    Every time I buy a new tropical plant, you ALWAYS have a video on it 😂. Just rescued a Hawaiian Ti today from the Lowe’s clearance section. Wish me luck!

    I’m always picking up Cordyline trimmings. I’m a pest control technician and when I see the lawn people with them I ask, or I take what find on the ground 😅😅 FREE PLANTS 🤷‍♀️

    Years and years ago, when these weren't really sold by mainland nurseries, Hawaiian gift shops would sell a portion of the stem in these little bags with a green cardboard label sealing the top that said "Hawaiian Ti Plant" on the front with planting instructions on the back. They also sold Plumeria in the same way. Which is how I had gotten my first Ti and Plumeria when my parents took their long delayed honeymoon and they brought me back plants as gifts. (and guava jelly. so.much.guava jelly.)

      I remember those! I think I saw those at the airport in Jamaica when I was a kid... no there's no way that airport was horrible. Well I saw them at an airport when I was a kid, and ginger roots. Do they grow outdoors for you in your area?

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tropical Plant Party of course they grow outdoors here, fairly common landscape plant but they often look like hell unless they are on the north or east side of a house.

    I live in Sacramento CA, zone 9a. I see plain green Cordyline fruticosa outside in the ground in a few sheltered places, but they never really look happy. Cordyline glauca on the other hand thrives outdoors in bright shade here and it does not mind Sacramento's low summer humility at all. I did not know exactly what is was for a long time. I got mine at a grocery store as a 4 inch houseplant, some 20 years ago. But it grew and grew, so I eventually tried it outdoors for a winter and it really took off. It looks like a miniature Ti plant and I sometimes see it listed as a variety of C. fruticosa, but it has a different flower, so I know it is different species. The leaves are olive green, but the new growth is flushed with purple. It is one of my all time favorite plants. i just wish they could cross breed them with C. fruticosa to get new color varieties, that are hardy in my zone.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be really cool of they could cross them! Maybe next summer when Mike bloom again I can send you an envelope with some pollen! 😂 never know, could work!

    • @nuimaleko7
      @nuimaleko7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TropicalPlantParty I just came across the reason that C fruticosa is not crossed with other species of Cordyline, nearly all the plants are sterile. Only plants in their native range produce viable seed. Believe it or not, the huge range of shapes and colors are spontaneous sports that have to be reproduced vegitatively .

    I just love this plant!! I have a few that I wintered over and bought a few more - not the one that you have though. I potted one of them and added an assortment of the coleus plants. I wasn't sure if I would like or not but wow a month has gone by and they all blended in really well! I just have to keep the coleus in check otherwise it will dominate the Cordyline. I've never seen the one you described but will keep my eyes open!! It's sad that its not a perennial in Zone 8 though :( Awesome video Jeff! Thank you!!

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    First time I see that Singapore twist. I am sometimes confused between dracaena and cordyline or ti plant. I bought cuttings with slim plain green leaves seemed to look like a dracaena for me though I am inclined to say it is a ti because i bought together with candy cane. Still, it is a challenge! Thanks for giving a lot of info on cordylines.

    I got a pink and green cordyline interplanted with pink and white petunias for half price from what I’ve nicknamed “death row” at the Home Center. I don’t know why it was put there because petunias and all are doing great in part shade by our front door. Since my cat regards house plants as salad I’ll need to find somewhere else for it before frost.
    I really like the cordyline australis as a landscape plant it has survived one of our winters in Upstate SC. The Upstate/the Outback-wherever it is it tolerates harsh conditions.

    I almost killed mine, I thought they didn’t like water .... Plus there were some nasty bugs in the soil, it looked like millipedes, so I freaked out and got rid of the soil, washed the roots and repotted the thing. Now I’m told millipedes could be beneficial 🌱 ... Still learning

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard both good and about millipedes. I think your instinct was exactly right to clean the roots and repot the plant. Their thirst is somewhat dependent on climate and location. Inside the house they don't need as much water but wont want to be bone dry either. ... really they just like water like any average houseplant indoors.

    I see Ti plants everywhere here though I personally don't own them. Yanno, I know every USDA zone map says my area is 9b, but I see so many large and healthy zone 10 and 11 plants around that I'm having my doubts. I'm not even sure it's a micro-climate thing either because the zone 10+ plants are all over town. This one lady has a Travelers Palm in her yard and honestly I'm jealous. I swear one of these days I'm just going to bite the bullet and try my luck with one.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The USDA zones are fairly rough but are becoming more accurate. Up until 2012 St. Louis was listed as zone 5! That was always so upsetting to me because nurseries wouldn't order plants for zone 6 or 7 that could grow just fine here. Finally they bumped us up to zone 6a/6b! One of the best indicators of what you can grow is what you see growing in your area that is old and mature. I'd say go for it if you're seeing them around!

    I have some Hawaiian ti rooted logs. I live in Seattle and I have them as indoor plants. And I am trying to figure out how to plant them properly. They are cuttings from the stem and I have roots coming out. The lady I got them from said to plant them sideways in a pot and just keep the soil moist... It’s been about two weeks and I haven’t seen any young leaves pop out yet. Do I just need to be patient or do I need to repot them?

    • @comradesam4251
      @comradesam4251 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      patience. if you knew which side is up and which is down you can plant them vertically, however laying on the side should result in multiple sprouts from the stem. these guys take time, just be sure not to overwater and to keep an eye out for rot. a humidity preserving covering can help (provided ventilation), but these guys are pretty strong, just be patient and have faith in it. It will grow. :)
