Elvin and his two brothers Hank and Thad were from Pontiac Michigan, I grew up in Detroit in the late 40s through the 50s and didn’t even realize that one of my favorite drummers lived only 45 minutes from my house. I wish I could have met Elvin because I’m also a drummer. I especially liked his playing when he was with Trane. The John Coltrane quartet was very ahead of its time and had a sort of spiritual style of music.
