100 Year Old Irish Doctor on Long Life, Belgooly, Co. Cork, Ireland 1989

- Jeremiah Lane is approaching his one hundredth birthday and still a practising doctor.
Doctor Jeremiah Lane was born in 1893. Based in the Cork village of Belgooly he claims to be the oldest general practitioner in Europe.
Jeremiah Lane qualified as a doctor in 1919 and is the sole survivor of his class. He believes that people were healthier in the past because they walked everywhere and did not eat much sugar. Urbanisation and modern farming techniques, according to Doctor Lane, have added to today’s health problems.
It is much healthier to be living in the country than to be living in a town or city.
He blames the farmers for destroying the natural water supplies provided by springs.
He says there are a number of reasons for his longevity and good health. Practising in a small village meant that Jeremiah Lane could do his rounds by bicycle which kept him healthy.
Nowadays, it is his fat free diet that keeps him going. He gave up smoking fifty years ago. He began smoking cigarettes as a medical student when his classmates in the anatomy room were constantly smoking around the corpses.
He was taught step dancing by the Lord Mayor of Cork Tomas McCurtain, which gave him good posture and helped him to avoid varicose veins.
In the fight against the Black and Tans, Doctor Lane was medical officer with Tom Barry’s Flying Column where the biggest complaint was scabies and not gunshot wounds and he became known as the itch doctor.
When one fellow brought the itch, they all got the itch in time.
In 1966, he retired as dispensary doctor in the village when it was discovered by health officials that he was three years over the age limit.
Doctor Lane still practises today with a small number of private patients and keeps up to date with medical advances by reading medical journals. He plans to finally hang up his stethoscope in around five years.

My great grandmother, grew up in a 2 room stone 'shack' in the bogs of donegal with 15 siblings. She lived till 107
Did all her siblings live to old age or did some die in childhood or as young adults?

My Great aunt lived to be 106 and her sister 102. Never saw a doctor. They were very poor. Ate alot of wild greens.
This great man died three years after filming this, 1992, a great man who served his community longer than most people live, a true Irish character.
Interviews with people like him are absolutely priceless.
Avoid sugar, fat and pollution and stay active. He might not have had access to the advanced medical science we do now but his instincts were spot on.

@@jamief123 Natural fats like those found in eggs and certain meats are good to have in a balanced diet but saturated fats like those from fast food or other fried foods in particular are unhealthy, though the focus has shifted recent years to reducing sugar in the diet especially.

@@edmundpower1250 the oldest man ever died at 116, this clip was in 1989 (32 years ago) when he was 96. It’s impossible that he’s still alive. The last man born in the 1800s died before 2015.

What a lovely man I R.E.M. my child hood doctor he was a wonderful man, and I always wondered what happened to him, I’m 53 now, and I have a wonderful doctor no messing around and gets straight to the point and problem, this generation needs to be respected for all the help and service they have provided in getting humanity back on there feet!
What a fine gent , his mind kept active by working into his hundreds . Like most people in his generation , not many carried excess weight and walked everywhere. Makes me wonder how they managed without drive thru restaurants .

@@sammysoppy3361 Im old enough to remember the 70's and 80's in which this is set. People generally looked alot older than today. Due to hard lives and poor lifestyles, it wouldn't have been uncommon for somebody only in their 50's to look like and old man /woman. Perhaps I exaggerated a little but certainly to more than that.

Also interesting that he smoked until he was 50. I think however those who live past about 85 do so mainly because of good genes more than anything else. Otherwise everyone who lived a healthy lifestyle would live to 100, but most don't.
@@Londonfogey Right. It's been found that lifestyle plays a more important role than genes up until around 90, but that beyond that genes play an increasingly more important role. The average person with the average genes can reach 90 if they take excellent care of themselves, but it's almost impossible to reach the end of your 90s unless you have the genes for it.
He would be shocked at how lazy the doctors are today and how wealthy they are.

I'm Irish and I remember many great old doctors from the early 1950s. Lady doctors were rare though, which was a big loss. However I think it's fair to say that no country can beat Scotland for the practice of Medicine.

Farming and simplicity diet may be the key
My Irish and Scottish ancestors and immediate family lives started shortening recently at 93-95 instead of 98-103 due to my sedentary lives in their elder ages.
