- The one thing better than harvesting citrus, is TASTING citrus fruit! We grow 13 types of citrus in our orchard. After harvesting 10 types that are ripe, I do a taste test, tasting the citrus fruit I just picked. You can't beat tree ripened fruit! You'll hopefully be inspired to try some of these types of citrus fruit next time you're at the store, or even be inspired to plant one or more of them!

I love citrus, I have a Cara Cara and Moro blood orange that I planted last spring, so still too young to get fruit this year. I also have a Tango mandarin that tastes just like the cuties from the store. I went to a citrus U-pick last year and filled a bag with lots of different varieties of grapefruit and oranges and did my own taste test at home. My favourites were Rio Red grapefruit and AZ sweet orange. I just need to remove some landscape bushes to make room in my garden for them 😋.
A citrus tasting helped me choose the types I really liked, and was such a help to plant with confidence! Happy that you've got some bushes you can "upgrade" from 😀

the "Honey" mandarin is pretty small and it looks like a kumquat. have you tried eating it with the skin like a kumquat?
it might worth to try it if the skin was not bitter.
Oooh, I'll have to try that! It's definitely sweet enough on the inside and thin skinned enough to try that out.

Zone 6b checking in. Currently just have an owari satsuma and an eureka lemon (in pots). They're staying in our insulated (unheated) garage by a west facing window. They're a bit harder to deal with than non-hardy deciduous potted trees but worth it I think. I'm really hoping the lemon takes off this year; it's still a small tree. My favorite sweet citrus are all mandarin/tangerine/satsuma. Never been a huge fan of oranges tbh. Thanks for the video🤘
Nate, for your commitment to grow trees they have no business growing, I salute you! 😂 Seriously though, the most dangerous place for any of MY trees to be is in a pot (read: oops, you wanted water and fertilizer??😭). I admire the comittment and hoping you get a great yield!

Whole paycheck! 😂 True story. Lol Fruit looks delicious. What kind of lime is that? My limes are kind of orangish inside, very seedy but good.
😂 Whole Foods sells a lot of identical stuff you can buy at most stores, but for some reason 60% more?!? The lime is a "Persian/Bearss".

Of the three I grow, I think the Gold Nugget (when truly ripe) is hard to beat! The nice thing about planting 3 in the space of one is that I don't have to choose 😂
I live in the "apple capital of the world", so no citrus growers here. :-) I used to live in Anaheim over 40 years ago, when they still had orange groves in the area where I walked to school. Does citrus ripen off the tree? Thank you! :-)
That's a neat memory of your citrus lined commute! As I recall, Disneyland was built on acres and acres of orange groves in Anaheim. Growing fruit is a heritage that is largely carried on in our backyards (citrus, apples, whatever). As far as citrus ripening goes: NO, citrus does NOT ripen after being picked.
how old are your trees??
Most citrus I have is 6 years in the ground

When we moved in 19 years ago there was a Valencia. I quickly put in a navel, since they ripen at different times we pretty much have oranges year round.
I planted a Valencia 🍊 about 3 years ago. Gotten some fruit but not a lot. Is it a peelable fruit or do they need to be cut?
@@SDMev1982 It doesn't, peel that well in my experience, it can be done but we mostly use it for juicing.
