PSA: PLEASE stop asking why Gary's a cat, lmao. Why are they humans living underwater? Why are they humans named SpongeBob and Squidward? IT'S AN AU. I know that Gary's a snail in the musical, but in my interpretation, he's a cat. Read some of the facts below for more information on this.

Remember about a week or 2 ago, in the description for the WIP, I said I wasn’t sure if I was gonna finish this? hAH.

-watch this a few times and look at different characters each time because I PUT TOO MUCH WORK INTO THINGS, NEEDLESSLY
-i worked on this on-and-off for a few months, stopped, then came back to it
-you can actually tell when I came back to it cause the art quality has changed, however slightly (started again at Pat singing “my favorite rock”)
-at first I was afraid to draw the characters really cartoony and deviate from my style comfort zone (you can tell from SB’s early profiles) but I threw those precautions out the window when I picked this back up and I’m actually pretty proud of it! (try new things, kids)
-i intended for this to be like a complete human AU (hence Gary the Cat and the jellyfish butterflies when sb leaves his house) but then I said f it and drew some mf clams as bg vocalists
--but i will continue to draw Gary as a poorly-drawn cat uNTIL THE DAY I DIE
-kinda upset with how I drew Patrick, couldn’t really get him right (i promise to do him justice later on down the road)
-sandy is probably the least recognizable but that’s because I kinda wanted to make her look a little more like her cartoon design (buns as ears, gap in teeth, wearing a bikini under her suit) but I plan on having her appear closer to her musical design down the road. But for now, think of her as having two outfits, the one for her treedome (which is just her hair in buns and her jumpsuit tied around her waist) and her jumpsuit on (afro and all)
-i went overboard with sandy’s part and then, like an idiot, was like “gUEsS i gOTtA DO thAt foR EVerYONE noW”
-SORRY FOR KRABS' WALKING LMAO
--also he looks like a bearded danny phantom lol

-----just a lotta Ls were taken with Krabs, okay??
-some bg fish from the musical are featured, can you spot them all?
-i know that, like, the line-thickness for krabs and pearl change in the middle of their scene. I was too lazy to fix it when I first noticed it so I vowed to do it later, but here we are
-the part where the blob-crowd bursts thru the door simultaneously cracks me up and makes me cringe, but I had to pick my drawing battles and I was willing to lose that one to save me some time (rip)
-i spent way too long on frames that are shown for like, half a second, and will probably continue to do so because, as stated previously, I’m an idiot
-total frames (including title and credits but not the repetition of the same frames): 362

I use backgrounds from the actual cartoon as I’m an amateur artist and I struggle with bgs a lot. I do try to add some subtle differences, but the bgs are not completely original nor do I claim them to be!
Character designs are inspired by the cartoon (Nickelodeon and my guy Stephen Hillenburg) and the musical (Chicago and Broadway performances)

Ehhh, I guess people just weren't expecting it? To my knowledge, no one had made him a cat before. I think people were just expecting like a true to form animatic, where it's an exact copy of the opening number from the stage production, but I've never advertised it as such? You can tell by my character designs that I'm not completely copying from the musical. If I did everything as it appeared in the musical, I don't think these animatic would be worth doing. I think having a bit of originality in animatics adds to the experience of creating and watching one. But that's just my opinion. **sips tea**

Chara Dreemurr I agree! SpongeBob and Patrick are too childish together for a romance and Squidward hates him, but Sandy adores him and he adores her!
It does not matter that she is stronger or smarter than him, he still loves her as this scawny and naive guy. It is so sweet and they are both fun, hardworking, adventurous, loving and loyal. Sorry, but powerhouse Sandy deserves our softy, SpongeBob, more than the other characters. This karate loving duo is just too perfect!
I will defend this ship until the day I die. Sandy/SpongeBob was my first ship and it will always be special to me.

Cat!Gary seems so fitting for the fact that they’re humans, because you usually see humans having a pet cat and a really big bond to them, I love the way Patrick looks!! This is too underrated!
And I mean. Snails are the sea creature equivalent of cats!

I honestly like how they made Gary a cat. That's basically what Nickelodeon has been hinting at during the entire duration of the show. It's basically just a Bikini Bottom cat! Why else would it meow? I mean, it's not like he's a parrot!

Haha, thank you! I was inspired by the actual musical for that bit! During Krab's and Plankton's bit, their background lights are red and green and I thought it'd be an interesting way to give each character their moment.

Wow, I'm honored! This is my first time doing something like this, but I've been doing small little animations since I was a kid. And my advice if you want it, practice, practice, practice! Draw whenever you can, doesn't always have to be something big, it can be doodles. And drawing fanart and your interpretation of a certain TV show or movie you like is a good way to make your style more diverse, because then you'll incorporate those style quirks into your own until you have something that's distinctly you! Digital arts and animation is a lot of fun - and work - but the more you do it, the more you learn and the more confident you become.
wannabe-cartoonist Thanks for the advice! I'm working on a FNAF: SL animatic as well as a Gravity Falls/Greatest Showman animatic (which I've uploaded a piece of). I've been drawing fanart for forever, and I'm happy that now it's digital.

Thanks!! But I actually consider what I do drawing weird little characters too. Though it's cliche, I can say that if you practice, practice, PRACTICE, you'll find yourself doing stuff that you're pretty confident and happy with! Doing all the drawings for this really helped me improve, I feel, so I can't recommend more just drawing whenever you can, even if it's not big elaborate drawings and just doodles in your notebook. :)
@@wannabecartoonist 2021 and you're right, I can finally draw headshape, hands, expression, poses and styles that is anime, my styles and some other cartoon/anime styles like in anime "You're lie in April", "Danganronpa" and "My Hero Academia" style and some cartoon styles like "Animaniacs reboot"

And as someone who has gotten the amazing privileged of seeing the show in person twice, it's a spectacular experience and seems like a lot of fun to work on.
Doing animatics and animations with SpongeBob seemed like an inevitable path to follow seeing as I grew up on the show and he's basically been my major role model in life, lol. So when the musical came along, I jumped at the chance to show my love for this show/production.

That's awesome! SpongeBob was a huge part of my childhood too, and getting to play such an iconic character would be a privilege honestly! I'm in another really great musical rn though so I can hardly complain, but I'm definitely gonna keep my eye out for productions once the licensing rights for this show goes out haha!
I definitely wanna try to go to NY this summer to see SpongeBob, DEH, and possibly the Off-Broadway premier of the show I'm currently doing because that'd be such a dream come true!

I love that you made Spongebob wearing pajamas at the start, because, in the show, Spongebob *rarely* wears PJs when he sleeps, usually preferring to sleep in his underpants, which would have been *extremely awkward* if you did that.

Thank you! Changing from location to location helped to make it feel like I was keeping things fresh and made drawing it all seem a little easier. Almost like breaking it into "scenes" and drawing one segment at a time to not get overwhelmed. :)
