    I have been living in france part time for 16 years and have seen many of these. But the first one - is done so many different ways. Each person does it differently. Sometimes just the cheeks expand and no sound. I have yet to see two people do it the same. Merci beaucoup Virginie!

    Merci! I have seen every one of these gestures in Quebec and I thought it was just a few buddies being overly expressive. I did not know it was so common.

    Wow, this is fabulous! I can't believe that I've lived in France for 10 years, and could only have described the first two of these expressions. I guess I've been able to interpret the others without realizing that they were a special category of "French sounds and gestures."

    Way back, until about 1940, in England you would hear an older person say "that's all my eye and Betty Martin" to mean "that's a bunch of crap/a lie". It was often shortened to "My eye!" You can read those expressions in Agatha Christie. But here in Spain the eye-stretch gesture means "be careful, watch out" particularly if you distrust someone. "I've got my eye on you!!"

    Kids in India use "et tuc" to mean that they don't want to talk to you and the friendship is over :p

    Bonjour! I have heard gesture number referred to as the "French blow." I've always heard it with a soft sound with a release of air.

    • @frenchfan3368
      @frenchfan3368 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The French blow is simply the slight puff of air you make meaning "Je ne sais pas." It is the first example you did during your video.

    • @frenchfan3368
      @frenchfan3368 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think that is the real name for the gesture. It's simply what myself and some friends call it.

    The one with the eye we have that in Arabic except we use both fingers on our eyes to emphasize that you’re “full of it “

    I have been to France numerous times and have driven all over your beautiful country but I have always been puzzled by the hand gestures used by the other drivers toward me. Could you do a video on the French driver's hand signals? It would be very helpful for my next trip to France. Thanks!!!

    In Urdu/Hindi, we say « yaar » (bro/dude/man) in front of literally anything.
    Doesn’t matter what you’re saying, just say « yaar », and basically everyone knows you’re being very informal.

    When I was an au pair in France, the host parents used to do the first one all the time during lunch/dinner spitting all over the food in the process - used to piss me off to no end lol

  • @LauraMorland

    By the way, how do you manage to have such a fantastic American accent?

    • @Alicia-jf8yd
      @Alicia-jf8yd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      she's american, not french, i'm french by myself and when she speaks english she has a little accent so i think that's why her american accent is perfect

    • @LauraMorland
      @LauraMorland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Comment se fait-il que vous êtes sûre qu'elle est américaine ? Regardez à partir de 0:14 "... all of these crazy sounds and gestures that us Frenches make." Il y en a 2 fautes qu'une vraie américaine ne fera pas (si elle voulait parler bien) : "us" et "Frenches". Elle aurait dû dire : "we Frenchies."
      A part cela, elle s'identifie en tant que française. Est-ce vous dites qu'elle mente ?

      Simone Streeter that was funny !
      All though they are not doing any signs, in correlation to my first comment, but fun to watch.

    • @simonestreeter1518
      @simonestreeter1518 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you liked it! They don't really, but Kate McKinnon does do the puffed out mouth and shoulder shrug, and I think Cicely Strong does the 'I'm not impressed' lips like Virginie. :) Most of the other signs Americans would not understand.

    • @1yoan3
      @1yoan3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simone Streeter oh I see now, yeah they do it a bit I guess.

    Numero 6 "et tuc" est le meme que "F@$# you!" dans le lange de les mains? Comment tu dis en Anglais? Number 6 means F you in ASL or American Sign Language.
