Throughout the entire film, we barely learn who even died. Their whole focus is on themselves, particularly Danielle’s appearance, weight, relationship status and career. Nothing that actually matters in life. They recite the mourner’s Kaddish at the end, a profound prayer about creating the kingdom of heaven on earth. Their focus on the superficial keeps them in their own little hell, in what could and should be a loving and supportive cultural community. And it leaves a sensitive young woman trying to find her way feeling suffocated and lost.

I don’t really get it. A film about a family get together where a young woman is socializing with a some rude relatives plus her married boyfriend’s (john’s?) wife shows up. At least she has a family. More than a lot of people can say these days. And who forced her to date married guys?

well…I think the problem was, she didn’t know he was married and had a whole ass family, which didn’t really mattered anyways cuz she was lying as well about who she truly was too. I don’t know the significance of a Shiva but if I did, this movie would hit really hard for me because at the end when all of her lies and malicious ways came back to her and she had no choice but to repent because she admits how lost she truly was, that was very beautiful to me. At the end of the day, nobody is either wrong or right, we’re all just. I guess that’s what I got from the cramped van scene.

She didn’t know he was married and nobody wants to be constantly judged and scrutinized by there family especially when they are trying to find their way in the world
