heat transfer of the water to the probe, so it should read quicker. This is because the water temperature at the probe tip never gets a chance to heat up. It is always replaced with the ice bath temperature. Keep up the good videos and keep calling out bad advertising.
Great video Tom, I have a classic Thermopen, but I’m looking to upgrade to a thermometer with a rotating display and back light. Now I know the Thermopen One is out. Which thermometer do you recommend?
Great review Tom! I think I'll stick to my Thermpro TP19, it's as fast as that, faster it looks like and accurate! But do you have the MK4 too? I would like you to compare those 2 against each other please!
Tom, I have the original Thermapen and also the Thermopop. They both do an excellent job. In my opinion, the Thermapen One is not worth the extra cost.
I've had a Thermapen for about 5 years and it wasn't long before I started wondering if the ThermoPop would be just as good. Glad you made this video.
Thanks for Watching!

If you compete in SCA steaks, you definitely need thermapen.

Good comparison. But the measurement of duration should start with "Zero", not "One, one thousand".
Thanks for watching Jon!
Saying “zero” takes time that needs to be accounted for… Everyone counts the same way as Tom.
Thanks for Watching Casey!
Great comparison. For my money I went with the ThermoPro TP19. $25.50 on Amazon, works great.
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback! I am unfamiliar with the TP19, I’ll check it out
This validates my findings also. I have the thermapen and the thermopop. I prefer the thermopop every time.

If thermo works still has the thermapen mk4 for $69 that’s tough to beat. Otherwise I’d go thermopop
Dr. G! Thanks for watching! The ThmoPop is solid unit. I’ve also had good luck with the InkBird products
