    Your video is THE best overview of the superliner trains. I'm taking my granddaughter on her first SWC ride and she wants to see "what it's like." We'll be in a roomette (she's 8) and is wondering what the upper bunk is like. Your video is perfect.

    I did this from New York to Seattle
    The best experience I always brag about.
    I had no showers/bed since I was just an ambitious college student low on budget.
    Dining Car was ridiculously expensive so I only dined once($15 for a small salad? no thank you) but the sunrise/sunset everyday was absolutely amazing.
    I cannot wait to hop on Amtrak again to somewhere new!

    Great video. My wife and I rode the Chief in early December. I haven ridden Amtrak many times, but this was her first overnight train trip. Always a great time when traveling by train. We also got a roomette, and slept very well. Anyone looking to travel via Amtrak, do so. It is a great experience and the best part about traveling by train is meeting so many new people.

    What a great video! I did this route a little over ten years ago as part of a longer trip. I went from Boston to LA to Oakland, I spent some a few days in the Bay Area and then went from Emeryville back to Boston. I highly recommend it! You may want to suggest that sleeper passengers tip the car attendants upon departure ($5-$10 per day aboard) and waitstaff at each meal (even if the price of the food is included).

    very nice ! Amtrak tries their very best to fit a whole lot of stuff into a train so i understand why you & some people would say "theres not alot of space left" that doesent bother me at all. Amtrak is one of the greatest ways to travel. its like a hotel on a train lol very very kool and its an easy way to meet people and start relationships

    This was a great Video Series, to be Frank I'm a Trianiac myself, I logged 2,711 miles on the rails, but sadly only in New York State, But It was Freaking Awesome, I've done two trips to New York on an 8hour shot from WNY. I did a trip to Poughkeepsie once, with my folks which is twelve hours round Trip, the NYC trips equal 23 Hours and just last Summer in 2015, I took Train no. 284 the Empire Service from WNY to The New York State Fair in Syracuse approximately 2hours, 25minutes, which your viewers might wanna know during the NY State Fair in Syracuse, Train no's. 284, #64 The Maple Leaf and Train #288 Eastbound go directly to the fair and Westbound trains no's. #63 The Maple Leaf, #281 and Train #283 the one I took Westbound make a stop at the Fair en-route to WNY. Centro provides shuttles to/from the fair and the shuttles only take approximately 2 to 5 minutes to arrive to/from the fair cause they use Interstate-81, Ironically enough I went to Syracuse to see The National Train Days Exhibit. Man were the Staff soooo friendly manning the event, they practically gave the exhibit away to me, cause they were really happy to see a True Amtrak Fan like me at the Fair, I even stated Amtrak by train is the only way I travel. I also like people like you Kelly Ferro whom take interest in trains like I do, not many people would film a journey on an Amtrak Train, I'm so glad someone like you Kelly Ferro is showing people what a Beautifully, Fantastic & Scenic Voyage riding aboard an Amtrak Train can be. Thank You sooo very much Kelly for showing people what I love about riding via Train, plus people don't think trains are popular anymore?, well when I rode to NYC the 2nd time.... When we reached The Layover Stop at Albany- Rensselaer, NY the conductor announced the Train was SOLD OUT!!!!, if trains weren't popular modes of transportation anymore then How Did Train 280 Sell out?. Guess it was popularity that sold it out. Anyways sorry for rambling, but thank you so very much for brining awareness to the Fact of HOW AWESOME TRAIN TRAVEL IS( All caps are for emphasis, not yelling)- Sincerely Chef Richard Alan Cianciosi.

    I traveled Amtrak several time round trip, from Syracuse to Denver, and from Denver to Seattle. I have to admit, the scenery on the Southwest Chief is rather boring. After it leaves Illinois, it goes through Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, etc. The scenery is quite endless miles of flat prairie lands and nondescript neighborhoods. Central Colorado adds the scenery that was missing from the earlier part of the journey. There is spectacular scenery if you take the route from Denver to Sacramento and from Sacramento to Seattle. However, expect a 9 hour layover in Sacramento, which makes the 6- hour layover in Chicago seem like a cake walk. The roomette is the way to go on long journeys, that's how I roll. I am going to Montana on Amtrak this year, it will be interesting to try that route for the first time.

      Train travel is more expensive than a flight, but when you consider the price of hotels rooms and restaurant dining for the days you are riding on the train, it is about the same. When you fly you miss the countryside, when driving a car you concentrate on the road, but when you are riding on a train you see the countryside.

    The only thing that would make Amtrak any better is if we could bring our dogs! I know that they changed their policy on some lines but only up to 7 hours. Great series! We are traveling in May/June from MN to WA to Vancouver, back through MT and home. 10 days total and we can't wait!!!

    Great video review! I'm planning on riding the Amtrak to Los Angeles in December and i was wanting to know since this we be a 36 hour ride,is there a public shower people can use if they don't have a bedroom? Please let me know ok!

    • @SeaToby11
      @SeaToby11 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sleeper cars have a shower in each of the deluxe bedrooms and a public shower for the roomettes which is shared with the other roomettes. There are no showers in the coach cars, but as noted one could do a sponge bath in one of the public bathrooms. Washcloths and towels are provided in the coach and sleeper cars bath rooms, and if they have run out one can ask the attendant to bring more.

    You need to now do a video from Chicago to Kansas City on to Newton, Kansas. Then connect with the new thurway service from Newton, Wichita on to Oklahoma, City and then connect with the Heartland Flyer to Fort Worth Texas. Here is the Amtrak press release. media.amtrak.com/2016/04/wichita-returns-to-the-amtrak-map/

    • @ericpatterson2791

      +Kelley Ferro Thanks for your reply. Here is a new idea for you. How to travel 4 different Amtrak trains routes starting and ending from one point. I call this Amtrak Donuts Route. With the new route from Newton to OKC one can make a interesting new train trip. Example, start traveling from Albuquerque Amtrak station to Newton, Kansas on the Southwest Chief route. Then transfer from there on the thurway bus to OKC station. Board the Heartland Flyer to Fort Worth, TX station. At Fort Worth take the Texas Eagle to San Antonio, TX. Now that your at San Antonio you can connect with the Sunset Limited travel west to El Paso, TX. At El Paso take the thurway bus back to your starting point at the Amtrak station in Albuquerque. Looking on the Amtrak map it looks like a big Donuts shape route. This route does have lots to see in the middle, lower half of the USA.

    I don't know about the Southwest Chief but on the California Zephyr they practice communal seating. So you will be eating your meal with people you don't know. I don't mind talking to others but I would like to enjoy my meal without having to engage in small talk. They force you to sit with people you don't know and each person is different. They do this at each and every meal. That was the downside of the trip for me. I have been on the Lake Shore Limited and that train was so much better than the Zephyr. Every room has a toilet and a sink. The Zephyr doesn't.

    Just a minor correction. 43 hours is not three days. If one leaves Chicago on the Southwest Chief on a Wednesday afternoon, one would arrive in Los Angeles at around 8 am Friday morning. That is less than two days. Everyone should be glad to know that the tracks on which the Southwest Chief runs have just been repaired and upgraded which allows for the Southwest Chief to return to faster speeds. One can thank the Obama administration for the opportunity for states and federal government to contribute matching funds to upgrade railway tracks on some Amtrak routes.

    I wouldn't call that an "Observatory car" unless they let you sit in it in the middle of the night and have telescopes.

    • @vinnykster
      @vinnykster 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually in fact you can go to the observatory car anytime you want. People even go in there and sleep there at night. Yet another reason why traveling by train is way better than flying which is way more restrictive. On the train you can move around at will. Trains > Planes :-)

    • @lomalandboy
      @lomalandboy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is in fact called the "observation car" not observatory. You may stay there all night if you wish. Some people camp out on the floor and seats overnight.

    • @lorrainenichols650
      @lorrainenichols650 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And the problem with people who go into the observation car and just hang out/sleep is that someone else can't enjoy the view because there is nowhere to sit.
