  • Erich Hoepner was born on the 14th of September 1886 in Frankfurt an der Oder, then part of the German Empire.
When the First World War broke out on 28 July 1914, he was deployed to the Western Front as a company commander and staff officer. Hoepner was promoted to Captain of Cavalry and by the time the war ended on 11 November 1918, he was decorated several times, including the Iron Cross First and Second Class.
Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party came into power in 1933.

I have to disagree. he cared for his men, hated Hitler, was never a Nazi and was decent to prisoners and civilians. Its a difficult one, whilst I may not shed a tear i would not class him in the same category as the rest of the degenerates we usually learn of.

      Micropops,
the Eastern front was a wholely different war where no-holds-barred rules
      did apply :
      ‘dolf’s directives
      that vulturetail
      Awfoul-Joe’s directives.
General Hoepner, given his hatred of the ss & gestapo in his own country must have found the nkvd political kommissars
of exactly the same ilk, & more than heartily carried out his orders.

So many unfortunate errors in this doco, and important material left out. For example, in 1938 he was Claus von Stauffenberg’s commanding officer, and knew him well. Hoepner was designated head of the Home Army while the coup was in progress, to replace the uncooperative General Fromm. Hoepner was not arrested at his home, but at Home Army headquarters - the Bendlerblock. No piano wire was used, nor was this term used. It is the result of a mistranslation. Witnesses state that in most cases death came quickly. Hoepner was a longstanding opponent of the Nazis, and many mourned his death.

Do not insult Finns, they went to Germany, only to fight Russians, and that was because not a single nation, provided Finland with weapons, just as today, with Ukraine!

5:58 I'd like to see the evidence behind this POW mismanagement after Dunkirk.
For as far as I've read and heard, the German army (disregarding the SS) were very respectful and professional to captured western allied POWs since all sides were signatories of the Geneva Accords.
I know the Germans rendered aid as best as they could considering their overstretched logistical situation.
Not so much to the French colonial troops, but I wouldn't consider them "large numbers", for as tragic as their treatment was.

I have mixed feelings about many of the July plotters. I have nothing but admiration for those who tried to stop Hitler from the very beginning of hic Chancellorship, and the religious circles who spoke out against him from the beginning. But it seems like there were some who turned to the anti-Hitler brigade only once it was clear Germany was losing the war. I might put Hoepner in that category...

He was a general in the army and obliged to carry out his orders within the framework of the Geneva Convention. His murder of Commissars indicates he had a dislike of communism and Judaism. Collaboration in crimes against humanity were obfuscated by who the perpetrators were. It was obvious he had a military attitude and approved of war for war’s sake because it would make Germany greater. However he sowed the seed and reaped the whirlwind that the Russian response was to occupation and operation Barbarossa.
