    Got a new motor John? Sorry, i could not resist.
    I just had one of your other videos recommended (probably because of my recent searches for XKR exhaust) and really enjoyed it.
    I had a 2004 XKR coupe many years ago and loved my 3 years of ownership.
    I have recently bought 2007 XKR convertible (being delivered Monday) i'm really looking forward getting back in a big cat and to doing a similar problem finding road trip.
    Love your new cat, enjoy.

    Hi John - thanks for all the secrets videos. I thought I would share my recent problem on my 1998 130,000mile XKR - the drivers exterior door handle snapped (so the part you lift to open was just flapping around). It's not a fixable part, so ebay provided a second hand replacement, and changing it was easier than anticipated. Just remove the door trim and electrical connections, (but raise the window right up), then two 7mm bolts are reasonably accessible to remove from the inside of the handle, jiggle it outwards and away from the two door rods attached (looks impossible at first, but persevere), then one screw to remove and swap the lock mechanism over to the replacement handle, then put it all back. The gaskets around the handles get brittle and little bits go missing - but at £20 for a tiny piece of rubber I reused the old one. But I sort of wish I had changed it now since it is something you see every day. Anyway - it was much easier than I had expected - my heart sank when it broke......
    My aircon is nonexistent - a regas helped pitifully little and didnt last long. Any ideas?
    Cheers, Steve Pearce, Kent.

    A very useful trip: Thanks so much for keeping these posts coming. A car hit my 2004 XKR convertible offside mirror some time ago very hard and I now suffer from the same vibration in it as you. Likewise the air con needs regular charges, so these may both be standard faults. I will be fascinated to learn how your brake & exhaust improvements work out, also if you find any disadvantages doing them.This XK model is hugely underrated also insufficiently appreciated. I sense that is slowly starting to change. In so many ways this car gives not merely a nod to the E Type, but actually is its true successor!

      I totally agree. These motors are now appreciating. I must investigate that mirror this weekend.🤔. Brake and exhaust mods to come, but I'm waiting to get my small car lift installed first as it will be easier to do and much easier to film.

    I'm sure you've worked this out by now but the mirror has all the symptoms of the black circular plastic holder in the mechanism having cracked. I had exactly the same. Replacement cost £8.99 on ebay (for a used part). Easy fix. I've changed three on the two x100s I've owned. My cars both also had that creak thing until it warmed up. It is worse with the recaro seats as they are bigger and (perhaps) rub more. I drew same 'warm up' conclusions as you. I also had the same door clip go. Again, easy fix. BTW, I once drove Cardiff to Gladgow in a 1998 XK8 and got 34mpg just cruising up the motorway at 70mph. However, I got 28 on the way home :-) (Nb. My 4.2 04 XKR returns 32 max when cruising in a similar fashion).

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Leigh. the vibration was cured by tightening the screw that holds the adjusting motor into place behind the plastic holder, but can easily see how they might crack.
      Jaguar always claimed that the 4.2 is more economical than the 4.0 obviously its hard to tell without some pretty scientific tests as there are so many variables. I recon 32 is pretty impressive for an R

    Hi John. Subsequent to my 4.2-S being awakened from its winter slumber - and also due to ignoring its deteriorating performance for the last 2 years! - the aircon required a regas too. I found an offer on Groupon to get it done for £37 at any ATS Euromaster, which may be of interest to fellow subscribers that have the same problem. Offer expires end July.

      Bit more to the story on my Air con will come soon. Sounds like a good deal though. If you only need to charge your system on the one car and its every couple of years then this is the sort of deal to make use of. If you have multiple old zircon cars and might need to top two or more of them up in the average year then getting your own kit becomes worthwhile.
      I will let you all know a little more about mine soon.👍

      I have also experienced headlight condensation in the past and just left the plastic caps loose on a warm day run for an hour or so and then sealed them again. I only had the problem when I first got my car in UK, but now in a dryer climate I don't have the issue ( or at least rarely) and just do the same trick if I do.

    I had a service on my XKR and the aircon stopped working. After a few minutes of concern I used the Auto button a few times and it sprung into life and hasn't been a problem since. I am just now concerned about the cream leather seats showing early signs of cracks. Any solutions for that ?

  • @jagvette1
    @jagvette1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    if not already mentioned the headlamp juice problem can be cured by drilling a hole in the bottom of the headlight unit .

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can do but the positioning needs to be just right to avoid making it worse particularly in wet environments like the UK,
      The 8 mm high slot beneath the right hand headlight is the cars cold air intake and one jet was spry through that could force water into a lamp with a hole in the bottom. In warmer climates the hole will certainly let the condensation vent itself.

    • @jagvette1
      @jagvette1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes it definitely needs to be drilled where water cannot ingress I am lucky I live in Arizona where we get about 5" of rain a year and they get so excited when there is 1/2' of rain, what silly people, P.S. I hate the rain and I am English

    27mpg (UK) is more like 10.4l/100km... UK and US gallons differ. One's 4.54L the other's 3.78L respectively. So UK's bigger gallon. It's about 22.5mpg US

    • @ToTheGarage

      Yes you have to keep a close eye on the units. Its way too easy to fall into the trap of assuming that US and UK units are the same as we use so many of the same unit names.

      On my previous car I had the equivalent of the adamesh stage 1 and 2 fitted and loved the sound. Check out my video 'best exhaust note in the world'
      Its pretty in your face when pulling hard but not too offensive when on a steady throttle.
      I might go for the DCR version though based on getting a stainless front box rather than retaining the original jaguar unit.

    Joanna Lumley eh, have another Bolli with your Chish & Flips John for a great production. Not sure if I would have let a VW, aka Bentley, pass a Jag.
    Good to see you use the J box, but, do you really need 2nd ? Mileage is about what I got over 1100km from Brisbane to Sydney, just ticking over at the speed limit, except, when no one is watching. In fact put the computer in the correct mode, floor it & see the number hit the floor, great fun, as my MG handbook said many years ago, Safety Fast.
    My Jag man , Terry at The Breed, Cooroy, calls them, "the Boeing of the Bitumen".
    Judging by your dash comments, it would seem I also have the same Sports (1997) model, although I always thought Birds Eye Maple was much lighter in colour, will check mine tomorrow for the underlying colour. Await your words of wisdom on the headlight condensation issue.

      I love the 'Boeing of the Bitumen' monicker. That will stick with me.
      Happy to be wrong on the Wood. Its not my specialism and of course brochure images of the options are not much help as every natural wood dashboard is different. Let me know your thoughts on it. Im thinking Birds eye maple as its the sand for Sports trim allegedly.

      Hi James
      I don't know about Digital but certainly, i know some folk have installed traditional instruments and senders on more highly modded cars, There is a great mod that converts existing dials into true gauges by changing the senders and adding some clever electronics to achieve a genuine gauge in effect. Check out this guy. he has a lot of other interesting Jag related mods too

      Hi James. Mine has an original fit - and now obsolete - SatNav. I've seen some examples of people upgrading to something more modern but I think this detracts from the car's authenticity. However, I have/am seriously considering replacing the SatNav with Purdey-esque analog gauges, which would, of course, compromise the car's authenticity! Decisions, decisions.......

      Start the car from cold with the bonnet up. It should not rattle. Check the kick down operates on the auto box.
      Switch sport mode on and off several times .
      There should be no faults thrown up on the dashboard and sport mode should make a clear difference to the way the car accelerates without Kickdown. (lower gears)
      Ensure 'manual' element of the J gate works and that you can hold the car in lower gears
      Ensure all electrical items work and that the radio code is present.
      Then check the corrosion areas as per this video.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary
      It’s an indicated Mpg so may be inflated by 1 or 2 mpg but pretty good all the same
      Outset has done 51,000 miles and is still A nicasil engine. Good nicasil cars do have lower internal friction
      It has had top tensioner change but otherwise nothing except very regular servicing. I enjoy hypermiling where you try to extract maximum economy by clever driving ( I have a video on that with my Navara pickup truck which I got 43 mpg out of)
      But this was not one of those runs. As you can see I don’t hang about.
      They are much more aerodynamic hood up than down, and if the hood is down not putting the tonneau cover on can rob 2 or 3 mpg due to the flapping of the headliner causing drag

    I watched the entire video, incredible video as usual. 3 thoughts and the first one is HUGE. All of these early V-8's had the tensioner and guide issues and "no" one can get away with this issue without replacing them, has this been done? 2nd, I think from factory it says Highway Millage you will average 22 MPG, how did you get better than that and 3rd, how fast do you guys drive in the UK, DAMN.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mitch Thanks for watching
      Good questions
      1) I have documented proof that the top tensioners have been changed but nothing about the bottoms so will be getting a little investigation done. I probably will have to get a trusted independent jag shop to do that as I just don't get enough time at home for that degree of work. I got them changed on PJ almost as soon as i got her too. I saw the guides in your 308 video a few nights back. Those pictures are a warning to all Jag V8 owners.
      2) U.S. Gallons are smaller than UK Gallons (as are the horses used in Horsepower by the way!)
      so by my calculation, 22 U.S. Mpg is 26.4 UK (imperial) Mpg. so I was only marginally better than the factory estimate.
      3) We all think we are Stirling Moss (nothing to be proud of)
      The national speed limit is 70Mph (dual carriageways and motorways) and much of the traffic will be doing a minimum of 77mph. (Unofficially the police allow a 10% of speed limit +1mph tolerance to eliminate any arguments about speedo or speed camera error.)
      60Mph is the limit in most other nonresidential areas. I live in a very sparsely populated area so even the most twisty of roads is usually a 60mph limit.
      There is no limit on how fast you get up to those limits though!
      We don't think that our speeds are particularly high as many of us will have experienced German Autobahns which are completely unrestricted (and completely scary in my book)

      After seeing Mitch's video I am getting nervous about the lower tensioners/guides on my 2005 XK8 with 133Kmi. Keep in mind that the supercharged engines, lacking VVT, don't have the asymmetric loads placed on the camshafts, so in theory that should make the N/A engines even harder on these primary chain components than the S/C ones.

      I think so. I had both the stage one and 2 on the previous car and enjoyed it immensely. plus its a really easy 15 to to 20 Horse power gain on an 8 just by eliminating the squashed over axle pipes of the O.E. System. I will shop around a little but the price and simplicity of the Adamesh system is hard to ignore
      (plus the weight saving is huge)
