  • A Genesis and Led Zeppelin connection you can't miss. In a world of album covers, this seems to be quite a theory to consider. Let's deep dive into the possibilities of this taking place in London's 70s rock and roll business. It looks like both bands shared so much more than Headley Grange for inspiration. Thanks for another great vlog Jose. Rich here, I posted about being at the 1977 TEMPE Show. I saw Phil Collins in 1983, he played drums for Robert Plant on his “Principle of Moments” Tour and never sang a note. The show was at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena in Northern California, I kept watching for Phil to sing, but he didn’t even have a microphone at this drum kit. Keep on posting…

Interesting episode! You sure do your homework,Jose. Just like you I am a huge Genesis fan. I love everything between “Trespass” and “Genesis” (1983). Every album is just full of incredible songs and amazing melodies. I bought Duke in 1981 and fell in love with them after that. You and I are also huge Santana fans. Growing up in the 80s, these bands were SO silo'd off culturally, by the fans. Gabriel was the cool side of Top 40, Genesis has-beens, Floyd the relics everyone could agree on, and Zep the gateway to the metal kids smoking section in the back of the high school. But the deeper you dig, the more they all have in common, and their mutual respect is really nice to see in the archive footage.

When ‘The Object’ concept was pitched to Led Zeppelin by Hipgnosis, the *Presence* notion and suggestions for the artwork were - to help explain both artistically and metaphorically - that elusive quality that the band had when they appeared for their live shows - that they possessed a mysterious, metaphysical certain: ‘je ne sais quoi...’ 🔮

I think it's a matter of many things being possibly true at the same time. I'm sure Page/Zep had significant input into the finished artwork as well as I'm sure that Hipgnosis likely had several ideas developed around that time that they were shopping to various bands. Page/Zep surely put their stamp on it but design firms do, in fact, design things to sell so I'm not at all surprised by this.

Hipgnosis had a rejected Pink Floyd album cover of a guy diving into a pool be used by Def Leppard for their second album High N Dry (which was their hard rock masterpiece in the vein of AC/DC). Styx used Hipgnosis once on Pieces of Eight, Dennis DeYoung had this hilarious story about Pieces of Eight's cover he told In the Studio with Redbeard host Redbeard in 1991. "When Hipgnosis (they're English, I think that explains everything (Redbeard laughed)) initially produced the sleeve with the three old women wearing Easter Island earrings on Easter Island, I said I hated it and said "Why do you have these three old broads on our album cover" which was the first thought that came to our mind. Now I'm older, these women look rather good to me. What it symbolizes is the earrings is their status from being successful"

Led Zep fans know that their band is one of the biggest bands in rock history and being a fan gets you street credibility. You don't get street cred being a Genesis fan. You don't go out and get a Genesis tattoo. You are not going to hear Supper's Ready on a rock radio station. A lot of their stuff would kill a nightclub dead if you played it. But the majority of their albums are the bollox and they were either of their time or ahead of it. A highly original band who never shied away from their upbringing and kept it real, man. Credit where it's due. They gave credit to the Zep in this vid.

This was interesting. All the mentioning you do of the Presence cover (especially its origin inside Earl's Court at a boat show, explaining why I always thought the photo felt like some sort of make-believe world) have you ever seen the bootleg album Persistence? It's a one-off take on Presence. One other Zeppelin/Genesis link is --- when Phil Collins drummed on Plant's '83 Principle of Moments tour, he also brought the Genesis lighting rig trusses with him, which were state of the art at the time.
