"Sing For You" came out in 2015 and it is literally, as the title says, EXO singing to EXO-L. Some say the MV and song are about how the members feel and how they are dealing with the 3 Chinese members -- Kris, Luhan and Tao -- leaving the group. The remaining 9 members really felt like they let fans down during this time and that they broke their promise to always be one. (As you may know, EXO's slogan is "We Are One," which represents how even as sub-units they were one group and they are one with the fans, etc. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) So this song was a promise and apology song. This was so far from simple times for the members of EXO. This was probably one of the hardest times for EXO and EXO-Ls. That's why you see Chanyeol and Suho get in a fight, because as the leader, Suho really blamed himself for not being able to keep the group together and Chanyeol is pretty much yelling at Suho to stop blaming himself and that there is no point because Kris, Luhan and Tao made their own choices and there is nothing he could have done about it even if he wanted to, etc. They are all angry and sad because they felt like they were all so blindsided by everything that happened. A lot happened during this time, and there was so much uncertainty about what it meant for the group, etc. In the beginning you see them happy because this was after they have worked through their anger and are now learning to move on. The parts where you see them sad and angry are flashbacks to recent moments where they were still working through their feelings of anger and sadness. In the end of the MV you start to see them being happy and playing around as friends again because they were learning to get past it all and move on and they made the choice to let it go and to keep singing for us, EXO-Ls. :) The whale seems kind of weird until you discover the meaning behind it all, and then it shows how clever and meaningful they were with the concept. The whale is supposed to represent Alice a.k.a. "The Loneliest Whale in the World", who is an unidentified whale species, she is the only whale that has been found to emit a call at a really high frequency, which means that when she speaks there might not be any other whales that can hear her or answer her back. (The whale could possible now also be connected to aespa's storyline because Karina's spirit animal is a whale, so SM could also use it to connect the two storylines.) Sehun is the one who is in the spacesuit and he is supposed to represent the lonely feeling you get floating all alone in space. The astronaut comes from the story/poem about an astronaut who spent time alone in his spaceship as he came back to Earth and how he said that time was the longest and most lonely of mankind. The combination of these two concepts, along with the lyrics of the song, talk about being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut are in space) and being isolated from everything and everyone. Isolation is one of the themes within the MV. The song and the MV seems to talk about how everyone, in their lifetime, will reach a low point where they feel most isolated and like they don't belong or don't fit in, etc. But as the song says, EXO promises that this song and the members will be there to warm listeners', and especially EXO-Ls, hearts. Most of the time when you saw the member in the video they were the voice you could hear singing in the song. If you want to know what the lyrics are about you should look up a lyric video.

Sing For You is THAT video/song for me. This one and Universe are tied for my favorite EXO title track/MV. Well, Love Me Right is my favorite title track, but these MV's are just GORGEOUS. Their winter albums are just something else. This MV is a bit poignant because it came out after everything that went down with the member's leaving, hence the scenes where they were having fun all together and slowly people started fading away. Kai alone, just raging out (they were angry about being abandoned), and then the scene with Chanyeol and Suho was basically because Suho felt guilty about the member's leaving and like he didn't do enough to stop it or whatever, and Chanyeol was representing the rest of the group saying, wake UP! The scene with Sehun and the whale in space, is also very impactful. I have heard a few things about it. First off, that whale was the one that was the only one of its kind (until recently, I think) that could communicate at 52 hz or something like that, so it was known as the loneliest whale in the world, because it literally couldn't "talk" to anything else. And there was another story about an astronaut that went into space and said it was loneliest xxx time of his life. I think there might be a story where the astronaut and the whale meet in space and were lonely together in space...but they decided to go back to Earth because they missed it, even if they were lonely. I dunno. I think that the theme of the video was longing, and loneliness, as you said. You don't really need the lyrics to sense that. I'm sure there are better analysis videos or articles out there...I know there are for Universe (cause that video is another one that is just so deep...). Great video ladies!! I love the variety.
