Thanks Dave, for all your videos! It's of course a two way street. Whether doing POTA or not, please listen to make sure the frequency is not in use before taking it over. Many times while activating a park, I've been covered up by another station on a frequency I had been using for a while... It happened to me at a park just yesterday in fact and after trying for a while to work through it, the other station resorted to qrm'ing me with their tuner until I had to QSY. Please everyone, play nice out there!

Daves statement about permission from a ranger to operate in the park remindes me of a Field Day incident where I was out in a remote mountain range on BLM land and a BLM ranger drove up to me and ask what I was doing. He was polite, not demanding. I told him it was kind of an amateur radio event/contest. He asked if I had a land use permit. I guess because my antenna was an 18 ft tall trapped vertical on a heafty tripod. I told him I didn't know I needed one. He said I did. I thought to my self that I was sure I didn't, so I asked, even if it's temporary do I need one. He asked how long I was going to be there. I said, 24 hrs. He ask if I was going to leave anything there. I said it's expensive stuff, so no. He asked me about how many people were going to be in this event. I said hundreds or even over a thousand. In a nervous voice he asked, there's going to be that many people up here? I should have said yes, but I explained to him what Field Day was. We had a nice conversation aboutvit and he was okay with it and let me alone.

Park number is not a required part of the exchange Dave. You can operate Field Day in a park, use the FD exchange, and those qso’s count for POTA. FYI I always check several times to see if the frequency is clear. Some parks do have rules about not putting things into the ground or in trees. Thanks for promoting POTA, great program!

Imagine following a “rule” that said not to put something in the ground such as a tent stake. 🤡 🌎

I am trying to interest my daughter (avidly outdoorsy) in POTA. I know she'll have fun doing it, but of course she needs to get licensed. Her husband and two sons are already licensed.

Thanks for the video Dave. I'm a frequent POTA activator, and your advice is spot on. I frequently encounter the reverse scenario where during an ongoing activation, someone pops up calling CQ. I usually attribute this to propagation changes, but sometimes it's the newcomer just not listening first.
Strangely this pops up more on CW for some reason.

It may very well happen if you operate QRP and ask if a frequency is in use, you won't be heard at first because the station someone is listening to, is stronger than your's, and you will get a "frequency is in use" when chasers start calling you back. Always good to check the clusters as well on the freqeuency you're going to use.

I heard a LID demanding a POTA station get off the 12 meter band because the band isn't supposed to be used for contesting. I didn't think of POTA as a contest but an activity. The LID didn't sign a call, of course, and kept jamming.
Is there some POTA etiquette that says the WARC bands aren't to be used?

    “Hunters” not chasers

"Chaser" is from Summits on the Air, but I think they can be used interchangeably. People know what you're talking about in any case.

Im not doing POTA again. Im a young guy I talk to a park ranger got the ok. 1 hour later over 15 cops came up on my location they were trying to tell me I was breaching homeland security accused of intercepting military operations and I had to answer all kinds of questions before I was told to pack up and never come back. Then I was cited for breach of peace $1000.

Fight it! Your rights have been violated for sure! Sounds like you met an over eager cop. But there's always more to things.

Im new to hf and keep hearing folks doig Pota. Do i have to use certain logs to make it count for the activators. Im just using paper for my logs as i confuse myself using my laptop. In fact my qrz log has 1 unconfermed contact in japan. I have difficulties writing talking and remembering calsigns. Im dyslexic so am a bit retarded when comes to writing, tying, and reading. I read everything 3 times to get the meaning of what is writen. And as you can see my spelling is atrocious.

You did well. The activators does the log and submits it.

@cheifreal great question. I was wondering the same thing. Now I know. So I'll answer more of those calls.

@@douglasvamateurradioandmore so then it doesn't have to be confirmed like qrz log. Then I will start answering as I hear pota when i do hear it. Thanks.
