I am the very lucky player of a B and a D. Downsizing issues are so hard for piano players. I’m there. If I have to let the B go, I’ll get a Yamaha upright. The D is NEVER leaving!

Agree on the quality of Steinway rebuilds. Quality varies widely. If a soundboard was replaced with a completely new soundboard then the character of the piano can be completely different than one with an older original (shimmed) soundboard, which may not have as much crown as it used to have.

I’ve played on a new Steinway S model. The touch and feel of the keys was very nice. The sound was amazing. The price…well I had to move on.

The 1098 desperately needed tuning. Also, the mic(s) were, I assume, behind the soundboard- but in almost every home it would be placed in front of a hard wall, which would give a much different (and better) tonality. Love your vids, though.

Model S sound amazing! But my daughter she love to have Pops collection style in Pink.

I miss Patrick on the newer videos.
The 1098 needed tuning. Yikes!! 🤯 Tone-wise, not as dull as some 1098s I've played. The S had a nice clear tone, and better tuning, though not perfect.

Great video. But just something that can't be compare to, to a good extent, as each piano has its own merit. Plus the recording setups are completely different. I wonder if anyone have ever attempted to make a piano at 45 degrees? I did a little calculation, all else being equal, the vertical gravity impact of the hammer would be about 70% at 45 degrees vs at 90 degrees.

Look into a piano with the Del Fanrich action or now Oliver Esmond-White who is continuing his legacy. Of course, it doesn't compensate for the length of the string... But who plays a 9' in their living room. And I hear that the Steinway upright is not perfectly tune yet.

Yes, and the baby grand has some double striking hammers which can be fixed, but yeah not 100% perfect with those double striking hammers🎹🎶

The 1098 sounds way better to me.
