    Its the visual storytelling by Spielberg to keep them separated throughout the song...always a barrier in their way of love... mirroring their situation. Brilliant.

    I've seen the West Side Story remake. I love West Side Story. I love the 1961 movie. I LOVED the 2019/2020 revival and saw it about a dozen times. But the 2021 remake of West Side Story is the best presentation of the material that has yet to arise. It is transcendent and improves on the story/script in a TREMENDOUS way. It might be the greatest movie musical ever made and I'm the harshest critic I know. Anyone who refuses to like the 2021 film is doing so out of stubborn determination.

    Like someone else said, the "barrier" metaphor is great in the new version, plus, although both versions are romantic, the new one feels more like the excitement and butterflies when you FIRST fall in love, which is what this song is all about. 🥰 It's also more youthful and playful.

    • @Rosannasfriend

      I think the way they’re chilling out on the balcony in the 1961 version is more useful. There’s just too much movement going on in the new one for me.

    The remake is better than the original in my opinion for two things.
    The way the scene was directed with Tony under and maria over, and their beautiful voices.

      But the dancing was a billion times better in the original. I was very disappointed in "Cool" in the Spielberg version. I prefer the original overall.

    Everyone realizes that both Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood were dubbed, right? They even dubbed Rita Moreno in the 1961 version. No one is dubbed in the new movie.

    • @mckeldin1961
      @mckeldin1961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They dubbed Moreno for "A Boy Like That" (Betty Wand); and I've heard unsubstantiated reports that Marni Nixon dubbed not only Wood, but also Moreno in the "Quintet." But I believe it is Moreno's own voice heard in "America." One of the weirdest dubbing decisions was to have Tucker Smith (Ice) dub Russ Tamblyn for "Jet Song" while Tamblyn does his own singing in "Krupke" (and presumably the "Quintet"). Ultimately though, the finished product is the important thing... and the dubbing in the original West Side was done extremely well ... with only Betty Wand standing out as not a particularly good match in vocal timbre. I'm very much looking forward to the new movie (I think it's going to be a real winner!), but I'm less concerned about the actors doing their own singing than I am in the final result.

    • @jenniferwise8515
      @jenniferwise8515 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And in the 1961 version Riff was dubbed singing by Tucker Smith, who played ICE.

      @@jenniferwise8515 Just for the Jet Song. Russ did his own singing for the rest of the movie. I saw the video of Russ singing the Jet Song and the reason he was dubbed was because when he pulled himself up on that high bar to sit he made a very slight grunting sound as he was straining to pull himself up. It seemed very natural and normal. His singing was great. They should have left it in. In fact Tucker and Russ' voice sounded almost alike.

      The separation between María and Tony in the remake is more symbolic, emphasising the divide between them because of their backgrounds and possibly foreshadowing the end of the film.

      @@donnalombardo1135 She was all but divorced from Robert Wagner when this movie was made. Natalie had a mad crush on Jerry Robbins, the other director on the film and the director of the original stage musical. He was gay, well possibly bisexual. Not sure if it was unrequited or not. I don't believe they were ever involved. Natalie just hated Richard Beymer, he was miscast and was a terrible Tony. It is too bad Larry Kert was too old for the part. He was and still is the best actor/singer to play the role. Chita Rivera is still the best Anita. I do think Rachel sings beautifully though and looks right for Maria. Ansel seems okay, his voice isn't as strong though.

    • @theassortedhobbyist
      @theassortedhobbyist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think it gives each actor a good balance of lines to sing in the song and when they to sing together, the emotional resonance becomes much stronger. The original 1957 production only had Maria sing that part, as well as "Today, all day I had a feeling a miracle would happen. I know now I was right". Later productions give that part to Tony and I think the 1961 movie is the only version of "Tonight" I have seen so far where they both sing that portion of the song.

    • @charlesbutcher04
      @charlesbutcher04 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The remake is based on the original Broadway musical and in the original Tony sings that part alone, they just turned it into a duet in the 1961 adaptation

There was a huge issue where Wood would go in, sing the songs, and not know that Marni was going to be dubbing everything. Wood wouldn't even speak to Marni who had a much better working relationship with Hepburn and Kerr when she dubbed them in My Fair Lady and The King & I respectively.
