    The picture of the two horses leaning over do you realize how good of a picture that is catching them in that position they could have fallen over, but they have such good balance. That is a beautiful shot.

    During the five plus years I used the 77mm f1.8 for event photography, I used it mostly on a Pentax k3, it was my favorite lens for isolation photos and head shots. I took countless mother and child photos while photographing weddings.

      Nice! I used this lens on a K-3 a lot and loved it, too.

    Always amazing how small these Pentax FA FF lenses are compared to all the other MFG lenses for FF

      Absolutely yes. I love how focused they were on small lens design.

    I agree with everything said in this video. The 77 Limited has phenomenal rendering, especially for portrait work. When I was seriously into portrait photography, it was my favourite lens: one could always tell which images it produced. However, it was let down by the autofocus performance of my K-1 and K-3 II, which meant that I used my Nikon far more. My Nikon portrait lenses are no slouches, but they don't have that je ne c'est quoi of the 77. The only lenses in my arsenal that came close were the Canon 135 mm f2L and the Leica 90 mm f2 APO Summicron-SL.

    Correction. It was made originaly by Pentax. Hoya bought Pentax later on.
    Pentax FA Limiteds are the reason I keep a Pentax system in paralell to my Nikon D850 and top lenses.

    It would be interestiong to know your opinion about 77's little bro 70 ltd. It covers fullframe fine and also razor sharp. The only issue I've seen was wild CAs when I shot black text on white screen, though I never got any in live photos. That may prove that comparing lenses by testchart photos is useless :)

      Good question. I've never used it, but I would like, eventually, to review all the Limited lenses. And I agree about test charts -- functionally useless outside of a testing environment, and even then probably overated.

    Hi David, I'm considering buying this beautiful lens for my Leica SL2-S.
    Because of the adapter, using as a MF lens is the only way.
    The 43mm f1.9 limited was also one of the options at first. But after compared with 77mm f1.8's focus ring, maybe it dosen't suit for MF.
    I would appreciate it if you could provide some advice for me.

      In short, you'd be happy. I think this video covers the tips and insights I have to this lens as well as possible. I used this lens in manual focus about 90% of the time, so it's very easy to use with adapters.

    Hello,I have a Pentax A SMC f1:2 50mm,but the appertaure ring is very tight and the threaded ring above focusing number,just rotates and focusing is not working,is there any way to fix this

      Good question. I've never used that lens. The Fix Old Cameras channel might be a better resource.

    i shot pentax for years. still have a k1 but never picked up first party lenses. I ended up with a tamrons right after 3rd parties stopped supporting the k mount.

      Tamron makes some good lenses, but they're something about the Pentax OEM lenses that's really incredible.

    Hi David, Hoya came into play 2008. Are you sure they develeoped the 77 mm in 1999?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  ปีที่แล้ว

      Dangit. I thought Hoya bought Pentax before that. Thank you and good catch.

    Would you say this is a poor lens to get for shooting on MF film cameras? I like the focal length/size of this lens and was thinking it might pair well with an LX, but if it's MF isn't good then maybe I should just have to stick with one of the older 85 or 100mm lenses which are great lenses too.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely. I use it a lot on my Pentax LX. I like the feel of dedicated MF lenses. This works beautifully as an MF lens with precise focus and good handling. My complaint about the handling is that there's less damping than with manual focus cameras and I can feel a slight vibration when focusing that stems from the AF motor gears. If this lens were used exclusively on an MF camera, it would perform wonderfully.
