As one of the oldest and most respected captains of the Gotei 13, fans of Bleach were excited to see what Jushiro Ukitake was going to bring to the final arc - The Thousand-Year Blood War. What we got however was not only unexpected, but left some fans a little underwhelmed. Let's take a look at the sickly captain's role!

His sacrifice was admirable and possibly atonement for the bloody buinsnes with Ginjo and his friends. Yet again that was probably more Tokinada's doing but who knows.

I've said this a couple of times before but I'll leave it here also.
I think Ukitake could've and should've interfered in the Lile Barro fight and saved Kyouraku. He would activate his Bankai but even that wouldn't be enough to defeat Lile. So he would then sacrifice himself by releasing Reio's hand. With this Kubo could've erased the deus ex machina with Nanao's sword, still save Kyouraku and Nanao, showcase Ukitake's Bankai, have an emotional moment between best friends and of course have a much more earned victory over Lile.
If Kubo could change anything in the anime and add new things I wish it was this.

Ukitake I think was a way for kubo to wright himself into the manga, since kubo himself is identical to ukitake since he also has been fighting multiple illnesses most of his life. That said I think he didn't give much attention to the character for that exact reason cos he hates the state he is in... also from what I heard the final arc was rushed, cos from what I was hearing from sources is kubo was in and out of the hospital alot and wanted to be involved in every step of the manga. but was being rushed by his declining health and the publisher.

He should had fight Stark instead of shinsui. His power would had play a great dynamic with him. Also, it would had give him a great opponent. After that he could kill him like he do in the war because for that time it would be shinsui time to shine. Same with Unohana, i think it was a horrible idea to kill her when kenpachi really dont do that much during the war with his power up besides killing gremmy, which i think it would had been a better way if him and unohana team to kill him or gerad. Two kenpachi fighting together it would had been epic. It doesnt make sense killing your best healer in a war. i always say great characters, worldbuilding and designs but bad story and planning .

I don't necessarily dislike the whole "Mimihagi being absorbed by Yhwach and Ukitake dying" thing. I feel like it just lacked magnitude due to the pacing being so damn fast. If this plot point was extended in length I feel like it would felt more impactful.

    • @Darthniihil
      @Darthniihil 3 ปีที่แล้ว +60

I have a strong feeling that the anime will do this justice. There will be an epic score going on while Mimihagi pulses out of Ukitake. We'll see Ichigo and Co fending off Yhwach, there'll be cheers/relief from the soul society. Maybe we'll see some of the Arrancar celebrating the victory in Hueco Mundo. Then cut to Yhwach overpowering everyone. Score changes. Mimihagi gets torn apart. Collage of surprised pikachus in the different worlds.

Regarding Kyōraku & Ukitake's last conversation, I never saw it as flippant. To me, it felt like two friends & warriors that had known each other this side of forever knowing everything the other was thinking. I think Kyōraku was worried about Ukitake, but wasn't going to say anything to slight his friend's strength & will. He masked his concern with this "another day at the office and we'll unwind with sake tonight when it's over" attitude. To me, that's why Ukitake had that smile when it happened, because he knew exactly what was in his friend's head.

They should've had Ukitake and Shunsui team up and go Bankai against one of the top tier Quincies. Captain Yamamoto implied if they worked together they would basically be unbeatable. Such a wasted opportunity. In my opinion if Hashwalt had a holy form they could've fought him together and they could both go Bankai in the fight. And leave Ywach to Ichigo and the main characters, and even Aizen if he wasn't supposed to actually be the final villain of the series. They should have killed him off at the point they did if at all in the arc although I understand what they were going for with his character but he should've done more and had a proper fight

The biggest issue is that you get a sense that Kubo lost interest in him pretty much immediately after creating him. It was like, after he made both of his children (Kyoraku and Ukitake) he immediately fell in love with one and threw away the other. As you've alluded to in other videos, all of the other older Captains have done impressive stuff throughout the show. Unohana correctly deduces Aizen's reveal, Kyoraku completely no sells Chad's punch, Yamamoto is ready to take on two "high-level" captains at once.
In fact, if we really want to have the conversation, without exception, EVERY OTHER Captain gets a showing even as early as the Soul Society arc. That continues further into the Arrancar. Kubo pretty much lost interest in Ukitake immediately after making him, and just threw him somewhere until it was time to die.
    Sad.

Ukitake's sacrifice was not in vain. Yhwach becoming the new SK was counterproductive for his goal. Before the Kamikake the world was ending right there, in that very moment, Yhwach won. But after he became the SK the world wasn't being destroyed anymore, he had to gather more power to do it himself which bought everyone time to form another plan.

    • @oppositedaylogicallydoesnt8226

It wasn't counterproductive to his plan tho:
Yhwach didn't just want to destroy the 3 plains he wanted to create a new one altogether and yh the worlds were being destroyed but if they were destroyed then *that* would be counterproductive to his plans because he would get the chance to create a new world. Yhwach needs the soul king's power to create the new world which was born through the destruction of all 3 worlds. So uh his death was still pretty much in vain as either way yhwach basically did himself unfair with him wanting to recreate instead of completely destroy

They were on a race to stop the end of the world. It'd be really bad I'd the captain commander was to break down.
They knew there was no time to grieve until they made sure they won.
Worst part is how ukitake was pushed to the side. However same can be said for 95% of characters.

We can only theorize what his bankai would be. However, I sincerely believe his bankai would've had multiple "releases" like Shunsui's and Yama's. I was disappointed like everyone else. I mean he could've at least had a battle releasing his bankai and while winning, he would need to cut the fight short and release Mimi to save S.S. That would've been perfect

"Just when you realize just how permanent the ramifications of what is about to happen will be."
How you said that was kind of always my thoughts on what was happening with Ukitake in this arc. I always saw Ukitake's absences, his lack of dialogue, his sad expressions and especially his panel in the shrine as his bracing himself and trying to accept that there is no avoiding his fate at this point. Almost like he was always so wrapped up in preparing for the end of his life, that he didn't have much to say at all. This is at least how I chose to view things, and it gravitated me to Ukitake even more. It isn't going to be easy for anyone to accept their own mortality, even if they are hundreds of years old.

  • @Ephideltrance
    @Ephideltrance 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Ukitake really was another wasted character in the final arc. You are absolutely right, his sacrifice was for nothing and only made things worse. It would make more sense if he actually became a temporary soul king that could freely move around and stuff. Then Juha would need to come find him and kill him to truly ascend to the SK status.
Also, Ukitake was truly the right matchup for the X axis quincy that Kyoraku fought..since his weakness was basically his own light powers. So instead of having that ridiculous god slaying sword plot point...it would have been better for Ukitake to step in and take care of that quincy, revealing his bankai to us.
I think if they doing the anime it is a chance for Kubo not to add but actually alter somethings....and Ukitake's storyline is the one most deserving of a complete overhaul. The end result remains the same and he does die, thus no conflict with the novels.

Curious if Kubo feels the same way that a lot of readers do when it comes to Ukitake. I have my doubts considering how he was treated even in the first invasion. Hopefully we can at least get one major fight with him in the anime that shows off his bankai, but then the question becomes who does he fight? Because if he really did fight Askin in the first invasion, that was a character that Kubo chose to show off to us way later. If Ukitake went bankai against him, there's no way Askin would be able to hold back. So I'm really curious to see if maybe the anime will make a change there.

I always felt that the bond and friendship as well as screentime between Ukitake and Shunsui was akin to that of Yin&Yang respectively.
Ukitake was the one who always appeared to be somewhat lost in thought, burdened and vulnerable, forced to take supportive roles for others and preform tasks many others wouldn't attempt in the slightest but did so with a heart full of faith in others.
Meanwhile Shunsui always appeared to be this happy-go-lucky man with no burdens, no problems and took everything in stride, but there was a darkness in him deep down that only came to the surface once he had no choice, breaking the façade and bravado he likes to put on.
They balanced each other out and needed each other with Shunsui pretending to be the light, but had true darkness on the inside that even put him at odds with the other captains at times while Ukitake's darkness was a burden he was forced to carry, but he did so with a smile and a heart full of pride and without fear. I do wish Ukitake survived and that we could have gotten more from him but he played his part and I'm content with that.

Could have been cool if the Right Arm in its last moments somehow healed Ukitake to an extent. Even if it was a "you have 3 days, but in that time you'll be like you were not sick." Then have him play a big role in the last sets of fights where we get to see him go off at 100%.
Or have it be that he sacrifices himself in Shunsui's bankai to save Shunsui from dying. Like his presence allows Shunsui to take on the role of the Narrator instead of one of the lovers. Then this is why Shunsui's Bankai is never something to be used, because it either costs his life or someone elses.
Either way he'd still die and we'd get Captain Rukia, but his death would've been cooler or had more meaning.

He just willingly ignored Ukitake and resorted to martyring him to give him some worth. This felt the same for Unohana. She was treated better, but in reality not by much. It was just conveniently compelling enough. Ukitakes mini arc is no different just it's not compelling and there's little character to him. Hear me out but, either due to ukitakes characterization or design, Kubo like described wasn't comfortable with him. I think Kubo put him into a box, wasn't comfortable seeing him change or didn't have the vision for what he had already made. That ontop of, I don't think he ever knew why Ukitake was sick or had ideas how to work that into the story.
How would he ever be healed, what implication does a soul being sick have on the story? I think he just dropped the ball. No direction, no ideas, Deus ex machina, plot device, martyring. It's text book stuff.

I just wanna say with Ukitake, If you consider when he was "releasing the seal" to get the shihoen relics to stop the senkimon, he mentioned it took longer and more effort than he'd thought it would.. If that was difficult then imagine a procedure to make your self a vessel for a god. I think he wasn't around because he was always in his bad health, and he had to put everything he had into becoming the soul kings savior, and Shunsui is showing him respect for his resolve by not mourning him, and just isn't a very out with his feelings and emotions kinda person. He never was. All through bleach, Shunsui was like that. Also, a big part of their dynamic as the 2 oldest pupils of Yama, is that since Shunsui took up the responsibility of Head capitain, which if you remember at one point after the Eizen situation they talk about how no one could fill Yama's shoes. Although they aren't the most popular outcomes, they make the most sense for the character dynamics and the other related things going on. Ukitake made his sacrifices, as it makes more sense with his lack of good health and link to the soul king, since his poor health would hinder him being head capitain. And Shunsui who had always shunned responsibility and avoided hard situation made his sacrifices in taking on the role of head captain.

  • @TbxB95

I find funny that Ukitake mostly fight seriously in anime filler arcs and movies, but in the main story almost nothing (Yama-ji -> off-screen; Starrk -> out 2 minutes later; an unknown quincy, probabily the Wind guy, in first invasion -> off-screen again).
Well, I think everybody was disappointed about this in the end. I mean, in the Soul Society saga he did his part, and from then on he was always on par with Kyoraku. Then, how Wondeirweiss get rid of them (and that hit took him out from the battle) was kinda disappointing, cause see both of them against the Primera would have been really cool. The fullbringer arc introduced a point, the betryal of Ginjo from the hands of the most pacific man in the Gotei 13, but it ended nowhere. While in the TYBW you would have expected him to have an evolution or major part like Shunsui, after Yama-ji downfall. See him supporting Kyoraku, have the two of them handle an important enemy, or at least give a Ukitake a single serious fight against a Quincy (there were enough, it wasn't asking so much). Altough he performed his final role perfectly, for those 5 minutes of glory, no, nothing. Probabily the most huge disappointment about all the Gotei 13 captains in the series (not that others captains were handled so well in the end, but what I mean is that Ukitake seemed to be, and it was, a very important character from the beginning, even among the whole captains, so is pretty sad how he ended).
Let's hope in the hell chapter for his redemption (and to see his bankai).

Your analysis are always spot on. As a longtime Bleach fan there is something that has always confused me about the TYBW. Specifically, I'm confused about the nature and origin of the Quincy. I know they're all descendant from Yuha Baha (or however he's called), but for instance--the flashback with Bazz B and Jugo. How many years ago was that? Where did that occur? It was obviously before the original war with the Soul Reapers because the commanders that showed up in Yamamoto's bankai are in that flashback. But then, how old are the Sternritter? Aren't Quincy humans? Where was this nation located? Earth? Certainly not Soul Society?
I'm sure you've thought about this before, and I recognize that the manga simply does not go into any real detail about these questions. But in a desert of information about bleach, your channel seems to be somewhat of an oasis, some I'm hoping you can spare a few drops when it comes to some possible answers to this question.

The sternritter have been around since before the quincy genocide and Ywach has been around since way before then as their progenitor, he's literally the Son of the soul king, before he was a war lord and emperor he had been around for centuries handing out power, taking it back, and slowly creating the quincy race. After the first war they hid within an alternate dimension inside the shadows of the soul society for a thousand years preparing.

When u know someone for so long esp fighting side by side. Ur feeling are not needed to be said in words. They know each other in and out and are still close. Koraku doesn't need to say anything ukitake knows how he feels and viseversa

It will be answered in the hell arc that ukitake aided the downfall of ywach bach, by unleashing the arm of stillness. It may of stopped some of the effects of the almighty, along with Aizen's mind trickery and the book of the end being used on Ichigo. He may now comeback as either an aide from hell or the next arcs enemy.

I’m sorry to say but I think Kubo really let things slip with the story of the blood war. After the death of the Old man what I would have done was to course all the captains and characters to draw-in together and create a real sense of warm solidarity which would have really helped to redeem the shambled situation. But it does show the human side of these people with the arguing and frustration, but then drawn together with the strong bonds established over many many centuries that would reveal strength that goes beyond outward power. Often when the shepherd is struck, the sheep get scattered. I just find kubos indifference with certain Really important characters to be really jarring. I love ukitake

I have a theory (not sure if anyone shares this) but I think Ukitake represents Tito Kube inside the world of Bleach. He’s the 13th captain. He has assistants who constantly fret about him, he is sick but he is always trying to continue being a captain, and he’s been there from the beginning. That’s why he doesn’t fight anyone really. All the characters are Tito Kobe’s creations. He cares about all of them.

I hope the (supposedly) upcoming anime at least expands on that panel from the first invasion. Has to be Askin, the hair matches...I can imagine Askin trying to make him sick only for Ukitake to say that he's used to being sick XD

this also can perhaps be seen in the new hell arc.

I know I'm a bit late but in my opinion if the hand was the thing that stopped ywach in the final battle and actually made him killable instead of a random arrow that'd be a good pay off for having his death seem meaningless

I find it intresting that the Anime team can make the most out of Ukitake even with just one Shikai ability & gave him plenty of well-animated fight scenes even if it's mostly just his Reigai counterpart during the Reigai arc.
But yeah, Ukitake deserves to do more in Bleach especially during the final arc just as much as his best friend Kyoraku did.
