That alarm served absolutely no purpose, but it rang every day at 6 AM for a whole semester for no reason. At the beginning it was VERY annoying for me, because it didn't allow me to sleep in peace, but I eventually got used to it and finally I didn't even hear it. And now, 5 years later, it brings me good memories of my Nauruan roomies.
