One correction to this story. The two bridges are from a structure standpoint sound, but functionally obsolete. They are not falling apart but need to be replaced.

It's only a matter of time where it will start falling apart.

Being a Plymouth resident, I want the new bridges to keep the traditional look of the famous bridges...no Zakem designers please n thank you.

They are too narrow and cause traffic bottlenecks. It's unfortunate, but they need to go. Functionality is more important than aesthetics at this point.

I'm originally from the Cape and lived in Sagamore in 1984/85 in the apartments down behind the Christmas Tree Shops and remember the Sagamore bridge well. The Bourne and Sagamore bridges have some cool history especially the Sagamore, as when it was built a bridge worker fell into the concrete and died and if I remember right, there's a marker placed on the off-Cape side of the bridge to the right for that worker. I know these two iconic bridges served the Cape well over the years and need to be replaced, but too bad Mass DOT couldn't design and build a modern-day version of the Bourne and Sagamore that give a nod to these two bridges but built to meet the needs of The Cape for many years to come.

it took roughly 2 years to complete the sagamore and bourne bridge back in 35. How much you want a bet it will take at least 5 years to make a far less advanced bridge today? I remember when they were doing repairs on a tiny existing bridge in buzzards bay that took 5 years to finish. Its laughable to think they will get a massive project done in any reasonable time. Traffic is about to get insane

I’d bet $5k they will finish the first bridge in less than 5 years after breaking ground. The old bridges won’t shut down until their respective replacements go operational. The bridges will 100% be more advanced in every aspect when compared to bridges that were built in the 1930s. Mankind has seen significant advances in engineering and construction techniques since then.

They should put up tolls on these new bridges. That will keep a lot of the riff raff out.

It'll put a daily financial burden on residents who commute, Mr. Snobb. In which case we need to keep one "old bridge" as a "back road"...that Plymouth, Wareham and CC residents can scan their license and pass for free.

What ever it is it will be twice the cost and twice as long to build.

Get rid of your Liberal, immigrant loving Governor Healey, and you might just get a bridge, but continue to protect the Illegal Immigrants, give nothing back to the Bostonians get nothing.

These ideas are terrible because they dont actually increase capacity or allow for future lane additions. Hey MDOT, another lane from hingham thru suicide alley would have a massive net societal benefit. When these orig bridges were built they were done with future in mind. Cc had 30k people now theres 200k and were gonna put the same number of traffic lanes. Cmon wake up.

Don't design the bridge please. Just come up with a budget

  • @shelbycutting6066

Functionally obsolete, structurally sound. Too many cars crossing that bridge now a days. Hopefully they won’t keep that 3rd deign. Yuck.
