I'm from Spain so when I watched the series as a kid i couldn't read the dialogues at all, still, with only seeing the animation I could understand what was happening, the sad backstory of Sonic and Shadow, the importance of the chaos emeralds, the anger of shadow and I acknowledged the incredible strength of metal sonic and the threat it was. The series made me feel what was happening and didn't care about the language barrier, and that was and still is the special thing that made me love Super Mario Bros Z. Thank You for reminding me of this.

There is really no big difference between this an something like a robot chicken clip, same characters and concepts in a different context with a completely different purpose. Probably the only real violation is the music, since its just presented as it is. I don't know, i'm no legal expert but i do think he might have a good case or at the very least he might only get a cease and desist and then don't want to risk going to court. I don't see nintendo seeking monetary compensation for this and winning. If they do then the system is seriously more broken than i anticipated

To this day, Genesis does what Nintendon’t. Think about it, when presented with fangames or fan animations like this, SEGA doesn’t have a fit and is actually so impressed they hire the people to come work on their games, like with Chris Whitehead and those other guys who worked on Sonic Mania. They actually respect the creativity of their fans and let them stay online with no troubles. Nintendo meanwhile, absolutely loathes these passion projects. Look no further to this and AM2R. AM2R was a game that took years to make and didn’t ask for any money from people and was free, it was a mans passion project that he spent years developing, taking a gameboy game and giving it the quality of something beyond even a Super Nintendo game and even adding in some new stuff that surprisingly fit in and was amazing. But Nintendo couldn’t have any of this. If anything it looked like they were jealous of the quality of AM2R, because their remake of Metroid II was coming out and it was inferior to AM2R. So rather than let it stay, or even try to hire the guy like SEGA would, they try to scrub away its existence from the internet. Nintendo has no love for their fans that want to give their franchises that have no love from them the attention and care they deserve. With them shutting down this guys Patreon when he was at the height of SMBZ and making gold, it only goes to solidify more just how much they hate love filled respectful passion fan projects. If you think Nintendo is already bad with TH-cam now, it’s only going to get worse from here folks.
It really did feel like a kick in the teeth to both Mark and the fans when Nintendo shut down his Patreon page. And keep in mind this was back when Nintendo was still super stingy and unfair with their copyright claims and fan made game take downs (which still happen). But I am so happy I got to experience Super Mario Bros Z, as it is one of my favorite TH-cam/Internet series of all time.
Except in this case, they had every right to. Mark was trying to make a dime using their creations, which isn't fair game. He could easily have gone on to create it for free, but that takes time and effort one simply doesn't always have as an adult. It's also less a kick in the teeth when you see what Mark's been up to lately. You start to lose your sympathy when you watch him attacking and badmouthing Nintendo and its fans on Twitter.
I am sad of course, I love the series. But honestly all he had to do was not mention Mario and stuff on his patreon, then it would have just been a patreon to support his living and not funding for a series based on copyrighted characters. Here s to the small possibility of him ever continuing the series. He d be sure to still get plenty of support.

SMBZ is so well known and beloved, it found it’s way to official works. Mecha Sonic said “I’LL CRUSH YOU”, in an official IDW comic, where I believe a writer stated to be a fan. And the Mario film, you can see influences of it as well during fights

Oh, Super Mario Bros. Z was a delight back then. Mark (or Alvin) has amazing talent and it is quite a shame that due to complications, he wasn't able to complete the reboot. I don't blame him. But I do hope he will come back in the future. And the humor of this video is so wonderful!

Listen, sprite animation is a VERY tedious process, and Mark took this to the next level in 2009! And seeing this in the present day REALLY shows that he can do more than people give him credit for, which by the way, he deserves NONE of! What he needs is love and support, not hate and Nintendo being total idiots! Both Mark and the series, SMBZ have really inspired me to do my best and to not let people get me down. Heck, this series, among other things, is what inspired me to do sprite animations in the first place! This show was my jam. I was so ticked when they stopped. But I was suddenly put in a great mood when the reboot pilot came out. And I've had Mario Bros Super episode 1 to tide me over.
The thing about SMBZ fights (especially the later ones) is how often the fights have *carried momentum* that just keeps going, people get slung one direction and slam into another, what goes up must come down, it feels so strangely satisfying.
This series was such a highlight back in the day. I would anticipate every episode and look for any updates on newgrounds. I was so sad learning of Alvin's mental health and I just let myself think it would never come back. When the reboot happened it was a shock...then Nintendo ruined it. I understand copyright issues but man it hurt. Hopefully he is recovering well and if he decides to come back that'll be great. If not then at least he made a wonderful series that inspired so many flash artists.

This series introduced a whole new style of fight choregraphy. Sure there's Dragon Ball sounds and stuff, but that speedy, constantly scrolling in one direction, usually involving more than two characters at the same time, and often even more than two parties, is really its own, beautiful thing.
I must say, you are a much better youtuber than the top dogs with millions of subscribers just because of how much time and energy is put into every video you make! The you tubers with millions of views are super discouraged of making videos, but you have the correct energy and drive to make videos! So I will say this, keep on trucking dude, keep going in this direction and you will soon get to 1mil if you keep it up!
Thanks for taking a look at this. This really proved the advent of sprite animation, and I loved it. I really do hope Mark gets the help he needs, and he gets better. However, there is Smasher Block, who's basically making a spiritual successor to SMBZ, and it is glorious! The animation is so good, I think Mark would be proud too.

Super Mario Bros Z has touched my heart. As a inspiring artist and animator. I vow to uphold the legacy of animation including flash animations that have sparked a major impact on my work. No matter what people say and how much it aged, SMBZ will forever be a series that has given nothing but a whole generation of animators who've achieved greatness but can never out do Alvin-Earthworm. Mecha Sonic is one of the most dangerous and violent SMBZ characters of the series, even though he is just a robot separate from Metal Sonic designed by Doctor Eggman in the classic Sonic canon. When making a series, you can't just make it out of wanting to get money in your wallet, but how much heart and soul you put into it. I've heard people jab at Alvin-Earthworm for how he basically gave up, but even a creator cannot satisfy the fan base enough as his reboot series would've brought back the age of his success. Super Mario Bros Z is what happens when you mix two gaming franchises with a hint of anime to make a beloved series made from the heart and creative imagination. Alvin-Earthworm, you're legacy will live on for generations to come.

Have you by any chance seen a certain OTHER Super Mario Bros. Z? It currently has one episode which was done two months ago. It was made by a person named SmasherBlock. Dude, seriously check it out. It's got to be one of the greatest things that has ever been made in flash since SMBZ. It's basically a re-reboot of the series and OH MY LORD THE ANIMATION IS JUST BREATH TAKING! I kind of had one problem with the Mark SMBZ and that was that the characters stood still when long dialog was being given. It kind of makes the ep 7 somewhat hard to watch, but this one done by SmasherBlock makes the characters move giving that little bit of life whenever someone is talking in DBZ lengths of time. Seriously, go watch it. It's amazing.

I cannot physically tell you just how much I love this video. Super Mario Bros. Z was my childhood too, I continue to love it even now, and it held an impact on me! And getting to have Bolt talk about it is just too good to be true! Let us hope that SMBZ continues in some way.

Oh, Super Mario Bros. Z was a delight back then. Mark (or Alvin) has amazing talent and it is quite a shame that due to complications, he wasn't able to complete the reboot. I don't blame him. But I do hope he will come back in the future.

Dude, honestly, I agree with you entirely. This entire video essay is me in a nutshell, both in 2009 and even NOW! Listen, sprite animation is a VERY tedious process, and Mark took this to the next level in 2009! And seeing this in the present day REALLY shows that he can do more than people give him credit for, which by the way, he deserves NONE of! What he needs is love and support, not hate and Nintendo being total idiots! Both Mark and the series, SMBZ have really inspired me to do my best and to not let people get me down. Heck, this series, among other things, is what inspired me to do sprite animations in the first place! [I haven't done any yet, but I'm looking forward to!] Sorry for the ramble, but something really needed to be said, and this video pretty much did it for me. You have earned a sub!

The thing about SMBZ fights (especially the later ones) is how often the fights have *carried momentum* that just keeps going, people get slung one direction and slam into another, what goes up must come down, it feels so strangely satisfying.

This series was such a highlight back in the day. I would anticipate every episode and look for any updates on newgrounds. I was so sad learning of Alvin's mental health and I just let myself think it would never come back. When the reboot happened it was a shock...then Nintendo ruined it. I understand copyright issues but man it hurt. Hopefully he is recovering well and if he decides to come back that'll be great. If not then at least he made a wonderful series that inspired so many flash artists.

i am one of several animators who had smbz as motivation to make animations! (smbz is the best thing that ever happened to me)
damn i grew up with this too. it made me so sad when I found out about the creators problems with depression.
That and Nintendo pretty much gave him a dmca which threatens legal action.

This series introduced a whole new style of fight choregraphy. Sure there's Dragon Ball sounds and stuff, but that speedy, constantly scrolling in one direction, usually involving more than two characters at the same time, and often even more than two parties, is really its own, beautiful thing.

The you tubers with millions of views are super discouraged of making videos, but you have the correct energy and drive to make videos! However, there is Smasher Block, who's basically making a spiritual successor to SMBZ, and it is glorious! The animation is so good, I think Mark would be proud too.

Super Mario Bros Z has touched my heart. As a inspiring artist and animator. I vow to uphold the legacy of animation including flash animations that have sparked a major impact on my work. No matter what people say and how much it aged, SMBZ will forever be a series that has given nothing but a whole generation of animators who've achieved greatness but can never out do Alvin-Earthworm.
Mecha Sonic is one of the most dangerous and violent SMBZ characters of the series, even though he is just a robot separate from Metal Sonic designed by Doctor Eggman in the classic Sonic canon.
When making a series, you can't just make it out of wanting to get money in your wallet, but how much heart and soul you put into it.
I've heard people jab at Alvin-Earthworm for how he basically gave up, but even a creator cannot satisfy the fan base enough as his reboot series would've brought back the age of his success.
Super Mario Bros Z is what happens when you mix two gaming franchises with a hint of anime to make a beloved series made from the heart and creative imagination.
Alvin-Earthworm, you're legacy will live on for generations to come.

God, I remember Super Mario Bros. Z when I was a kid. The way the episodes evolved into something amazing and just kept raising the bar up so much in terms of fights, character interactions, and story. It's a real damn shame that the series never got that ending or even continued from it's reboot. Massive respect for the guy making the series and I do hope he's doing well.
HOWEVER! Have you by any chance seen a certain OTHER Super Mario Bros. Z? It currently has one episode which was done two months ago. It was made by a person named SmasherBlock. Dude, seriously check it out. It's got to be one of the greatest things that has ever been made in flash since SMBZ. It's basically a re-reboot of the series and OH MY LORD THE ANIMATION IS JUST BREATH TAKING! I kind of had one problem with the Mark SMBZ and that was that the characters stood still when long dialog was being given. It kind of makes the ep 7 somewhat hard to watch, but this one done by SmasherBlock makes the characters move giving that little bit of life whenever someone is talking in DBZ lengths of time. Seriously, go watch it. It's amazing.

Honestly, my favorite part of this video is how genuinely excited bolt is about this.
