I love how it's just work and shop talk. this is the name of the game, all of the little stuff everybody cuts out to make the video shorter and then show the dramatic results.
nobody wants to stick around for the journey, they just wanna see the pretty finished product, which is baloney.
the fun is in the process, the problem-solving, the actual work.
so good.
Always the teacher and father first...fabricator second...letting him figure things out but teaching him to think beyond his nose. Always love watching those moments. FJ is coming along
Wow, a real Red Green moment there. "If you can't be good at anything be good at guessing." Brilliant!
I like the way you're teaching while letting the kid learn for himself. Knowing when to step in or hang back is an art lost on many. Great stuff as always and love thw build! Take care and be well.
well said
Not anyone can teach. It is a special skill to inspire a mind to open up and let in what is being said. Plus being a father that lives by example for his kids to follow by. I am in awe of his fabrication abilities and then he shows his dad skills
i know i definitely need to work on the stepin in part more
😁 I like you too-not dead otherwise I'd be watching Michelle by herself trying to name "eyepathameter, car picker upper..." without ALL the "let's get after it"
Yup good call for sure. “I like ya, I don’t want ya dead” priceless!!! 😀 But he got the point!
Happy to see you caring about your health more. Safety glasses, and the often overlooked respirator. Good stuff. In the fab shop I worked in, winters were brutal. Breathing laser and weld fumes all day long is no good.
@JP I knew a guy who by the end of the 1980 smoked 2 pack of cigarettes a day, while also working with asbestos, in the mid 1990 he then blamed his hung-disease on the asbestos brake-pads he removed in the shop but refused to accept that his nicotine-habit contributed to it as well. I heard from distant friends he died as a chain-smoker... but the asbestos killed him he was convinced.
@@isallah1kafir196 My Dad was an alcoholic for 25 years, but the cigarettes were what killed him. His Father lived to be 101, and his mother lived to 88. Dad died at 65. I would listen to him get up in the morning and cough for 30 minutes. When he could draw a breath without coughing, what would he do? Light up a cigarette. I was 15 years old at the time, and even I thought that was dumb. I have never smoked!!! I also quit alcohol in 1977. A person does not "need" either one of those things.
@@Rat-Builder On my 18 birthday I bought the wrong kind of alcoholic beverage, and out if ignorance and stupidity I drank the whole bottle all within 10 to 15 minutes. I was living at that time at one boarding-home for young adults, while I was learning my profession. Well in the night I had to go to the toilet, but I could not stand, so I sat down. After I was done I stood up, but I was suddenly out of control that I crashed down on the toilet-seat, breaking the porcelain-WC. Somehow I could get into my bed.... When I woke up in the morning I thought that I had a lousy dream, then walked down to eat breakfast, head hurting worst hangover in my life, then I was told by a person in charge that somebody broke the toilet.
I was a teenager wet not more than 65 Kilogramm, to this day I can not understand how this was possible.
This was the last and first time that I ever got so drunk that I would not know what I'm doing. There were other stories why I never picked up this habit, as to smoking I too kicked the habit after only about 2 packs. I just didn't have the money for them...
Take care.
Good call on not letting Landon crawl under without something to hold it. There's been many guys crushed under a car that fell on them.
Always put Jack stands under for safety.
Looks like the FJ build is getting closer to being done, can't wait to see it back on the road.
Honestly one thing I'm waiting for is to see the reaction from the cool guy you bought it from. I do remember hearing him say he wanted to see it when it's done😊😄🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Well Randall is starting to fit right in 👍
I had to laugh when Michelle said, you didn't even die😉😂😂
Everything is done on the FJ except the work😉
Keep them coming 👍👍
One of my favorite parts of your videos are you being a dad. You're a good one and your kids are lucky to have you. Happy holidays to you and yours.
"I like ya, I don't want you dead!" Is the most Paul thing i've heard all month! lol
35 or 40 years ago radio broadcaster Paul Harvey used to tell stories on his program. One that has always stuck with me was a man used his forklift to raise his car so he could work on it. The car rolled back off the forks and injured him badly and he cried for help. His son came running and used the forklift again to raise the car off his father. The car rolled back again and fell back on the father again. Two little blocks of wood or some bricks could have prevented that tragedy. You're teaching your son well. Sorry for the sad story but it's probably kept me alive for the last 40 years.
Paul, This machinist just has to say something, when your tapping, you really should use a block of steel with the clearance hole thru for the tap, have the block next to what your tapping, just to keep it aligned and straight while tapping, the fluid is a must. Tap Matic fluid is superb for tapping, if you back track the video, the tap is being wollered around as your talking and tapping, it will break like that every time,.....try the block idea.....Love all the videos, The Hoovers in Beaumont Cally
Yeah he was not straight when he broke it..
Morning folks, hope you're all well. Good call on bracing the truck to crawl under it. When I was 15 I had a car fall on me because I didn't put stands under it. I was always in a rush and only had two bolts to deal with.... Anyways, through the grace of God I'm still here but just barely. Wrenching is fun for me still, but I do put stands underneath stuff now, that's for sure. Merry Christmas all.
When I worked for a farm dealership, we had a mechanic who did not use stands when working combine headers. On day he was under one, needed parts, crawled out and started to walk away, when a hydraulic hose failed, crashing the header to the floor where he was just working. He always used safeties after that.
I've never had any of my vehicles fall while working on them - and my 4Runner is FREQUENTLY on jack stands all 4 corners. I am absolutely paranoid about it and have built some backup stands out of 4x4s. Just in case anything gets squirreley there is always a backup so I don't get crushed. Well I was helping a buddy change his front calipers on his Jetta TDI wagon. I let him jack it up using his OEM jack. He was pretty confident he could do it and it looked like he was fine. I threw some of my 4x4 blocks under the a arms and cross members. Fast forward 2 minutes and the car was sitting on the blocks. He had put the jack on the rocker panel instead of the pinch weld right behind. Those blocks saved his front bumper and his front end from laying on the ground. Never trust anyone to jack up a vehicle you are working on.... And always have a backup.
And if you think that jack stands are unnecessary, just talk to one of those dimwits who steal catalytic converters and have a car fall on them. Oh wait! You can't talk to a dead person...
I knew an older guy who started his own detailing shop in the 80s. Was only at it for a few months trying to earn a living and feed his family when a car fell off a floor jack and onto his face. Didn't kill him, but changed the direction of his life in a less than optimal way.
I was a technician at a dealership. I had a customers truck on the lift and it was an old single center hydraulic lift. It should have been removed decades before. I was replacing front end parts and was coming back from the parts counter when I seen over the top of another car on a lift slowly starting to lean. By the time I got to it it was completely off to the passenger side and on the floor. The front right arm collapsed and it then caused the back arm same side to collapse. That was my last day there as the service manager put it on me even though security cameras showed what happened. Because I was low man I got the old equipment. I would never take a job again unless they had updated equipment.
I lived in Europe for five years. While there I bought a metric tape measure. To this day I use it often for fab work. Whole numbers, few fractions. Super easy to use when the math has to kicks in.
Good banter between you and Randell. He adds a straight man's role to the shop. OK, you're not a comedy routine, but lots of fun. Lots of good comments below. Thanks.
I know what you've done. I'm only here to see Ed's truck and now you got me rooting for the crawler. I'm not mad
Love the content Paul and crew!!!Michelle is as big a part of this channel,as Ed is a part of Matt’s channel!!!
Love fab rats and Matt’s off road recovery!!!the key to both of you succeeding is sticking together like you are!!!you guys are going to take over TH-cam!!!
(Paul is definitely the better fab content,Js!!!)
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE THE CHANNEL, JUST NOTICED YOU'RE AT 314K SUBS, SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF FOLKS ENJOY YALL AS MUCH AS I DO, KEEP IT GOIN
That Fj is going to be totally epic once built seeing it progress more and more randal helping out is obviously paying off. Top effort teaching Lan not to get under a unsecured lifted vehicle and for still giving him sarcasm and sass afterwards those lessons stick with us forever now this Aussies hitting the hay stay safe be well and see you on the next one
very happy to see you enforce the safety factor when using a forklift, I grew up working with my Dad in a wrecking yard, I had a car 6' off the ground tied to the forklift fork with a chain, I was working under it, I had just walked away when the chain broke and dropped the car. Yes I changed my shorts. Stick with the safety stuff. It's important.
Glad to see you taking some precautions. As a leader in our community showing safety in your shop shows others it is good to take precautions. 👍
Now if only Matt would do the same.
"I got room for one more if you wanna go to Aspen" Epic, was thinking the same when I saw that scooter, anyone that didn't watch all the way to the very end really missed out! Love the FJ build too
I have that bike and love it!! I welded a hitch for a bicycle trailer on it 3 years ago and the kids never get tired of cruising around in it !!!
good old SWAG method of cutting works great .. also using cardboard you cut it too short well just add another hunk back on with good old tape .. saves on the metal cost .. cardboard is cheap .. pizza box's , parts box's so on .. some of the most common taps I like too have a few spares ,, hate having too drive into town to get 1 item , another great video ,,
I had a flash back to my dad with your comments to your son. He would never let me work on my own cars, unless I promised
to put something under the frame to catch the weight of the car, should something fail. Thank you. Merry Christmas.
Paul, I use a 90 degree Ryobi 3/8" drill to do all of my tapping. It has a rheostat type of trigger, so that it is "resistant" to breaking taps. On my T Bucket I tapped a whole lot of holes to 10/32 for fuel lines, air lines, brake lines, etc. I never broke a tap. I also use Tap Magic on all of my drilling and threading. I had to pause the video to write this down so I don't forget to do it.
One time when I was about 22 years old I wanted to check the driveline carrier bearing on my 1960 Oldsmobile. I drove it up on blocks and blocked it so that it could not roll ahead. I did NOTHING so that it would not roll back. The only thing holding the car up on the blocks was that I had the car in PARK. I then crawled under the car and popped the driveline out of it. I felt the car start to roll back and had the presents of mind to lay on my back. The frame went across my stomach. If it had went across my chest it would have killed me. My kids were playing in the front yard. I could just barely breathe, so I had to wait for one of them to get close enough for them to hear me. I told my Son to go next door to my Mother's house and get his mother. I could see my wife's feet walking over, and when she got close enough to hear me I said , "Get this *%*($$ car off of me." She yelled at my mother to come over because the car was on me All that they had to jack up the car was the bumper jack. They would jack it up, and block it, jack it and block it etc until it was high enough for me to get out. I was impressed with their jacking and blocking.
At the time, I was a heavy equipment mechanic. I am 74 years old now, and TOO THIS DAY, I am a little nervous when I crawl under something. This is the kind of scare that will stay with you forever.
By the way, cutting things with a thin wheel at times makes me cough too. One thing that I do that you should, I wear a clear face shield along with my safety glasses. I will admit though, when I was your age I just used glasses, and sometimes not even that. One thing that I do always use is a face shield + glasses when I use a wire wheel. I was using one at work one time and when I got home, and took off my shirt, I found a wire from the wire wheel stuck in my stomach. I felt nothing, but it was in my stomach a half an inch, and it was hard to pull out. Since then I never fail to wear a face shield when I buff something.
You always hear about safety this and safety that, but when it actually happens to YOU, it will get your attention. Show your son this little story. It may make him think. Like I said, I think about it every time I crawl under something, even after all of these yers.
Nice to see you teaching your son the safe way to work. What a great dad.
Work fascinates me, I can sit and watch it for hours! 👍👍👍👍👍😎
My favorite build on youtube right now... Bonus points for D&D refference.
WOW!!!! That's what I' m talking about. Rudy you're the Man. I know you're dad was really worried about this one. I think he just aged 20 years on this recovery. As always you guys are the best.
Oops looks like a MORR comment.
Um, wrong video friend!
Tap Magic can’t fix a wobbling tap. An easy trick is to make yourself a tapping block. Take a short piece of about .75” square bar stock. Measure a bunch of tap OD’s and drill a series of holes in the bar that match the OD of your taps. When you tap a hole, slip the block over the tap before tapping the hole. Push down on the block to keep it in contact with the part you are trying to tap. BTW, still use Tap Magic. 😁. Take it from a guy who snapped off MANY taps before a machinist told me about the tapping block trick. BTW, congratulations on your new full time gig. I REALLY enjoy watching your channel and have learned a lot.
Adding to this, be sure and back out a little every time you feel it getting a little harder to turn for clearing chips, especially with aluminum.
@@offroad6309 yes, exactly. I agree. Been there done that. It saves breaking taps.
Also, even thought it’s tempting, don’t use a ratchet wrench to wind in a tap. It WAY too easy to misalign over the drilled hole and snap a tap. Find yourself a ratcheting tap wrench. You’ll be AMAZED how well they work. And, the are much faster than a “regular” T handle tap wrench. Keep up the good work!
And fab the block using a drill press to keep everything plumb and square.
Hey Paul, Michelle and other Fab Rats
Paul, your life is one amazing adventure after another !
You seem to have a great outlook on life.
To bad more people dont enjoy life as you and michelle, or should I call her Motorcycle Momma.
Ya'all are so much fun to follow.
Thank you
Work Safe, Be Well
Can’t wait to see it out on the trail. That’s all I can think of every time I see those big nobby tires.
Just the start of the Fab Rats elec scooter gang! Toyota is coming along nicely. Thumbs up as always! 👍
That fire story reminds me of 1 of my favorite camping stories. My Dad is the most conservative quiet man you're ever going to meet. It rained so much my boots got soaked. We were all sitting by the fire and my boots were a little close. He very quietly said my boots were on fire. I didn't hear him so asked what he said. Same tone and volume..."you're boots are on fire." He never even elevated his voice lol
We used to break those self drilling bolts because they're soft metal. We found the same drilling bolt in Stainless steel, they're much stronger, and we use one to drill the hole, then use a new one for your application since the first one was stressed from the drilling.
Your progress looks Great!!!
I’m like you, didn’t realize I needed lower gearing in the T-case until I did the Rubicon Trail! I planned on doing dual cases until I installed 4.7 gears in an 80’s Toyota case( I had the chain case in my ‘94 Toyota). Now I am plenty happy with the crawl ratio in low 1st gear! It will idle anywhere now! I have 5:29s in the axles but it just wasn’t enough!
Love the "Stories with Paul" segments! My own "Stories with Gary" segments are full of things I may or may not have done and that I maybe shouldn't disclose until after my mom is long gone! 🤣😂
2:00 Ed's "Nugget" in the background, loaded to about half of an LJ 20s "full gross." Doing its share, for a Fab Rats Christmas Celebration. (And then, seconds later, 2 Rats, under a kind of Technical Chrismas Tree. {Put together "Snuffy Pringle Style," from a shifter cable fountain.})
When you were telling your Son to be safe and do not just climb under a vehicle without extra safety and support it reminded me. This is how my Daughter died. Her vehicle was on jack stands and jacks and it still fell on her. I miss her so much. Be safe.
Just started watching this past week. Love your family and all the techniques you do in rebuilding. It is enjoyable to watch all of you.
Another nugget o' learnin tucked away for my SJ build. I'm big on the CAD ... cardboard aided design. Thanks for all the knowledge your dropping while you're having a grand time fabbing. Keep rockin it Paul 👍🏻
Great work and great fun! I like it that you let your son work away until he needs a tip and then let him work some more. One eye and on ear always on the youngsters as they learn.
Paul, You have a Great set of Eyecrominters.,and your skills at fabrocating are Awesome. This schedule of videos is great. Keep them coming. God Bless
Good one Dad! I knew a guy, Curtis, back in highschool who was working under his VW with a couple of VW jacks holding it up. His twin brother found him the next day. RIP Curtis.
I love Paul's humor I like you an don't want you to die an when nothing is up is when I get nervous straight to the point good work on the fj it's coming along
That was cute you an yours hot momma going for a rip snot on the scooter couple goals you can tell you guys are meant for each other people just don't stay together these days so good example
That snap gave me chills. I know the feeling when you break your last tap.
Paul good lesson for your son about climbing under the truck without blocking it up. Reminded me of an tragedy years ago. A buddy was working the scales on the interstate. A trucker came through and after the inspection he asked if it would be ok if he parked his cabover out back to do some maintenance on it. At lunch time my buddy noticed the driver had the cab tilted and appeared to be working on the engine, but didn’t pay much attention. When my buddy went off duty he noticed the truck was still there with the cab tilted. He walked over and discovered the cab had come down pinning the driver and killing him hours earlier. Never get under anything that can come down on you be it a vehicle, a tractor bucket, a crate on a forklift or anything else. That’s probably why when I was a kid we used to say it was bad luck to walk under a ladder. Everyone stay safe, healthy and have a Merry Christmas!
There's room for two on this hawg... Another great video. Thanks for all you do. This is FAR more than watching a country boy weld stuff! Merry Christmas to you and the entire Rat family. This one will be tough, no doubt. You all will be in our thoughts.
One more step closer to the FJ45 being done. Nice layout to floorboard center panel.
Can't wait to see this build when it's complete, such a cool wagon. Thanks for another great video, and a big hello to all of you from Ireland
That's going to be a beast!!!!!
Thank you for your hard work and great information. I have a 72 scout two. Work in progress....I use a lot of your ideas..... Thank you Paul!!!!
2 hands on the wheel Paul! Drive safe storm is kind of on the weak end! Roads are clear
Yep i keep 2 dismounted 22.5" truck rims with some 4,x 4 lag bolted thru stud holes and center hub pilot hole so as to have some wide foot cribbing to put under the heavy stuff. Hasnt fallen yet.
good call there teaching him about being safe around raised vehicles.. Never Ever go under a raised vehicle without good stands to keep it raised. i cut the end of my index finger off lying on my back removing a gearbox thought i could hold it by hand and it dropped onto my finger and bellhousing chopped the end off.. :) that car was only held up withj a couple of bricks. learned my lesson.
Paul, safety is the #1 thing in working on anything glad to see you teaching the kids that... That was the best part of this whole video...
Fridays and Fab Rats can't get any better.
I am a old school welder of about fourteen years . and I am impressed with the work you do . keep it up .
14 years ur just getting started. Keep it up 👍💪
I like the ongoing projects, FJ & the Nugget, etc..Then a walk-in shows up to add unforeseen variety. Today he talks about his control lever addition like it’s an everyday occurrence to make the change. Looks like he might be putting in “controls for flaps or to lower his landing gear😎
That Koppla is pretty cool.
Very nice calm advice and handled very well correcting your son's mistake on overlooking his safety.
Good video, not much done on the fj, but it is coming along . It all takes a little time.
"I'd rather be lucky, than good." every time, sir. Every single time.
Oh snap! 2 videos back to back! Let me grab some popcorn
Nice move uncle Paul tellin that young man to safety up out there in the yard I really dig that!!!I allways used put the tires under the edge of the car when I pull them off to do brake jobs and such before I had jackstands...it keeps me from gettin my legs or head crushed!!WE have to teach the youngsters safety we obviously werent born with it..
And with western bars, a dang good comfort seat, heck ya. Am kinda wondering about your "cup holders" that seem to be in everything now days.. with that a screen in the middle of dash with google earth an a backup camera. Oh ya, styling
"I kinda like ya. I don't want you dead." Love it! Good job, Paul. Love the words of wisdom... "If you can't be good at anything, you better be good at guessing."
Paul awesome video buddy!! Glad to see some more progress on the awesome wheeler that you have been working on for a while now!! But the best part was getting the new hog in the mail!! I definitely loved it bud!!
Paul, I recommend a GM steering column on the FJ as the ignition switch is where you are used to it, rather than on the left, and because it will look cool when you are done.
It's always good to see your educational program and that your having fun 😀 God bless you guys and be safe 😀 🙏 😊 ❤️
We would be proud doing anyone of these builds in our lifetime and you have like 4 going at once. You are on fire.
Great job on the floor came out nice And neat Paul and Randall!
Really cool that top buckle on 😎
It looks pretty good without the shifters poking out of it!!!! I like it!!!!
This summer welding new rockers on my daughters subaru wagon. Had a jackstand under back axle forgot it was a std and didn t chock the front wheels. I was lucky all I have is a permanantly dislocated collarbone. Rocker left a cut on my neck it was that close.
Good to see you now have a camera man / assistant. Randall is a good addition to the channel.
Okay you must be reading my mind. My 1990 short van conversion to four-wheel-drive it's going to require that exact shifter setup it's like you're getting experience in converting my 4x4 van
A little tip for you. If you're snapping chaulk lines on new steel then use yellow chaulk. Sooooo much easier to see. Blue and red tends to blend in to the mill scale color
Yup I always have 3 chalk boxes w all 3 colors.
Good video Paul the Yoda is taking shape. I see the golden nugget in the background put to the side and finish the Yoda lol.
1 Highlight of the day is to hear the laughter they bring.
God Bless and have a great day ya'll 🇺🇸
Keep up the great work please.
I like how the boy is wrenchin, also I liked how you used a piece of the old trans tunnel for the new! Well done!
Paul,I just love this channel. Your attitude and sense of humor are pure gold. Reminds me of an old song , Too Much Fun, by Daryle Singletary.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍
Great vidio as always 👍good teachin with Landon! 👍like your eyecrometer, it was cleaned and on point today.
There is more rust on a one year old Canadian truck, with all the salt they spread up here. Still some on the roads from last week! Not that they can get away from it, 🥶 really trying to say how nice and clean your toyota is!!! WOW!!! Well both of them! Yall have a Peaceful week.
👌✌🏻👋🏻 ❄ 🇨🇦 😎.
Gonna be great to see that yota when its done. I love your videos guys. Great clean entertainment lol.
Anyone else click the like button even before the first advertisement is over... 2 seconds after clicking the video it gets an automatic thumbs up! 👍🏻😊 Anyways entertaining and inspiring stuff
Lookin good Paul!...good job everyone!...OH NO TIRES!....LMAO!...thanks 4 video. be kind.
Love JB Custom Fab, use them in my diesel swap TJ Wrangler, great quality stuff made in the USA.
I never get enough on your stories, but I'll live. Love the Toyota build.
Ha ha ha ha, classic move, "I'm just gonna work under the forklift like this...." He was confident, though, gotta hand it to em'. He had no worries about working under the truck like that.
Ill give him that lol, but im not trusting the hydraulics on anything man. Ive seen too much and been covered in hot hydraulic oil too many times so im aware that lines break outta nowhere and shit just falls
I’ve always been amazed at what you use to drive your taps. I’ve pretty much always used one of those adjustable tap wrenches and do it nice and slow by hand. I feel like I have better control and less likely to mess it up but I also have a lot less experience then Paul
I believe he uses a purpose made tapping adapter. I need to pay closer attention but I use one with my impact and love it
Man I love watching you guys and your having fun to boot! AWESOME!!!
Fun video, thanks!
Loving the progress so far. And if it works it works brotha. She'll be a ripper!!!!!
ever think about using Friction drill bits that burn a hole in metal and leave a boss that can be tapped the are awesome no more nuts in inconvenient to reach spots
I would love to see a motovlog on that little electric thing!! And that toyota its comming together faster than i was expecting ! As always awesome video, and the fire story hahaha. Good thing Paul is a firefighter
LoL @ the broken tap. I was watching saying: "He's just about to break that..." SNAP. LOL.
Great video for a Friday as as always..👍
A double back to back 🎉👏💯.. Glad to see yall today. Much love and wishing you a happy holidays 🎄🎁🤗
I use my eyecrometer alot too! Trans tunnel looks good. That's a pretty cool scooter!
Good call on safety Paul. I almost knew you were going to suggest something before he went under it.
