Athena insomuch as we can get a dig into her character that she **debuts** in _The Titan's Curse_ is a strident pragmatist, she'll take the option most strategically sound, and, yeah, the goddess speaks as to the prospect of killing her blood relatives Thalia & Perseus in such terms. (I'm paraphrasing here): That you *_are_* left alive, you two scions of the Big Three, that there *_is_* a danger that you indeed _destroy_ Olympos... is it not to be said that it be better that we slay them? 😶
Athena sees relationships in general as an unwise decision, especially with someone whose flaw is loyalty. Also, she really dislikes that Percy, who has proven time and again he will choose to save his friends over any other decision, is responsible for potentially saving Olympus.
To be fair on the Athena criticism in the show. Rick does some stuff with Athena in the Heroes of Olympus series that paints her in a more unflattering light. Including introducing Arachne and her story in the third book. But yeah, that stuff wasn't really in the original Percy Jackson series.
I mean there’s that story about medusa, or how athena forces a child on a guy who doesn’t want and not ready for a child, athena immediately hate on a boy who’s saved his daughter and loyal to demigods just because of her rivalry with poseidon, etc
I remember getting into Percy Jackson because I just saw a bunch of kids in my class had the first book and thinking "The Lightning Thief? That sounds rad as hell!"
For me it was part of our class’ book reading. Doubt it had been out very long at the time. I had enjoyed the book enough i bought the books as they came out for years after that class.
I loved when Percy first gets to his apartment in the series Sally is sitting on a tiny balcony in the rain, letting the rain hit her face. The way it was shot it felt like Poseidon made the clouds open for HER. Even though Percy hates Poseidon at first, there are small hints that Sally loves and misses him and Poseidon feels the same. I also loved how easily Sally manipulates Gabe. Like it's clear he sucks and is at least mildly abusive but the way she gets him to lend her the car is SO awesome. She just feels like an independent character which makes it sting all the more when she's almost killed and then taken by Hades. Basically I LOVED Sally and Poseidon in the show, they nailed it!! I didn't like other things about the show (*cough* tension *cough*), but the casting was great :)
@@olotocoloi wish they had added some more dirt on Gabe as well. The books taught me growing up that an abusive parent doesn't deserve your loyalty of love through uglianos character
I find it wierd though that the show just connects poseidon with any kind of water when Rain is Zeus' Domain, poseidon doesnt control rain Which would be weird as it would be like zeus is the one comforting Sally not poseidon
I kind of had the opposite reaction to that. The show paints Gabe as just pathetic. I never once get the vibe that he has the spine to stand up to Sally, let alone hurt her. Gabe in the show deserves a swift kick in the balls and a reality check, he doesn't deserve to die. It honestly makes Sally feel weaker than her book counterpart, to me, because book Sally chose to put up with years of abuse for Percy's sake, show Sally put up with an annoying waste of space. One of these things is much more impressive than the other. Gabe's characterisation is one thing I think the film did much better than the show
I could totally see the Sphinx putting on a bib and setting out silverwear as it hums the tune of Jeopardy after asking the question, just to distract and make the heroes anxious.
Thank you for talking about this series written by one of my favourite authors (even though I am far outside the target demographics), I just love how well Uncle Rick plays with the myths and weaves this entirely new world from them. It was an off-handed snarky comment at an appropriate time but just to avoid confusion, I wanted to point out that Rick himself wrote the a good portion of the show and had a lot of creative control. He also talked about how he took the opportunity to fix mistakes in his earlier work - one example being the Arc, which he had falsely assumed was next to the river. Also there were themes he only fully developed later on (i.e. Zeus being an abusive father) but now takes the chance to include in the early parts of the story. I strongly recommend the 'Apollo' series, which is quite unusual with an initially almost entirely unlikeable protagonist (Apollo himself), which is also written from inside his head (which Red surely would appreciate) and spills a lot of the tea on what is going on behind the scenes on Olympus.
In the “what monster would you send as a god question” I would like to submit the resume of the undead soldiers from the titans curse, the spartoi. Simple as they may be, they are skilled warriors with excellent tracking abilities that just can’t be beat by anyone who doesn’t have ties to the underworld. Also, since they are humanoid, you’re not going to be able to lose them by going somewhere they won’t fit.
11:07 congrats! you dodged the problem that many Percy Jackson fans have. It's also difficult when you're not the closest with either of your parents, so you have to try and decide which one isn't actually your parent to make yourself feel a little better
Personally I just decided that my dad was Hades and he just loved us better than being a god in the Underworld so he stayed with us and lived as a regular ass dad lol.

The show was good for a live-action Disney piece, but as so many people have said, it would've been MUCH better animated. All I could really think while watching it was "this is why I dont like live-action that much"
That's a weird thing to say, live-action has its uses same as animation. But it's obvious that it was always gonna be live action, most of these books were made for that medium
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 would it make more sense if I specified my disliked media as recent Disney liveaction work? I thought about saying as much but I didn't wanna be repetitive
@@emiliobustamante2401 It's not really a story that NEEDs to be animated. Sad we never got any animated Harry Potter content before JK trashed her reputation. The books and the covers have a really cute, unique art style that never got used for anything.
I completely agreed on how they should’ve have just let the reason Athena let Echidna in her “sacred” place is to see if Annabeth and her friends can prove themselves to be dependable demigods, rather than making it look like Athena was super disappointed with her own daughter that she’ll allowed her to get hurt or worst… killed. I think they made Athena way too harsh on Annabeth, the only time that happened is when she became Minerva
Personally, I think that the love shared between Poseidon and Sally is the reason why Percy is so powerful. Sally was able to connect to Poseidon in such a level (I mean, he called her a queen among women and wanted to build a palace for her), that when they...procreated, Poseidon either a) combined with Neptune, or b) became Mycenaean Poseidon. This would explain why Percy can control even the Underworld rivers, as well as create earthquakes and even do slight magic with the "ward-off evil" sign. The same pattern seems to follow with Nico: Hades loved Maria deeply, and their son has an extensive amount of control over the dead and shadows. By contrast, other Big 3 kids like Thalia, Jason, and Hazel aren't considered to be on the same level, and their parents really didn't love each other: Beryl only loved Zeus for his powers and title, and Zeus probably saw Beryl as a nuisance; Marie called upon Pluto and desired to have his riches, which Pluto warned against.
Around 45 Minutes, the question of Hermes dicking the heroes around comes up. I think it's a question of family loyalty. He could not help Luke before. Now he's trying to keep his son out of the hot seat. If Percy and Co. fail? Luke is not exposed, and Hermes' complicity (even if it's forced as "your kid will go down for this if you don't help") isn't revealed either. Hermes does not want Luke to hurt more than he already has been... it's a common parental mistake, especially when overcompensating for bad choices in the past.
This does not come until later in the books, but on the subject of Athena not being an angry or wrathful goddess in the original series- this comes into light during The Mark of Athena, with her Roman counterpart. Condemning Annabeth to die in the St. Louis Arch gives the same vibes as Minerva commanding Annabeth to follow the Mark of Athena. No spoilers but if you know you know!
As someone mentioned above, she was kinda wack in titans curse. Also could be Rick doing more research and finding more ‘mega oof’ moments with Athena in the mythology. In the lore book (another modern day greek myth book SPOILERS Athena is one of the worst, arguably being one of the main bads.)

I liked how in the book, they run out to the street, flag down a cab, and when the driver asks for money, they try the casino card and it shows a balance of Infinity ♾️. And for lotus casino song candidates, maybe a very brief moment of “welcome to the hotel California” maybe quietly playing in the casino hotel room or something. 55:05 Python actually appears in a late series. It takes place after Heroes of Olympus and is called The Trials of Apollo where Apollo gets blamed for a lot of what happens in the previous series, so Zeus makes him mortal as punishment. The Roman emperors and Python have been overtaking all of Apollo’s various Oracles to the point that it starts messing with Rachel Dare’s prophecies. Apollo needs to defeat the emperors, with the finale being his fight against Python and in order to return to Olympus he has to restore all of his Oracles back to himself. It’s really fun and entertaining, all of the chapters are haikus by Apollo himself, and he gets stuck in the body of a 16 year old Lester Papadopoulos and him walking around complaining about his lack of divinity, abs, and general talent is hilarious, definitely recommend reading

I've always interpreted the gods in Percy Jackson to be the personification of the angel on humanity's shoulder. The gods can do a lot of things for humans, but one thing they can't do for us, is fight the devil on our other shoulder...humanity literally stands between them. This is why the world needs heroes to defeat monsters, humidity has to be strong enough to conquer its own demons because the gods and the monsters are just manifestations of the same thing..... humanity's collective belief in them

Oh god. This series was so damn much of my kidhood and teenage years, and I'm looking forwards to seeing more of it. It's dear to me for a LOT of reasons. 1. I am genderfluid, and Alex Fierro from Magnus Chase is kinda how I figured it out. Seeing actual honest representation of how I felt literally unlocked that for me. It was amazing. 2. Growing up, I didn't register it at the time because I was a kid and it was "normal," but my parents were... pretty shitty in a lot of ways. The idea that I could secretly be a demigod, that I could have an escape and be more than an abused kid hiding in their room, meant a LOT. 3. I am a mythology kid to the core, and even if it's inaccurate at times, I adore how well a lot of it is done. This series was a core part of my childhood, and I'm very happy to see it covered!

on the topic of Athena, the later series tend to paint her in a much harsher light, which is where i assumed the show got the more vengeful, crueler Athena it uses
The athena in the show feels a lot like athena in Mark of Athena where she was supposed to feel out of character and strangely vindictive. Her characterisation now could have long lasting adaptation implications if the show ever lasts that long, but for now it seems to be another case of the characterisation changing over time (which isnt a bad thing, its character growth) and the show drawing characterisation from across the book series rather than just the first book.
There is something so undeniably delightful about finding out two creators you have discovered independently from each other, seem to be friends. I truly didn´t know there was any crossover with Dominic Noble, but in hindsight, it does make perfect sense.

52:00 I reckon if you really want to catch yourself a demigod, then send either Kampê or Orion. One is a super powerful jailer, and the other is one of the greatest hunters in the lore of the books
My opinion of the Lotus Casino scene has nothing to do with what they did with the Movie and everything to do with the fact that Disney, owner of THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH, IN SIX DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, couldn't be bothered to drive the actors to the park after closing one day and shoot some b-roll on some of the rides, at no significant expense to themselves. Instead, we have the Lotus Casino: a place with 4 craps tables, a couple rows of slot machines, one VR area, one restaurant, and the kids interact with little to none of it.

Thanks for having me on the show! It was a delight and an honor to talk PJO with you all!
You should totally have an episode where you invite them onto your podcast because I could hear you guys talk about Percy Jackson for hours!
@@amandahealey2216 Well hey Red's been on the show a few times, the others might pop up, maybe they've already been in some unreleased episodes 👀
@@amandahealey2216yeah, I don’t know why, but I think Mike and Dom would be great friends.
I read it because my friend loved talking about them, so I picked up a book from the library, and I became obsessed
Blue: I'm from Athens so if I don't represent Athena I'm disrespecting my bloodline!
Also Blue: I'm a son of Posiden
I hope Blue isn’t planning on visiting any Arches
Poseidon*
Feels like a similar train of thought that led Annabeth to becoming Percy's friend
That was Mike who said son of Poseidon. Their voices are very similar
So was Theseus in some myths, and he was the king of Athens.
Sadly it very very much not book loyal for gabe to be okaish person especially that he is still killed
@@olotocoloi wish they had added some more dirt on Gabe as well. The books taught me growing up that an abusive parent doesn't deserve your loyalty of love through uglianos character
I find it wierd though that the show just connects poseidon with any kind of water when Rain is Zeus' Domain, poseidon doesnt control rain
Which would be weird as it would be like zeus is the one comforting Sally not poseidon
@@RaixsOreh I mean, one of Poseidon's many titles is Stormbringer, he definitely has some power over rain.
Of course, Blue would be a child of Athena! His love of Domes was in his blood from the beginning XD.
12:33 I love that we're talking about godly parents, and we managed to mention all three of the virgin goddesses
Hestia is also a virgin goddess and I don't think she got mentioned
@Neutral_Tired Huge disappointment to child me, Hestia is my patron goddess.
My favorite thing to do when someone says that they like Percy Jackson is to say
“Oh I love those movies”
The reactions are priceless
Pure Evil.
You're evil
“The movies are better”

Great idea for next time, thank you
@@thebaldcat6708 “than the books”
Well uh my situation was perfect(?) in that I was 10 and had an absent father + a single mom, so I was crushed when I never got sent to Camp
@@LuneWatcher could you figure out what god your mum would date? These personality quizzes always forget the fact that your parent chooses the god
@@leahstone9938 Huhh you're right, weirdly Apollo fits the most lmao, but I do not fit the bill for a child of Apollo at all.
My biological dad became less involved in mine and my sister's lives over the years after he and my mom broke up to the point where I've given up on him so I'm more the happy to replace I'm with a god if said god isn't round I won't be any different
Animation would have also spared them issues filming a series with a young protagonist have: the fact Walker already looks way older
@@ianbrudnakvoss3126 You mean like the remakes?
@@emiliobustamante2401 It's not really a story that NEEDs to be animated. Sad we never got any animated Harry Potter content before JK trashed her reputation. The books and the covers have a really cute, unique art style that never got used for anything.
Props to Red for mentioning the musical… which is boss!!!
Thinking from the hades game perspective, kinda makes sense though. Hell hath no fury like a god/goddess scorned and they are incredibly petty.
38:29 my biggest complaint is how they exited the Lotus casino.
I liked how in the book, they run out to the street, flag down a cab, and when the driver asks for money, they try the casino card and it shows a balance of Infinity ♾️. That was my favorite part of that section of the book.
And for lotus casino song candidates, maybe a very brief moment of “welcome to the hotel California” maybe quietly playing in the casino hotel room or something.
Otherwise for the rest of it, I don’t have a strong opinion…
For the song, YES! That is so good!
I LIKE the Trials of Apollo. It’s too bad that you almost have to have read Heros of Olympus to get it, because I love Apollo as narrator. He puts the un in unreliable.
@@professorbutters why is it bad that you have to read heroes of Olympus before getting to Trials of Apollo?

As an avid fan of all of these people, today i learned i can't tell Blue's and Mike's voices apart… Unexpected since i spend SO MUCH TIME listening to them both.
I also just remembered that I told Mike about the existence of OPS on a patreon livestream once, so I will be taking full credit for this crossover forever. Thank you and you're welcome ☺
I always get the Poseidon and I mean: I'm an underwater archaeologist, I excavate shipwrecks, breathing underwater world be great
You have an awesome job.
I've always interpreted the gods in Percy Jackson to be the personification of the angel on humanity's shoulder. The gods can do a lot of things for humans, but one thing they can't do for us, is fight the devil on our other shoulder...humanity literally stands between them. This is why the world needs heroes to defeat monsters, humidity has to be strong enough to conquer its own demons because the gods and the monsters are just manifestations of the same thing..... humanity's collective belief in them
Apparently it’s not as common to read every Percy Jackson related thing under the sun as I thought. But this was amazing anyway!
> Red, I know how much you hate them (Percy Jackson)
Oh yeah, off to a great start🔥🔥
I saw Percy Jackson and was immediately summoned
I am putting in my vote for the dragon's dogma chimera as coolest chimera. If you kill the main head, its rigging and behavior changes as the goat head takes over. Very cool.
So does the God of War 3 chimera.
@@marknut9741except in Dragons Dogma you can take care of the different parts in any order and all three parts are working in tandem with eachother instead of taking turns.
tbh i am SO glad that other people watched the musical and it wasn't a fever dream I had
(also Drive, D.O.A, and Put You In Your Place are amazing songs and i will die on this hill)
In regard to the music choice I know it doesn't fit location wise but the lyrics to Hotel California sell being trapped somewhere and the guitar solo always hits
My Mum and I used to read them aloud to each other while the other was doing the dishes, I think most recently that was 2020-2021 when I was home from Uni (lockdown and xmas) - truly a classic honestly, we worked through like 4 of Rick's series
My mom gave me The Lightning Thief as a kid that I read over and over again until I got sick of it, not knowing the Sea of Monsters existed until I got a library card and read the book again and saw the inside page saying the Sea of Monsters was coming out.
that is so cute! i bet you were super excited LOL
If Rick ever brings back the sphinx I want it to be a jeopardy thing. Not bc they'll actually play jeopardy but bc I want the sphinx to tell Annabeth that they took her notes into consideration but also still needed to make it appealing for an audience.
I *DIED* laughing when Mike said he wanted to be OSP Tickle-me-Pink
hehe it's the best crayola color in terms of name AND shade!
Glad to see Dominic here.
Oh the Dom is the Dominic Noble, you had my curiosity but now you have my attention
Lets be honest, the only good addition in the second movie was 'Hey, don't walk on my roof!'
Yes😂
"the Christians have a guy who can do this trick in reverse, now THERE'S a god!"
Clarice snapping a picture of grover in a dress her phone and him going "Do not let that go viral!!! 😡😡😡" is pretty great too
I should've expected Schubes, but I still didn't see it coming. And so I definitely didn't see Dominic Noble coming. Very excited to listen.
I have been enjoying Dominic's videos for 1 year, OSP for 4 years.
- Indigo is Dominic's editor?!
- This adjusted Red's age into danger zone. Red has my humor and creativity. When I saw Red looks extremely like (and sounds like) an ex-girlfriend, I calculated Red was born before Susan moved away. Red, if your mother is named Susan, please contact me.
Boys, deep lore just dropped in
Gaslight, Gatekeep, Gorgon... Great stuff everyone
52:36 knew I could count on Red, the resident hunter, to remember it was in The Titan's Curse

An hour of this amazing podcast and about percy jackson?! YES PLEASE 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
Dom: “Blue, what have you done?!”
Blue: “That which thou canst not undo.”
Red: “I got that reference.”
Me: “So did I!”
I never read the original series, but I did read the heroes of olympus books and really liked those, so I've decided to go back.
Girlboss, Gatekeep, Gorgon! Brilliant!
"WHAT BOOK DID YOU READ?"
"uh... The Lightning Thief"
XD
I really do love Percy Jackson. The graphic novels were my ideal form of media and they were genuinely such a good read.
I would’ve read the books, I have the lightning thief at home, but unfortunately I fell victim to the gaston disease of “how can you read this? There’s not even any pictures!” So I dropped it, but I’d love to pick it back up sometime.
I just want to point out that Indigo choosing Dionysus as her godly parent makes way more sense than she thinks. Dionysus is the reason we have the performing arts and Indigo is the Queen of Podcasts. She also loves movies! Come on! Every theatre kid would end up in Dionysus' or Apollo's Cabin!
Knowing that Indigo edits Dominic's video adds some great contextual lore
Blue, the cobra thing you're talking about is called a hood. Unless it was actually like the dilophosaurus thing you mentioned, in which case it's called a frill.
Oh this is going to be fun. Can’t wait to hear the OSP (and guests) discussing Percy Jackson.
on the topic of Athena, the later series tend to paint her in a much harsher light, which is where i assumed the show got the more vengeful, crueler Athena it uses
14:45 I now have an image of Heracles picking up a dude, and smashing the dude into his forehead like a beer tinnie.
There is something so undeniably delightful about finding out two creators you have discovered independently from each other, seem to be friends. I truly didn´t know there was any crossover with Dominic Noble, but in hindsight, it does make perfect sense.
Hunter of Artemis is definitely NOT a cop out btw that's literally such a good answer. Esp for Red who's ace iirc (?) no downsides!
Indigo edits Dom's videos? I didnt know that! Neato!
Something the movies did well: introducing hippocampi to popular audiences and making them pretty
Oh my god this is the day. It has finally come 😭
OH WOW DOMINIC IS HERE!!!!
This is gonna be my favorite ever
My 9 year old cousin just started reading them. I immediately gave her my copies of the first 5 books
13:50 another fun obscure power. Considering that Poseidon is the god of sailing, earthquakes and storms, his kids probably have unnaturally steady footing. You'd never just trip over your own feet or anything embarrassing like that
Osp…and Percy Jackson…my dreams have come true!

Hooray! OSP is doing Percy Jackson stuff!
I'm rattling on the bars of my enclosure begging anyone who reads this comment to read Trials Of Apollo. Heroes of Olympus is a bit of a step down from PJ but Trials Of Apollo is phenomenal in every aspect and it has so many queers and I know we all like those.
For somebody who’s only exposure to this series beyond the movies and reading the book with the giant albino alligator that I didn’t know was related until later, it’s fun to hear all about this universe I know nothing about
I grew up with the image of scylla being a mix of dog and spider. That she had a spider like body, with eight dog heads, sitting between the legs (so it's leg, head, leg, head, leg,... all the way around).

Haven't started watching yet, but man am I excited
I think hotel california and the house of the rising sun both match the vibe of what the lotus casino is really well. I don't know if the songs bop enough, but thematically they're perfect.
I think the lady with the heads down there in the books is Kampe. Scylla does have dogs heads in the classical depictions too though
I love how sometimes you find podcasts/videos randomly that bring together creators you like unexpectedly. It's like a pleasant treat
Here is the thing I started reading Percy Jackson with a lot of knowledge on Greek mythology and sure there are inaccuracies but by the gods I love the book series so far it’s funny, it’s entertaining, and I feel like I’m slowly realizing I might have adhd but that’s a problem for another day.
What, Red the Ace Icon herself going for the Hunters of Artemis? This is such a shock. *Surprised Pikachu Face*
OMG PERCY JACKSON I LOVE THIS 💙
Athena is definitely not portrayed in a kind light in the sequel book Mark of Athena
A whole hour of OSP talking about my favorite childhood book series? Nice!
52:00 I reckon if you really want to catch yourself a demigod, then send either Kampê or Orion. One is a super powerful jailer, and the other is one of the greatest hunters in the lore of the books
I got into Percy Jackson because my teacher thought I would love the book. She was correct.
33:09
Them: **talking about how book Athena wasn't that bad**
Me: **laughs in Mark of Athena**
I'm curious now about Red's opinion of Epic: The Musical
WOOOOH we got a lot of people a LONG (ish) episode and it's all about Percy Jackson?
don't mind if I do!!!
I personally find it kind of sad that red specifically didn’t get past years of Olympus because it also means she didn’t read trials of Apollo which I think she would really really like
