    a solution i have used before for seeing inside stations with canopy's is to decrease the light in the main room and increase the light in the station. great work as always.

    Yes, I worried about the smoke from all four of the Battersea chimneys also . . but it is your world, and if in your world all the chimneys work . . so what! What a stunning job you are doing!

      We had to add the 4th turbine to cover the power consumption on McKinley. I can't help it if the British Electricity Authority planners couldn't have foreseen my needs back in 1948.

    Great update. For me London station area looks too built up and obscures the view into the platforms. If the operators can't see the buffer stops it will make operations a little stressful. But its all good progress, and look forward to the dedicated video mentioned regarding the modifications and adjustments made.

    As always a great insight into this massive project. For me I think London looks a little too built up. I was wondering if you pulled the front of the station canopy back a few inches if it might relieve the building "pressure" a little? The turntable looks excellent as do it surrounds. Well done to all concerned. Cheers, Bob

      @dattouk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Bob, They operating crew are enjoying it as is. I am considering cutting more of the canopy sides away to allow more visibility (like the Eagle comic pictures). The plan was always to overwhelm a little, but I will let you all know how the operators feel in a later video.

    Godzilla meets the tech King Kong of layouts! When feeling guilty pangs of getting a little too obsessed with this superb hobby, watching another great McKinley update resets my barometer. One definitely needs to keep a bit of humour in the mix when sods law is about👍

    Forgive the silly question but may I enquire about the financial infrastructure behind the passion & dream coming true. As much as most of your crew must love what they do I can’t help but feel there is some form of payment that happens. Even opening the doors for viewing at say a conservative price of a hundred pounds a head would not see the foot traffic pay the bills. So is it just a life of hard work and smart career moves that sees you with a healthy bank balance to keep ‘living the dream’ or is there more? I covered two videos in the past year covering both Budget & Death. I know they are subjects many of us don’t discuss on channels like this but it’s fair game and I think tips we can share with each other ensure future generation enjoying this mighty fine art have a comprehensive foundation to what makes the mighty 6x4ft Hornby layout through to the magnificent McKinley the success and life accomplishments come true. Cheers.

    • @dattouk
      @dattouk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Josef. I appreciate your curiosity and its interesting as to what you consider 'fair game'. However we feel there are some things that must be left to peoples imagination. The bit I am keen to discuss is how we all draw young people into the hobby. For example, I am in awe at the effort Pete Waterman is putting into creating layouts that draw people in around the UK. I need to find a way to follow in his example one we have completed to scenics. Regards, David

    • @josefbuckland
      @josefbuckland 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dattouk ahh yes the Father Christmas approach. I covered a video regarding budgets and finance since it’s a killer for some getting into the hobby. Yes future generations like my 2yo and for me it’s all about Hornby pickup any one of the annual brochures and indeed just like the Are you being served episode that I shared on my channel there is a feature Hornby layout. Somehow they managed to capture things without being too seriously professional or ultra ultra high realistic. There’s this fine balance that just gets people in every time and they’ve always stayed pretty accurate to a fair type of a price considering and you build away I’ve always liked the approach, and hence why I’ve dedicated my layout to Hornby and all the cabinetry is in Hornby red and was installed on the 100th year anniversary. I think it’s absolutely marvelous but yes look at how many tremendous channels we have to follow from the higher detail and ultra realistic ones to some of the most primitive ones that we meet some of the most wonderful characters like Louis said It is a wonderful world.

    Great to see the progress. Maybe one way to give visual access to the station is to have the canopy being partially open in the process of being rebuilt, perhaps after war damage.
    I couldnt resist having a look for Godzilla in London and found Wikizilla. It tells me of D.R.A.G.M.A.s, Crustaceous Rex and Dogora but not Godzilla. On the other hand it would be historically correct to have Kitten Kong (The Goodies) knocking down the Post office Tower, blimey thats over 50 years ago!!
    Have a great week!!

    Amazing work, mind-blowing, you should have acted as consultants for HS2! At least in your era there's no 15 minute cities or ULEZ cameras👍✌️💜😳😲😀😀
    Stunning work, clever re the backscene and other challenges that you faced👍✌️💜😊
    Were you not tempted to use PECO or SMP bullhead on the visible areas🤔🤔
    It's a marvelous project and the thinking and planning alone is a huge task. I'm basically a lone modeller, who gets family help for my - relatively - small O gauge trunk line. I'm thinking of getting some pro help in, as I'm not going to be as old as Methuselah. I'm not a wealthy guy, but I have found that commissioning others, even for wagon loads (or even just buying some in, with a couple of tweaks) helps immensely and it supports cottage/artisan suppliers too and frees me to work on the areas I enjoy more (although I can do most tasks after 50 or so years, including track building - my skill set is good, but my faculties fail me) and allows me more room to think and plan. 7mm is more of a modelling scale (not as much as 3mm or similar and more RTR is now available in 7mm), so that needs a lot of consideration and should not be underestimated - although I look on longingly at modern 4mm, 7mm stole my heart, so needs must I suppose.
    Keep up the good work, it's a pleasure to see the team at work✌️👍💜😊

    On the backdrops, such an angled surface always makes it difficult to do horizon view justice. From the straight on views it looks the part. From the overall view it’s not disturbing because the eye observes the angle it is mounted on. However it would have been interesting to see how a ‘forced perspective’ edit would have worked out. Of course that may just as well be a hard job to accomplish, especially where image compression upwards may result in odd lineage which would/could disturb the head on view. Maybe the 45° angle is too much of a challenge there. Nevertheless, it may be interesting to look into such a projection.
    Love the explanations of the different aspects of the renovation/rebuild. Clearly, the connection to the layout extension required some major changes. Humbly think the low relief covering the thru tracks look their part. Hats off! Looking forward to your next episode. Cheerio

      Thank you for the encouragement. I had no idea about forced perspectives until I travelled to Warley and met a chap on stand D25a with a wonderful diorama. Too late now.. What we have dome works well on the other wall at the far end with a 45 degree wall and a valley.. II'll post a picture of that when we present an update on Manchester..

    David, Very nice the backscene takes us back to London in the 60's with all the cranes around as London finally started to be re-built after World War 2. In 1963/4 the Post Office Tower was the new "kid" on the block. The magazine Look and Learn issued a special supplement on the Tower and Dan Dare battled an alien on the Tower in '64. The backscene looks like it's straight out of the t.v. show "The Power Game." Before the camera zoomed down to the streets below. I have to say an L.N.W.R. loco shed thru me off line at first. I had to remind myself this is now British Rail. But I'll have to get used to an L.N.W.R. engine shed and a GWR. Coaling Stage in the same scene. The new bunker style signal boxes were just coming into use in the early '60's. Overall "London" is coming along very nicely. Cheers, Chris Perry.

    The real solution to visability for the operators is too do what would have been done in real life, the use of cameras. Thanfully today we have itty bitty cameras of high quality that can fit under the canopy and be shown on a screen next to the one thqt's up there allready. A few buttons added on to change cameras and the view.😀

    • @dattouk
      @dattouk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Our operators are enjoying the station and not asking for cameras! I will try to give a clearer impression on the next video of London to allay our viewers concerns.

    David,
    One for your DCC experts.....
    For the Locos that did NOT want to crawl and start very slowly when having a DCC decoder put in them... what did you do to adjust the CVs so that when shunting etc , the locos did move extremely slowly?
    Cheers Paul

    • @dattouk
      @dattouk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Paul, The honest answer is we didn't have to do very much. The ESU chipset appears to make most models behave quite well - It comes with an auto configure mechanism using CV54 and F1. When we find one that is a poor performer, we take it apart and service the motor and gears fully. There are a few models that too hours and there were three that defied our best efforts that were sold on i.e. we gave up. I feel that was not the techie answer you wanted. David

  • @alanmusicman3385
    @alanmusicman3385 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wow - deeply impressive stuff here guys. As has been suggested, installing some miniature cameras at track height at the inside end of each platform might help. I would think it possible that your automation system could manage a camera switcher so that the associated screen shows the operators the view down the currently active track at any given moment. Your back scene solution is superb - as is the new canopy.

    • @dattouk
      @dattouk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @stephenpike3147
    @stephenpike3147 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    To me (and I stress that) the railway looks great, you meet the late Cyril Freezer’s golden rule of seeing and operating the trains as focal point - scenery and buildings should promote…. except for London. The frontal buildings totally block out the trains and the canopy. I would try shortening the car park looking one back three or four segments (it’s way too intrusive to YOUR scene - can you take it back so see the buffer stops?) and shorten the two white ones, which again obstruct/ block the trains. With the extra viewable platform length now gained increase the gap between the whites to balance the train view. Do you have to have both? Removing one to see the trains would be even better. As always it a compromise between accuracy (you are not a 1/76 scale person viewing and inspecting it) versus a giant and the giants view and enjoyment or frustration of operating the representation of the original 1/76 scene. For buffer stops how about using a hidden camera and small display e.g. truck reversing unit? Can you change the light source striking the canopy so you can see through the glazing rather than getting all that reflection? Hope this helps in your deliberations. All the best Stephen

    • @dattouk
      @dattouk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dear Stephen, Thank you for your comments. Its a challenge to get things right with city terminus stations.They are normally totally enclosed in real life. We have created cut-aways to allow our operators to see inside and we might have to increase the viewing 'gaps' if the operators want/need them. The large buildings in the foreground were designed to be give an impression of cramped space. It would be unrealistic to have lowly single storey building is the centre of London. From an operational perspective, the computer drives the trains in and out and when the operators need to perform shunting duties, the RFID system shows what is in each platform. I think the camera viewing angle in this video has given a slightly misleading impression as the operators are enjoying the London yard as it stands without then need for cameras and reduced buildings. Having said all that, thank you for your constructive contribution and I hope we will be able to entertain you in person when we start inviting clubs down to operate for a day in 2024.

    • @stephenpike3147
      @stephenpike3147 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dattouk Hi David, Many thanks for the explanation. Totally agree on opposing perspectives operator view to what is filmed and we see, so pleased to hear operators are enjoying it. I got the impression (rightly or wrongly) it was a good bit off on operators viewing so was trying to be objective, constructive and honest on what I saw/ heard to see if any suggestions might help.
      It would be great opportunity to see the layout in person having followed this engineering/ modelling feat for quite a while. So many thanks for the kind invitation. Unfortunately I am in Canada in an area that has scant railway modelling support, unlike when had Gaugemaster almost on my doorstep; certainly not for OO gauge BR/ LNER being my areas of modelling. I do not have any plans to visit UK for sometime yet, but who knows!

I see a screen on left wall showing the whole inside of London station from above thanks to a fixed camera, so visitors can permanently watch all movements inside the station while standing behind the operators. Not detracting from the work but the things that make London recognisable in the railway and architectural sense are not there. There's too much red brick, it needs to be London brick which is a yellow colour (or dirty brown) and similarly the stone retaining walls are just not London. I think you may be worth looking at some of the Street Level Models and Kingsway kits to see what I mean. The backscene elements they sell might also be helpful as well.

    • @dattouk
      @dattouk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do love these suggestions. When I think of the BIG stations in London, its like a bag of smarties. The yellow brick ones are Kings Cross and the frontage of Liverpool St. St Pancras is red brick, Euston is grey, Waterloo is glass, stone and red brick. We did colour the engine shed in yellow brick. There is a logic to our choices. I will have to deliberate in more detail on the next video.
