It’s fascinating how humans hear electrical signals creating various frequencies of sounds and so easily anthropomorphize them. Just some info about the mushroom synth music for you guys sadly the mushroom is not actually making those sounds. I'm well versed in using synthesizers and have been for years. The mushrooms don't actually produce any of the sounds. One wire is hooked up to each side of the mushroom, and an electric current is run from one wire to another. The differing electrical resistance from the mushroom is used to control certain parameters on the synth, such as, pitch, envelope, filter, waveshape, and reverb. The mushroom isn't actually making these sounds, the electric signal that's transferred between the wires is dampened due to the fact that mushrooms aren't as conductive. The change in electrical resistance is used to attenuate the current fed into certain functions in the synthesizer. You could do the same thing by having a wire in each of your hands and using the resistance of your body to change parameters on the synth. There's nothing special about the mushrooms when it comes to synthesizers. You could use the electrical resistance of something like a piece of bread, a sponge, a rock, or basically anything else to get the same effect.
@Jade Chandler it didn't. When he cut into the mushroom he was decreasing the amount of matter the electricity had to travel through which strengthened the electric signal.
I think the reason the Stern one gets to me is because Stern seems _genuinely concerned._ Reminder this guy gave zero fucks about anything, from making fun of Selena when she was murdered (even going as far as to play gunshots over her music) to making quips when 9/11 happened. And yet *this* made him uncomfortable.
That also explains how it could be fake. If Howard is acting then he would purposefully try to sound uncomfortable when, in this situation usually, he would not believe the guy and just make jokes the whole time.
The one of the mushroom being cut may actually be the knife interfering with the signals, as mushrooms are the fruiting body of the real being (the mycelium), kinda like how fruits are for plants. Also, a lot of mushrooms can form completely new colonies by being split like that and falling on soil, it's actually quite benefical for them spreading

All plants and fungi emit some kind of frequency that can be converted into sound! As a joke for one Valentines Day, my partner gave me an audio file of the frequency of roses. It was... grating. But I will always stand by the idea that some plants and fungi have greater “intelligence” than anyone gives them credit for even if they don’t have central nervous systems. For one example, the iconic smell of cut grass is a distress pheromone given off by the grass.
very true, and by many definitions it does qualify as a form of intelligence. Plants are master chemists, they are slow and unmoving and devote their energy to responding to subtle chemical and electrical changes around them. They aren't minds or brains, but highly attuned machines of some sort that not only read the environment but respond to it, all through (as far as we know) complex chemistry, they truly are unique there is no human invention to compare them to. However the cut grass distress pheromone thing is a misconception, its a chemical released when the plant is wounded, yes, but the way it is framed would be like saying "Humans release blood as a distress signal when cut." it is, in reality, not quite that remarkable.
ok ok as a mushroom appreciator i love it!!! thats such a noise mushrooms would make. and it scratches my brain just right. could listen to it all day (ah and im not a specialist, but the "screams" might just be resonating from the knife cutting away matter. the same can be said at the end, since theres significantly less fungi)
Honetly, while the sound IS garbled and disturbing to the human ear, I always find these "sounds of unheard nature"-type videos/sounds so.. Wholesome. Heartwarming, kind of even. Just like the sound of underwater deep sea, a storm, a hurricane, it's nature. In a sense, nothing to be scared about, but instead a great opportunity and possibility to hear which has never been heard before and be able to listen to our surroundings.
@spaceboy.digital I'm sure the person *did* know that, and the TJ comment was meant to be a joke because... A word for "mushroom" is "fungus". And the plural of which is "fungi" .-. Sounds like "fun guy"???

The "Clay" story... you can definitely hear the moment when Howard realizes this may be real and not at all a prank... it's chilling. (Nice on the shout-out to Unresolved. It's a great podcast.)
The mushrooms talking to each other sounds like they’ve been meaning to have a lil get together and have just started to give each other the ideas for it. When they got pulled away they were like “oh no! Buddy? Where are you!”
The smell of freshly cut grass that so many people love so much? Yeah...that's actually a distress signal that the injured flora is sending out into the world. I've always wondered if the grass is trying to warn other plants about a danger in their midst.
what are other plants gonna do about it? This meme about the grass distress signal is a bit of a misconception. Yes, they do release this chemical when cut, but it is like saying "humans release blood when cut as a distress signal" while technically correct, blood being released does usually correspond to distress to the body, but the framing of it makes it sound far more remarkable than it is.
I could see Les Claypool sampling the mushroom sounds if he ever got brought on for a new Mushroom Men game, especially if they had some kind of stealth segment or extremely powerful and terrifying boss encounter. The pure anxiety that the lion's mane sounds produces is beyond even the feelings that the Guardian Theme from BotW can invoke in me. It's like the synth equivalent of that dentist drill track from Silent Hill, "My Heaven"
I'm not particularly acquainted with the fauna of Siberia but if I had to guess, the sounds at around 10:25 are pretty similar to what some animals make. I mean, I'm no hunter so if a guy who works with it is scared, then who am I to say anything, but at first glance, it does sound like what a big cat or a wild canine (wolf, fox) would make. Edit: the sound after 11:00 is a murder, for sure 👀
I was thinking most likely an animal had gotten stuck in a trap and was calling for help in a sense has it died. Or possibly a mountain lion has they tend to make human sounds when they scream (correct me if I’m wrong.)
The mushrooms are so cool!! Btw don’t worry, though it definitely sounds like it the Lion’s Mane isn’t actually in pain from what I understand. The part of the mushroom that’s above ground is the “fruit”, and with Lion’s Mane it’s meant to be cut. The actual organism in the soil is perfectly fine :>
If anyone thinks a mushroom being able to feel something like emotions is far fetched, keep in mind it was recently discovered that even animals as simple and small as fruit flies can feel anxious and learn and feel fear. And biologically, fungi and mushrooms are closer to an animal than a plant. (That's not to even get into all of the things plants can do.)
If it makes you feel better the parts of fungus we see is just the fruiting body. There is a long other part that we dont see, often underground. The mycelium roots.
Not to worry, the "screams" and "chirps" of it only exist because in order to get those sounds, electrical signals are sent through it. The changes of sound when he starts cutting into it is caused because there's less mass. It's fine.
I know this is mostly for dramatization, but generally, mushroom fruiting bodies (the bit we can see) are like an apple to the tree itself. If MycoLyco were to cut into the mycellium (the bit that's inside the bag) or otherwise try destroying it, I feel like that would be a better indicator of distress.
The "Clay" one is pretty terrifying because it sounds kinda i said KINDA legit. As shaky as he sounds when he realizes he's talking to Howard to the way he pauses. Its smart tho the way Howard was asking questions about his appearance and stuff that could possibly identify him. Its terrifying to think that by his answers to his questions if they were real, he doesn't seem to be a sexual deviant, he wasn't a necropheliac, he just wanted to unalive for the sake of doing it, which is pretty terrifying in and of itself. But what i do i know im just a true crime watcher. 😂😂
Man, the mushroom conversation was epic. I don’t know about you, but the spongey one said some really controversial stuff, so I’m glad most people can’t understand the Mushroom language.
I always felt that plants are somewhat conscious and aware of basic feelings. I’ve even heard that some scientists have been studying a recent discovery in regards to plants having some sort of vision, they can detect light vs dark and they want to understand how plants do this. I would not be surprised if plants can also “speak” in a way we can’t understand, with neuron signals that intercept at the root systems or through the dirt. I treat plants as if they’re active living creatures
they swing their leaves around in circles until they find the most effective position for photosynthesis. It's very mechanical, the stronger light literally disables the contraction of cells causing the movement. All very slowly of course. They don't "do" photosynthesis or "see" the light either, they fill their leaves with various chemicals and hold them up and let the light simply react with those chemicals. Like a human sunbathing, we don't "make" the tanning happen we just let it. You are onto something with the root systems though, as demonstrated in this video, fungi carry rather potent electrical and chemical signals and have been known to spread across miles and miles beneath the soil of a forest, the trees and plants have been known to "tap into" this fungal network and respond to signals corresponding to climate, disease or even foreign species wherever it might be beneficial to them. There's also a theory that humans can tap into the network over time, or even that a healthy forest "broadcasts" its healthiness by electricity in the air and thats why some forests feel incredibly attractive and safe to be in.
Your presentation got me, it's the first video I listen to on your channel. The thing that is unnerving with strange/scary sounds, it's they get your imagination running, and the scariest things are often produced by ours own brains.
Hey wait a God damn minute I know this voice. T-6 is that you? Why am i just now finding this channel. This just made my day. The effort, production level and quality in this vid is amazing.
Howard keeping his cool and went on to continue interviewing Clay. Too bad the latter wasn't caught, I lean more on the possibility that he was being honest.
That Russian forest video especially when a voice of a woman humming was one of the few instances that I really got creeped out just because of the sounds.
FYI Lions Mane Mushrooms are delicious! Without cooking or prepping at all it tastes exactly like lobster and butter, to the point where if I blindfolded you and asked you what you were eating, even the texture would have you thinking it's steamed lobster and butter. If you ever are at a Farmers Market where they are being sold, TRY IT! You won't regret it!
I love your channel , its about time someone made some videos with content never seen before . Im so sick of all watered down versions you see over and over.
10:20 At first I thought it might be them filthy Xenos from Z Centauri, but now I don't know what the hell that is, maybe the bastards left their little flying Doritos and went to touch some grass? Shame I don't own a gun to hunt them.
I believe mushrooms are intelligent and have a consciousness, just not anything like ours and not something we can really understand. Maybe something like a hive mind that's connected to an even greater consciousness, capable of perceiving the world in completely different ways than us. I've done a good amount of psilocybin mushrooms over the years and I've definitely felt something there, and it's different from strictly chemical hallucinogens, which I've also done a significant and diverse amount of.
The screaming mushrooms made me feel really uneasy. I'm not a vegan or anything, but giving them a voice and seeing them get cut like that just made me feel uncomfortable.
5:40 Unless he cuts it with a laser you cant purely say if its a tonal negative response, The steel of the knife could be adding to it and ruining the result.. A laser (only light) like a sun mimic would probably be a cleaner way to be positive

I've just learnt that mushrooms and humans shared a common ancestor. I'm guessing he was a fun guy to know!
Every creature on earth has a common ancestor with humans if you go back far enough

@spaceboy.digital is this in support or against me I’m genuinely confused
@spaceboy.digital I'm sure the person *did* know that, and the TJ comment was meant to be a joke because... A word for "mushroom" is "fungus". And the plural of which is "fungi" .-. Sounds like "fun guy"???
I can't believe I got emotionally invested in the mushrooms...
I want you to know that your work does so much good by improving so many peoples days/weeks. Thank you.
Agreed!!
Yo, I came here to enjoy myself, and I'm bawling over the screaming mushroom😭😭 still love your work and thanks so much for shining a light on this topic
Are you... Okay?
Yes I'm fine, thanks for checking in😂😂😭 Knew mushrooms 🍄 were smart, but not this...
Seriously tho💯 I remember once upon a time a read a study about this but I have never seen it preformed on camera and it was upsetting, especially when it was a lone little chunk... just saddening. But the study I read was focused on trees
@@brandirhodes6370the comment above yours debunked the mushrooms actually making that sound. I'm kinda bummed about that 🥺wish I wouldn't have read that comment 😭
Really?!💀

@@spimbles let’s go band for band lil bro
Those mushrooms need a record deal asap
17:48 The most punk rock solo I've heard in my life. Dude totally shreds!!
4:50 honestly? the scarier part of this whole thing to me is the fact that he destroyed what i think is a beautiful mushroom
Always a good day when T-6 and Maverick uploads on the same day. well done, many thank.
T6 and Maverick are the best team-up since Incognito Mode and Storymode.
The actual organism in the soil is perfectly fine :>
love that youve been blowing up this year T6, more than deserved after your consistently great work ethic all these years. love what you do man
If anyone thinks a mushroom being able to feel something like emotions is far fetched, keep in mind it was recently discovered that even animals as simple and small as fruit flies can feel anxious and learn and feel fear. And biologically, fungi and mushrooms are closer to an animal than a plant. (That's not to even get into all of the things plants can do.)
hi maverick files :3
Hi :3
hiiiiii :3
:3
ehehehehe such a cute thread, haiii :33

Oh my gosh that second mushroom had so much personality with just those little noises i felt bad when he started chopping it up
If it makes you feel better the parts of fungus we see is just the fruiting body. There is a long other part that we dont see, often underground. The mycelium roots.
Same
Not to worry, the "screams" and "chirps" of it only exist because in order to get those sounds, electrical signals are sent through it.
Yep that one’s pretty chilling he sounds genuine in my opinion. Answered questions like how many so matter of fact without pause. But who knows.
I know that speaking over a phone distorts the voice to an extent but I don't know why that voice sounds so familiar.
Man, the mushroom conversation was epic. I don’t know about you, but the spongey one said some really controversial stuff, so I’m glad most people can’t understand the Mushroom language.
“Here is the sound of nature” [phat beat drop]
The sounds heard in the forest sound like the sound effect used by headvrab victims in Half Life
I almost thought this channel was a fever dream, thanks for keeping going
Never thought I'd feel upset about a mushroom being cut but here we are...
Nature sounds about as trippy as I would expect it to
I love syncing synths up to plants and fungi. They sing the most beautiful songs
Your presentation got me, it's the first video I listen to on your channel.
The thing that is unnerving with strange/scary sounds, it's they get your imagination running, and the scariest things are often produced by ours own brains.
Man, TimeSix never fails to make amazing content! I’m always excited when he posts a new video! ^^
Those mushrooms legit sound like the kind of music you'd hear in Incision.
I really like the intro man to this one, it was simple but off putting. Good job dude.
The mushrooms are gossiping
Hey wait a God damn minute I know this voice. T-6 is that you? Why am i just now finding this channel. This just made my day. The effort, production level and quality in this vid is amazing.

Yesssss, maverick files & t6 uploads on the same day heeeeeeell yeah
Literally me saying "leave him alone" when he was carving the mushrooms
Howard keeping his cool and went on to continue interviewing Clay. Too bad the latter wasn't caught, I lean more on the possibility that he was being honest.
T6 of Maverick Files has become my favorite YT channel of ALL time!
& I just discovered him Like 2 weeks ago.
That thumbnail is just a photo of that time I was eating something soft, and then felt a crunch
Gotta love that intro. Gives such a feelin
That Russian forest video especially when a voice of a woman humming was one of the few instances that I really got creeped out just because of the sounds.
It’s always a good day when maverick posts
This video is everything which is great about Maverick Files to me
Never thought I'd feel sorry for a mushroom
Feel like the mushroom guy might just be like a great ARG for what is basically just a normal synth mix
This is the second video by you i have watched tonight and im in! Subscribed, you have my curiosity!
“Herbal medicine” 😂
Your intro gave me chills, it's awesome!

"Clay" is a clear example of someone w/ clinical psychopathy
I love your channel , its about time someone made some videos with content never seen before . Im so sick of all watered down versions you see over and over.
Thank you for the awesome video as always!
Comparing the communication of mushrooms to the soundtrack of Terraria is really spooky...
The "Rock Music" (pun intended) at the end was so unexpected, loved it
"Tonight were listening to a rock, hell yeah" lol
Mushroom 1: "Hello friend! :D"
Mushroom 2: "Howdy :D"
That mushroom has a future as a rave DJ

I stumbled upon you yt channel and so far I really enjoy your videos, keep it up!!! You earned another subscriber
Oh my God "tonight, we're listening to a rock, he'll yeah" 😂😂😂 that was so unexpected
I always think of Maverick Men when I see your channelname. I love your content.
It's scary to me that I've "heard" or felt reminiscent sounds or patterns during intense mushroom trips.
The mushrooms sounds like the terraria mushroom biome theme😂😂😂😂
Might be one of my new fav channels
5:40 Unless he cuts it with a laser you cant purely say if its a tonal negative response, The steel of the knife could be adding to it and ruining the result.. A laser (only light) like a sun mimic would probably be a cleaner way to be positive
The mushrooms synthesization videos have so many comments that are like “Take that Vegans, plants can feel pain and distress too!” And it’s kinda funny ngl
