Ah yes because when you travel to other countries you usually see the whole country. A explanation on Subdivisions: There are multiple subdivisions of Portugal, but the most important one are what I call "District-Municipality-Parish Hierarchy", which of most importance are the Districts (you should have used that). The one you used are the NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics, yes funny name haha) which is mostly used for statistics and developed by the European Union. Funnily enough, the LAUs (before, NUTS 4/5) are the same in the "DMPH" (that one I nicknamed) after the Districts. There's also a third and fourth way to subdivide. The third one is like, dead? Since the 1st level subdivisions is the same thing that the NUTS 3 and other things are "towns" and "cities", which ARE NOT subdivisions. Meanwhile the 4th one are the Provinces and it was dissolved but it still lives on in the culture and stuff (example: University of the Interior Beira - Interior Beira is a nickname to designate Lower Beira and Upper Beira). There are a BUNCH of other obscure designations and honestly I won't give you the confusion I had when I discovered this rabbit hole of sh*t these are. But it's probable that in the near future (~2030s), the Districts will be dissolved and it will be become like Provinces: Just lives on in the country's culture...

Most of the info here is great, the only aside is that D. Sebastião was never burries in Portugal, he is basically the Portuguese version of the legend that King Arthur will return at Englands time of need, except he was a real king that became king too soon and decided to sail to affrica to fight a war he had no buisness fighting and nobody knows what happened to him, causing Portugal to be left without a king or heir and be taken over by Spain for like 100 years. There is a memorial toumb though, which is what's actually in that church.
FYI, the unemployment rate in Portugal is 5.9%, not 43.6% as you're trying to imply at minute 8:02 ("Portugal has one of the lowest employment rates on the continent, with only 56.1 percent of the population employed) [?!!!!] Secondly, Saint Anthony wasn't baptized in the Lisbon Cathedral (minute 9:02) but in the church across the road, which was named after him. Also this: "Originally introduced by the Arab invaders in the thirteenth century, [...]" (minute 14:10) This is completely incorrect. Portugal exists as an independent nation since the mid-twelfth century, by which time the Moors (whom many of you continue to mistake for Arabs) had been expelled from the territory that was to become Portugal (with the exception of the Algarve which was only freed of their rule in the mid-thirteenth century). In Portugal, the manufacture of decorative tiles only started in the 1500s after the return of King Dom Manuel I, who had been to Seville on a visit to his in-laws, King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabel of Castille, and became fascinated by the tiles that he saw in that city that still retained many of the buildings the Moors left behind. However, tiles only started to be manufactured in large quantities in Portugal from the 1600s onward! And also, contrary to what you've mentioned at minute 15:00, there is no implicit "love for canned fish" Canned fish is only, by and large, eaten as a snack, not as a part of the main meal. Portuguese gastronomy is hugely varied (Pork, Sausages, Lamb, Veal, chicken, shellfish, a great variety of fish, bread, cakes, desserts, fruit, vegetables, etc. Only an extremely ill-informed person would think that the Portuguese only eat sardines on bread all year round.
I'm stupid, I always thought that Lisbon was the center... AFTER ALL LISBON IS LISBON, I WAS RAISED UP THERE, EVER SINCE I WAS 8 YEARS OLD, HOW DID I NOT KNOW
Very nice to see that you liked our country! If you ever think about returning, then next time, come to Porto! It may be a bit smaller, but it's the unofficial second capital of Portugal! Great people, great history, and of course the francesinhas are great! Or Covilhã, the Serra da Estrela usually has snow in the colder seasons, and the cheese from there is definitely the best. Or Algarve, fantastic beaches and usually great weather too, though it can get really hot down there, like 50° or so! Leiria, Batalha, Guimarães, Viseu has nothing, Castelo Branco... I guess Fátima is also decent enough, but for the Sanctuary alone. Just don't fall into the tourist traps, we have too many a those here
We're simple people: We drink Super Bock, eat Bacalhau and watch football. And no matter how the government rapes our bum we only riot if our football(soccerr for US) loses. Low criminality rates since we're poor there's no point robbing and risking jail time (lmao no one actually serves time in jail UNLESS you're really really poor) to get like 50 cents that were going to used in a Tasco to buy a Paralelo(Vinho Verde Branco+ Sparkling Water). So please spend all your money there. Our rich people(0.1% of us) will thank you!
I hope you have really above local average income, a mortgage contracted before the touristic trend for Lisbon because I'd rather them not to come... and i say it politely. I live in the center of Lisbon for almost 30 years and honestly the city became a circus for tourists, tailored made for them and full of policies to attract rich foreign people (golden visa). As a local i don't feel in my own town anymore nor welcomed and even my gf that is not even portuguese had enough. Other expats that came before the 'big discovery' feel the same and are thinking about leaving. Tourism is everywhere, it's normal but here in the last 5 years it's just too much... actually there is practically no more portuguese, local people living in Lisbon, housing is reserved for foreign people with higher income than locals....Sorry, another video to sell Portugal, it's a shame.

It surprises me that many of these Portuguese streets and neighborhoods look a lot like those in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro itself has many identical ones, portuguese architecture is my favourite, it makes me feel at home.
That’s because when the Portuguese king moved to Brazil after Napoleon invaded Portugal, he wanted his new capital to look like Lisbon.
@@liamthomas8029 In fact, it already happened before, but with the arrival of the king, it increased, but a lot in Rio de Janeiro.

A explanation on Subdivisions:
There are multiple subdivisions of Portugal, but the most important one are what I call "District-Municipality-Parish Hierarchy", which of most importance are the Districts (you should have used that).
I visited Lisbon in January, i already miss it so much ❤️
Thanks for the great video. It's been a long time since I subbed when you had 10k subs and now it's 100k+. I'm shocked at how fast the time goes. I learn a lot from your videos and you super deserve the subs. 🇵🇭

4:28 a little fun fact I learned in art history. Did you know that square formatted to resemble more a ancient (Roman like) theater setup? So when people arrive to lisbon they get this almost theatrical vibe when in the square. Like the square is the stage and the city is its background.

As a Portuguese, great video man Lisbon is cool asf but if you really wanna see some beautiful stuff you gotta head to the small villages, they have something about them that make the atmosphere there an experience out of this world, literally indescribable, at least for me
As a Portuguese I can admit we r rlly good at 2 things. Exploring the oceans and making the best egg based desserts ever.
I was born in Lisbon. Me, my brothers and my dad were born there, but my mom was born in Oporto (Porto) so she wanted us to go live there. So we did. I’ve been living here for 7 years now, and this video brings me a lot of nostalgia. Thank you, man.

Im a Brazilian living in Portugal so you don’t have to!
I’m here right now, it’s extremely beautiful, food is amazing and walking around is such a joy
Thank you for visiting our beloved country, I also have to thank you for explaining part of our history!
I know we have great sightseeing all around the country but what Portugal really shines on is the food. Probably some of the best food you've ever eaten as long as you don't go to tourist spots since they twist traditional food to the liking of tourists.
Now you going to Portugal, what you think of cross the Atlantic and come to Brasil some day Janósz??
Ah yes, the epic phrase.
As a Portuguese i might say im impressed for the fact that someone gave importance to our country
As a Portuguese myself I think you nailed the video: very informative and engaging! I must point out though, the title is a bit misleading 😅 and over here we kinda bicker with each other, because to outsiders Portugal is ONLY Lisbon, and that’s so far from the true (as you point out in the video as well). You know, not something you have to be sensitive about, but just some FYI 😅 And while Lisbon IS a beautiful city, if you do come back to Portugal I do recommend checking other places, like Porto, Aveiro, Faro/Portimão, and the Madeira/Azores islands!
As a Portuguese person i have to say this is some exelent mix between memes and culture. Btw this video was only for lisbon imagine the rest of the country. Just subscribed.

Your accent is great, and I'm happy for this video to be out! After being told my accent in Polish sounds great for someone that doesn't even know the alphabet in it properly, it seems we share some pronunciation. I've had this happen with Greek as well, but I'm Spanish, so that was to be expected (I swear this makes sense).
Yes you are good, maybe too good. You should be less worried about the Kosovo Mafia and more worried about Rick Steves. He does not like competition, and he sees all, has a long reach and never sleeps.

FYI, the unemployment rate in Portugal is 5.9%, not 43.6% as you're trying to imply
at minute 8:02 ("Portugal has one of the lowest employment rates on the continent, with only 56.1 percent of the population employed) [?!!!!]
Secondly, Saint Anthony wasn't baptized in the Lisbon Cathedral (minute 9:02) but in the church across the road, which was named after him.
Also this:
"Originally introduced by the Arab invaders in the thirteenth century, [...]" (minute 14:10)
This is completely incorrect.
Only an extremely ill-informed person would think that the Portuguese only eat sardines on bread all year round.
love from the Azores and Portugal to Srbjia

@User 15 nós não dizemos isso.
