This is a different plant. We would call them braken here in the west. Fiddle heads have a tan flaky husk when rolled tight and they are not furry or spiny in any way. You have to prepare it properly so the toxins are minimized. There are different methods to accomplish that. Grandma blanched them well today before frying. This is one method and probably the most common here in the west. ☺
Bracken or Sword or fiddler fern.. the young shoots are very good a lot like asparagus.. Washington State USA.. They are just starting to come up now..
We have a very similar fern just called bracken fern in this part of Australia. It grows in areas where grass has trouble growing. Usually very fine sand and places where the ground is covered in wet dead leaves. My grandfather used to burn it hoping to give the grass a chance to grow but it would all come back as fern. The only place that had it and was killed off was an area where the cows kept walking on it.
My favourite veg.... .. how to cook... Blanche in a boiling water for 3 minutes .. drain.. put in a big bowl. Tomatoes onion lime salt pepper mix it done...salad dont overcook.
