Aawww I’ve been wanting a white farmhouse front apron sink forever 😥 but I didn’t know it would scratch or crack around the drain and rust ... bummer 🥺 . I also didn’t know that I needed this video 🤭 , thank you for sharing.
Then I’ve got good news 😃. That’s only true if the sink you’re looking at is cast-iron. You can still have your sink if it’s fireclay. Fireclay doesn’t chip or rust the way porcelain enamel cast-iron does. So go get that farmhouse sink.
Anyone who owns a short apron farmhouse cast iron or a fireclay sink? What are your thoughts vs one or the other in your experiences and what brands? Thanks in advance.

I bought composite granite sink for my kitchen remodel about 8 years ago. It was brown in color. After some time I started to notice a whiteish haze on the sink. Now we do live in a house which uses a water softener. But the discoloration of that sink does not make the statement that I wanted. I have not found anything to clean it long term. You can rub oil on it and it does mask the problem for a short period of time. I’ve had stainless before I didn’t like the drum sound even with a high quality insulated model. So at this point if I had it to do again I guess I would go with something that can be cleaned like porcelain, but colored.

We are looking for a double bowl, porcelain sink with an integrated drainboard. We're having such a difficult time! The reason we want this is two fold: it's very handy and it is aesthetically appropriate for our 1947 kitchen. The fireclay sounds like it might be a good choice, but I DON'T like the apron front style. If you have any tips on where to look (we're in Oregon) I would love to hear it. Very informative video, by the way :-)
First you’re very welcome I’m happy to help. However as I’m sure you’ve discovered there is a lack of availability when it comes to this kind of thing in cast-iron or fire clay. Kohler and CECO sinks are the only two companies left in the cast-iron game. The truth is the bowl orientation that you’re looking for is most likely going to be found in copper, stainless steel, or composite granite. There is another option however you can have a drainboard molded into your countertop if you use some sort of a man-made thing like a Corian or a concrete countertop.

Very helpful. A general discussion about price comparison, not even amounts, would have been very, very helpful❗ We all know there are tradeoffs, but I don't know how much the cost difference is of one over the other. Is it a 10% difference? 30%? 50%? That info can be equally as important to a budget! Also, which of the options add the most cost? Is it the mount style? Or the sink style? Or the hardware? Where are you going to spend crazy amounts of money if you aren't care?
Question! Which sink mount would you recommend to someone with a bad mold allergy? I imagine most people apply sealer to the sink so water doesn't get into the cabinets drawers below, or is this a matter of avoiding wood cabinets altogether with any sink?
Good video! Thanks.... One of my concerns is the reveal. Sinks with rounded edges are going to have a big, angled space that collects scum, especially if you don't have a positive reveal. It seems like a S.S. sink with an extremely flat surface would provide the most attractive and functional seal regardless of if you had a positive or neutral reveal. I want the smooth attractive reveal, but I don't want a S.S. sink. I'm probably going to roll the dice and go with a Fireclay undermount.
Nice information, this I should have known two years ago, I had a black 'composite' sink I thought looked like 1.000$ then I remodeled my kitchen and bought the cheapest sink I found, in stainless steel, and kind of regret a little, because, just like he say, I must clean it all the time, what would be interesting is the possibilities to replace the sink and/or paint it or something, do not think that is possible but....
Unfortunately right now I am not aware of a way to paint stainless and keep the finish consistent. Perhaps heat tempering? But that’s not something you would do at home.
@@RemodelMedia - actually, funny enough, I have a tip to you, some half a year ago I was in a shop selling paint etc and was talking to one of the employees, complaining about my stainless steel sink, and she suggested something meant for cars I think, at least, she walked me to the car department, found a tube with "autosol" metal polish, which was hell to work with, but the result is very good, still nice after months, next time I polish I will use a machine I think, now the sink look much better and very easy to clean
I am looking into a Workstation kitchen sink and would like to know which company makes the best one with all the bells and whistle Thank You in advance Great fantastic information
He did not talk about maintenenceof the composite. That is the one thing I was interested in finding out. I had a composite granite sink. It was beautiful but would easily get water stains and a dingy look. Very pretty when new or freshly iled but usually looked dirty even when it was clean. I was wondering if they have improved in the last several years.
Hi Dave, thanks for this video. It is the most comprehensive video I've seen on the subject. I need direction on removing and replacing a sink. Help. It was suggested to replace with a similar size and shape which is fine, if I can find one in stainless steel. The problem is this man made material, was made in an shape and I'm stuck. Any suggestions?
I could almost make this an episode of Quick Tip Tuesday. In fact I might. The short answer is you MIGHT be stuck. Rectangles are generally easier shapes to match than others. Do you happen to know the make and model of the original sink? I could answer the question. You should also keep in mind that you are going from a thicker material (composite material / composite stone) to a thinner material (stainless) which will throw off your measurements slightly as well. If you don't know the make/model send me a photo on Twitter/Instagram @remodelmedia or email info@remodelmedia.tv and I'll see if I can help you. Thanks for watching and make sure you're subscribed so you never miss an episode.

Thanks for all of this useful information. What is the ideal depth of a sink so as not to cause back strain from leaning over. Is there a formula for how tall a person is to how deep the sink should be? One reason I prefer a divided sink is because I can rest a pan on the center portion while scrubbing. Also, what about the faucet and how high or low should it be so as not to cause so much splashing? Maybe I’m overthinking this! Thanks!
@@RemodelMedia hello! This video helped me so much. I do have a question. I do care about what my sink looks like so I am leaning more towards the granite sinks. Do these sinks scratch, rust, or leave water marks? Everything in my kitchen will be stainless steel but I don’t want to deal with the ugly scratches that comes with it and the maintenance.
Awesome video I'm just seeing now! Thank you! Question, any reason why the negative reveal in the kitchen is "unusual"and usually in the bathroom? Are they less sanitary or anything?
That’s a great question. Thank you for asking. The short answer is they’re very resistant. They’re the same material all the way through. They’re baked to a much higher temperature than cast-iron. Here’s a little demonstration for you. vm.tiktok.com/J8A7a84/
@@RemodelMedia Thank you! That makes my decision much easier! I love the look of those apron front fireclay's, but didn't know if I was trading good looks for wimpy material.... looks strong enough to me!!! You're very helpful, much appreciated!
Fireclay is very durable and not likely to scratch. Porcelain enameled cast iron might not scratch but it can chip. If you do get porcelain enameled cast iron make sure to get Kohler as they have a limited lifetime warranty.
Hello thank you for this informative video. My question looking for a double sink with sliding drainboard with a deep right side sink for my kitchen? I grew up with the farmers sink and later saw this in stainless steel. Where can I find this.
I have a double-bowl apron front fireclay sink 36" wide from IKEA and really like it. Less expensive than other brands. It fits a special IKEA base with fronts that work for the apron front design.
Regret. Allowed contractor to put a 7 inch shallow double sink. After 7 years of a splashed countertop, My wife now wants a deeper single sink. Undermount sink in granite countertop. Installer, who did a great job, strongly discouraged her from making the change. He stated the size has to be exactly the same, since the countertop is granite. Our previous house we had a deep composite and loved it. Warn to state that the contractor said that the plumbing setup, kitchen on slab, precluded a deeper sink. I wish we installed an over the counter drop in. What are your thoughts with people having granite countertops?
That was fantastic thanks. I’m not sure anyone makes the kind of sink I want. Small bowl not stainless steel, not liable to cracking, not under hanging. I would like one that overlaps the kitchen counter so no mucky bits accumulate, with an integral splash back. I’m in France if anyone knows if this even exists. The current sink is tiny and I’d like a tiny one to replace it. Thanks anyway for a great video so informative.
If you’re flexible on discussing stainless steel, there is a company called Julien in Canada 🇨🇦 that will make pretty much anything you can draw. They’re not super cheap but it might be work a look. www.julien.ca
I would've liked more info about the composite sinks. For the others, you mentioned whether they stain, chip, scratch, how hard it is to clean them, etc. Nothing on the composites.
What about actual real granite sinks carved out of a solid block of granite? One manufacture said it had to be sealed before each use for optimal performance, what are they trying to say to get out of warranting the product? We are looking for an apron sink with a natural carved rock look on the front face.
Awesome video. I think I'll go with fireclay. I like the look of the gloss, and the fact that it's one material all the way thru. One question, how would it hold up to cast iron skillets?
It's incredibly durable. Obviously if you hit anything hard enough with a cast iron skillet it will break, however you'd litterally have to swing it like Rapunzel in Tangled to make an impact. Just moving it around and casually bumping you'll be fine.
Thank you for a great video. I am replacing my kitchen sink. How do you measure to fit existing cabinet? What measurements are needed to replace a with a new sink? Thank you.

I want the smooth attractive reveal, but I don't want a S.S. sink.
I'm probably going to roll the dice and go with a Fireclay undermount.
Thanks much. This was helpful. I didn't know sinks had so much going on!
Thank you. I prefer stainless one bowl style.
You’re very welcome. As long as you know all the pros and cons of the material and are making an informed decision, that’s all that matters. 😃
Thanks Dave! I have been looking for this type of information. Very appreciate your knowledge and share,
He did not talk about maintenenceof the composite. That is the one thing I was interested in finding out. I had a composite granite sink. It was beautiful but would easily get water stains and a dingy look. Very pretty when new or freshly iled but usually looked dirty even when it was clean. I was wondering if they have improved in the last several years.

Absolutely excellent info! Thank you very much!
What is the make and model name of the crazy Ferris wheel looking faucet behind you on the last sink?!

Thanks for watching! I’m happy to help. Don’t forget to subscribe so you never miss the latest episode! What kind of sink do you have? What kind are you thinking about putting in?
Thanks for all of this useful information. What is the ideal depth of a sink so as not to cause back strain from leaning over. Is there a formula for how tall a person is to how deep the sink should be? One reason I prefer a divided sink is because I can rest a pan on the center portion while scrubbing. Also, what about the faucet and how high or low should it be so as not to cause so much splashing? Maybe I’m overthinking this! Thanks!
So many sinks are too deep to be comfortably used, yet vendors act like extra depth is a premium feature.
Very practical info clearly explained. Thankyou!
Thank you, Dave....you have been VERY helpful.. 👍👍. 🍺
You’re very welcome. Happy to help. 😃
@@RemodelMedia hello! This video helped me so much. I do have a question. I do care about what my sink looks like so I am leaning more towards the granite sinks. Do these sinks scratch, rust, or leave water marks? Everything in my kitchen will be stainless steel but I don’t want to deal with the ugly scratches that comes with it and the maintenance.
very nice video david please post more big sink fan here!!
Which is quietest. Stainless is noisier than enameled. But not sure about the stone composites

Great Video! So helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video I'm just seeing now! Thank you!
Question, any reason why the negative reveal in the kitchen is "unusual"and usually in the bathroom? Are they less sanitary or anything?
I learned a lot, thank you! Question: how impact resistant are those fireclay sinks?
That’s a great question. Thank you for asking. The short answer is they’re very resistant. They’re the same material all the way through. They’re baked to a much higher temperature than cast-iron. Here’s a little demonstration for you. vm.tiktok.com/J8A7a84/
@@RemodelMedia Thank you! That makes my decision much easier! I love the look of those apron front fireclay's, but didn't know if I was trading good looks for wimpy material.... looks strong enough to me!!! You're very helpful, much appreciated!

Thank you so much 😊. This made my morning.
May I ask what store you are doing this in? I would love to go there.

Hi Dave was an excellent video. I am about to buy ceramic sink as I like the way it looks but I am confused as it could scratch easily so any idea
Fireclay is very durable and not likely to scratch. Porcelain enameled cast iron might not scratch but it can chip. If you do get porcelain enameled cast iron make sure to get Kohler as they have a limited lifetime warranty.
@@RemodelMedia Thank you for the reply I am nt sure if they sell Fireclay in Ireland but I will search
Thanks Bunches ! Very Informative

Thank you for this video!! Sorry I was late. I got stuck in traffic.
Hello thank you for this informative video. My question looking for a double sink with sliding drainboard with a deep right side sink for my kitchen? I grew up with the farmers sink and later saw this in stainless steel. Where can I find this.
“...I wanna put my dishes in it” had me laughing 😂
Thanks 😊
Thank you so much! So glad for this information as I'm just deciding on a sink for my remodel. Very helpful information.
What brand name do you recommend for fireclay sink for 33" double Basin or 36" double basin. Thank you for the great information.
That was very helpful, thank you!
Thanks buddy. I’m happy to help. Make sure you subscribe so you never miss an episode because I’ve got all kinds of helpful hints.
@@RemodelMedia Thank you I’ll take a look. :-)
Very informative and interesting.
Big 👍🏻........Thank you!
You’re welcome
I would've liked more info about the composite sinks. For the others, you mentioned whether they stain, chip, scratch, how hard it is to clean them, etc. Nothing on the composites.
Can I have a fireclay sink with Formica counter tops?
It took a while but here are some things to consider. Thanks for the question. m.th-cam.com/video/_-pA0WTlFGI/w-d-xo.html
Thank you, I found this helpful
And before I forget - thanks for watching.
Awesome! Thanks for the reply!

Does the way of installing a sink, be it undermount or another way, affect possible leaking inside the cabinets in the future? Is there a superior way if installing a sink to prevent future leakage?
Very helpful with humor.
Thank you 😊
I like your sense of humor..😃😃😃

Hi Dave. Thank you so much for this. I would like to replace my existing 1.5 sink bowl with a multifunctional sink which appears to be in trend these days. But my sink is 1000*500mm and the multifunctional function sink is 890*450. What can I do to cover the gap or would it be bad idea to change the sink. I do not wish to change the countertop. TIA
