    YaST really is the big selling point of OpenSUSE for me. When I tried the distro, I loved it, too. Wonder if there is something close to it in the AUR...

    Thanks for the review, it truly is a different distro, it has amazing detection, you can pretty much do a pre-setup from any Distro's iso and it automatically imports the setup, luks2, serpent, btrfs subvolumes, multi HDD detection for Raid & a detached Luks header etc. unfortunately while I admire it, I can't fully take the leap if u will, every conceivable measurement openSUSE beats Arch...exept 1, the AUR, and that's a deal breaker if I don't have access to it, 1 way or another, so many of my programs are AUR and very few are actually Pacman, so reluctantly I gotta stay with what I know blindfolded.

    Great review Ermano, for long time ago i am stick to rpm... i love arch but for some security reasons i like to use rpm or deb. Many official software are in that format and i think is more secure install the official packages XDD. I definitely give a try to tumbleweed again because i love the bledind edge software, especially Gnome. and dont want to suffer the updating versions like in fedora. Best regards.

    Good Day Ermanno. Once again, a superb, skillfully put together presentation about Tumbleweed.
    I do have a very minor issue with Tumbleweed. It always wants to update the system bios so that it is the default boot distribution. I do no mind that, but I wonder why it needs to do that each time I use TWD
    BIG PLUS to SUSE for the grub menu that no other distribution offers. It is beautifully categorized to make reading the boot menu a pleasure to use.
    I will briefly present my system configuration
    a) Fedora 34 on /dev/nvme (30gigs out of 1tb)
    b) /dev/sda (SSD) 120gig reserved for evaluating distros
    c) /dev/sdb, Tumbleweed, Leap15.2 and Ubuntu Deepin, Each distro is given 30gigs
    d) Leap 15.3, with 30gigs in size, I am not yet excited to use it.
    e) Spare 1tb disk
    f) Ubuntu with openzfs 1tb disk
    I have tried clear-Linux(currently gnome40), but it is not yet suitable for the desktop. I am not enamoured with Gnome 40.
    That is why I use the Fedora34 Deepin /Ubuntu Deepin interfaces.
    My needs for a distribution fit within 30gigs of disk space. Ubuntu with Openzfs requires one to assign as a mininum, a full disk. So, it is a curiosity distro for me.
    As for arch, for some reason, my earlier uses (manjaro, endeavourOS) did not keep me interested. For me, the distro that has a good user forum is why I keep that distro around.
    In two weeks, I will be installing makulu linux's latest version. Jaques, le développeur de Makulu. vive en VietNam. Son distro est formidable.

    I gave openSUSE a second shot with tumbleweed recently, and I wanted to stick with it, but it is the only distro where I have had this peculiar problem.. I use a recording audio interface, mostly because my headphone jack on my laptop is broken, but I also use it for my microphone (Shure SM-57). Using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with GNOME, it would be switching automatically between the built-in audio and the USB audio. Looking at the audio device (PreSonus Audiobox iOne), when it did this, the power LED would flash suggesting that the USB port was not putting out enough power.. I have to wonder if it is some configuration because I have used many other distros on the same laptop, even Gentoo where I had to dig around the kernel menuconfig to figure out how to enable the drivers for the device.. I also don't have this problem on Arch with Gnome.. It only ever happened on OpenSUSE GNOME and it honestly was 100% a deal breaker because I absolutely need to be able to use that audio device. I don't want to hold it against OpenSUSE but I would be interested to know if anyone has any insight as to why this would happen? Thanks in advance.

    • @eflinux
      @eflinux  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Jamie! I can't really be sure, but it sounds like openSUSE might use another driver/utility for managing that. Maybe someone in the community know more about this, or you can also ask in the opensuse forums eventually.

    Why are you using LVM below btrfs? I thought btrfs could span multiple disks by itself, or is there done other feature you're after?

    • @eflinux
      @eflinux  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think this from the btrfs wiki explains it better than I can: "A subvolume in btrfs is not the same as an LVM logical volume or a ZFS subvolume. With LVM, a logical volume is a block device in its own right (which could for example contain any other filesystem or container like dm-crypt, MD RAID, etc.) - this is not the case with btrfs. A btrfs subvolume is not a block device (and cannot be treated as one) instead, a btrfs subvolume can be thought of as a POSIX file namespace. This namespace can be accessed via the top-level subvolume of the filesystem, or it can be mounted in its own right."

      @@eflinux it is indeed an excellent utility. If established in other distros, it would enhance the usability of linux. If i remember correctly there are also a gtk and qt version available in suse. Thus, there seem to be all of the elements to make it the "standard control center" for linux.
      It would be easy to think that most of the system inner workings it controls are conserved across distros (systemd? Firewall? Cups?). Thus, possibility of porting across them. However, it seems not much work on that in the community.
