I love these two together, and I extremely like Catherine and how she always select interesting words I had never heard about! Wich wasn't in my English lesson! Thank you so much Catherine and Neil, thank you BBC.
I am very shy to talk in English in front of other people because I always think that what if I talk wrong everyone will make fun of me could you please help me :(
In American English, the 't' is often very quiet/silent. However, in many parts of the UK, we put a greater emphasis on the 't' sound. In listen - silent 't' In lightening - we pronounce the 't' In fasten - silent 't' 🙂
Thanks for your response! I actually have a question about the words until and expiry that some English speakers can’t give me the answer. Can you tell me the email address I can ask the question?
Hello there! Thanks a lot for this great lesson! I’d like to ask a question though. In a situation where you quickly move to do something would it be OK to use whizz? Can I say “I wizzed towards my desk to pick up the phone”? Thank you!
Technically, you could whizz towards your desk but we wouldn't say it in English. But we could say "we whizz around town" or "a car whizzed past me as I crossed the road." It involves greater speed than just moving to your desk!
Thanks guys! I really enjoy your nice videos! I would love to listen to mor of these programs on the radio on Internet. Do you have any Internet radio station where I can listen to programs to improve my listening skills? I have seen several channels in the BBC webpage but I haven’t found something yet! Hugs!
@andyjeancolombia We don't have internet radio but our programmes are available on our website and you can download many of them www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/
I think there is a grammar mistake in the given examples of the second word "combat". It should be "The government wants ..." instead of "The government want ..."
Hi! Thank you so much for your comment! We find them very helpful! In this particular case, there is no mistake. This is because 'government' belongs to a special group of collective nouns which can be either singular or plural. Your example is correct too! The government want... The government wants... For more information on this, have a look here: www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/course/towards-advanced/unit-21/session-1
熊晓风 Hello 👋 Thanks for your comment! I scrolled to comment section to see if anyone asked this particular question and voila! There was one😁 Collective nouns are confusing to me
Sure! 🙂 First of all, levy means a tax and latte is a type of coffee. Some politicians are saying that we should put a small levy (a tax or fee) on coffee cups. This money would go to helping recycling in the UK. Does that help clear things up?
Invader coffee has some of the best coffee I’ve ever had! I love how the original invader blend is air roasted, preventing the beans from being too acidic or burnt, but my favorite coffee that they offer is the mexican chocolate. It is the smoothest best flavored coffee blend that I have ever had!! Another good blend that I’ve tried is the Whiskey blend which is my third favorite. No bitterness yet deep flavor, it is to die for!! Finally I love how the company is run by a vertern and how the website is super user friendly and delivery is fast and on time. I highly, highly, highly suggest you get yourself some invader coffee.
8:38 "borrowed from Germany" !!! In spite of the many French words, the entire English language is borrowed from Germany as it's one of Germanic language. Cheers, Ahmad,
Old English developed from a set of North Sea Germanic dialects originally spoken along the coasts of Frisia, Lower Saxony, Jutland, and Southern Sweden by Germanic tribes known as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. English has its roots in the Germanic languages, from which German and Dutch also developed, as well as having many influences from romance languages such as French. Cheers

Hello Everyone. I suggest Catherine not to drink so much coffee because, she spoke very quickly on this video. Or, maybe I am she who should drink more coffee to catch her speech.
Yes, it is commonly used, especially in newspapers or the news in general. It's not an example of common everyday language, but it would relatively common in print journalism.

Hi Tamem! A whizz kid is someone who is very intelligent or who has achieved success at a very young age. Two examples: a boy who plays cricket for his country at the age of 17; a girl who enters university at 17. If you want to know the meaning of a word, remember that dictionaries can be very helpful. There are a number of free online dictionaries, and they often contain examples of the word in a sentence, as well as explaining the meaning. I hope this helps.
I've just started listening/ watching BBC through TH-cam this month and learned to love it. So educational... it helps me a lot in my preparation taking English language test. Thank you BBC. And with regard to the above topic, i was kinda surprised (it is because im not into current event) that politicians were really in a bid to mans habitual-rubbish-event in order to protect and make our environment preserve for the new generations.
Whizz-kids -- young people who are very clever & successful In a bid to -- in an attempt to achieve something Combat --try to stop something bad happening

I learnt that the word ‘often’ is a silent t word. Why did Katherine pronounce it with t sound? Other examples are listen, lightning fasten.
In American English, the 't' is often very quiet/silent. However, in many parts of the UK, we put a greater emphasis on the 't' sound.
In listen - silent 't'

Yeap, modern English has more French words than German, yet it's technically a Germanic language. That's what I meant.

BBC Learning English does the word whizz kid mean someone who doesn't worry about the future? Is it a proverb?
Hi Tamem! A whizz kid is someone who is very intelligent or who has achieved success at a very young age.
