    Dr Walton and Michael Heiser are Key to understanding ANE. What a great gift YHWH has given us in their works.

      Michael Heiser?? Certainly not. New Age false teacher. He's not even a Christian, just an "apocryphal researcher".

      @@samphonnetgamgee5625 I know Heiser's work very well and can honestly say that he is certainly not a "New Age false teacher". Calling him an "apocryphal researcher" might not be too wrong since he does focus a lot on the writings of second temple Judaism and how these writings influenced the authors of the New Testament. But that doesn't make him a heretic. Most biblical scholars (if not all) acknowledge the fact that the New Testament authors also made use of the non-canonical Jewish writings of the time.

    OK that's nice, but everyone just sees the tower. Read Genesis again, they were quite clear that they wanted to build the city with a tower to make a name for themselves *so they would not be scattered*. This is because God had *commanded* them to spread out and fill the earth, copying the command to Adam. They didn't want to scatter, so God scrambled their language, and they scattered.

    The ziggurat was not built for that reason. They were built because of the fear of the return of Noah’s flood.
    The reason they wanted to build the Tower of Babel was so they wouldn’t scatter

    • @kevinsheridan2324
      @kevinsheridan2324 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uh I don’t know maybe it extremely difficult to build a ziggurat in the Ararat mountains?

    • @kevinsheridan2324
      @kevinsheridan2324 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t necessarily disagree with you. I would be more dogmatic when it comes to “scattered” As being the main reason because that is in scripture. It is non-inspired writers like Josephus that points out the fear of potential floodwaters

    • @kevinsheridan2324

      Open that God will come down that is my biggest problem I don’t see that in scripture

    • @deirdrecline8382
      @deirdrecline8382 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      None of your guesses are supported by the 9 verses given. The known purpose for building a ziggurat is to get the god to come down. You read into it about their fear of another flood, which God said he wouldn't do. If you are a scholar of ANE perhaps you should know that.

    This is a dangerous statement and territory to enter into:
    Quoting 2nd line of text in video description:
    *" You’ve heard many Bible stories hundreds of times, but how many behind-the-scenes details are you missing? "*
    By that you can only mean going outside of scripture. There is nothing wrong with this as long as it is in alignment with scripture WITHOUT PRIVATE INTERPRETATION. There can be no contradictions elsewhere as a result. Otherwise your teaching scripture not from scripture but from outside and your seeking outside understanding that your itching ears want to hear rather then what the scriptures provided to use for the plain meaning and understanding. Scripture interprets scripture. This is extremely dangerous territory starting with an extremely dangerous statement to begin with. I am require to warn.

  • @thepolingclan

    I disagree with this. The Tower of Babel can only be understood in light of the one who built it. When we examine the text we discover four things about the man who built The Tower.
    First, we know that Babel and the tower were built by a rebellious man. The definition of Nimrod is “to rebel.” This is not a man who seeks Yahweh’s presence. He is a rebel.
    Second, we know that Nimrod became “mighty over earth.” He ruled humanity and thus did not want people leaving his kingdom. He wanted them under his thumb.
    Third, we know that Nimrod was hostile toward Yahweh. He was a mighty hunter “before,” or “in the face of” or “in opposition to” or “hostile toward” Yahweh.
    He most certainly did not build this ziggurat in hopes of getting closer to Yahweh.
    Fourth, we know that they sought to make for “themselves a name.” They didn’t want Yahweh exalted. They wanted themselves exalted.
    That’s my 2 cents anyway. Take it for what it’s worth. This and a $5 will get you a cup of coffee.

    It's from Zondervan...so of course it's a commercial for their Bible. Walton's info is confirmed by other scholars; it adds more ideas from the ANE to the text. Isn't it interesting the ziggurats are found across the World?

    You need a lesson in atmospheric sciences. There is something called plasma tubes that surround the planet. They are at an elevation of 50 miles currently. Oxygen is magnetic hence aquifer systems producing magnetic fields. Every so often the planet floods by a collapsing of the atmosphere. This brings the ionosphere closer to the planet surface.Thousands of years ago that would’ve brought the plasma tubes within tower distance. This is backed by atmospheric sciences and electromagnetism

      _The author is unknown although it is assumed by academics that the author was an Orthodox Jew based off the fact that the work shows influence from the Talmud, Rashi's commentary, Pirke de Rabbi Eliezer; the Yalkut; the Chronicle of Moses; Yosippon; Midrash Abkir and also the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible)._ [Wikisource]
      Hopefully you (anyone) don't need an explanation of the above paragraph. The answer(s) are contained w/in it. You should not object unless you're an Orthodox Jew who relies ONLY on the Talmud for interpretation(s).

    Interesting theory. Problem is it conflicts with what God says in Gen 11. They were putting themselves above God. Gen 9:1 God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. They were saying "No! Let us make a name for ourselves (not for God or His glory), otherwise we will be scattered abroad." In essence we want the glory, don't want to give it to God, and don't want to obey Him. Apparently, Dr. Walton is another liberal theologian who doesn't care what God's word says. I hope I'm wrong.

    I find it quite interesting that the Tower of Babel was apparently built "next to" or close by the existing Jewish Temple at that time. To me that shows how Nimrod and his disobedient followers were trying to set up a counterfit way of approaching God rather than in the manor that he had commanded them to. That way was through his Temple and the sacrificial offerings performed there by people with the recognized Priesthood authority to do so. As with Cains offering, Satan always trys to get people to disobey God by convincing them to do things their way and for their benefit rather than Gods.
