25 June 1975 marked the beginning of a 21-month emergency imposed by the then PM Indira Gandhi. In episode of 506 of #CutTheClutter, originally published on 25 June 2020, Editor-in-chief Shekahr Gupta explains how the Emergency became a 'bootcamp' for future politicians and created a cadre of pan-national leaders.

there is no bigger joke than those who imposed emergency, amended constitution over 80 times (starting with Nehru over freedom of speech), dismissal of state government whenever they wanted (starting with Nehru's dismissal of first non congress government in Kerala in 1956), today talking about protection of constitution. Today's anniversary is the best given that one dynast took office today and another dynasty would be contesting in kerala.
Those people are dead! Those people are not talking about protection of constitution. That way you are British, because your great-grandfather was a British subject.

SG manages to find something to praise (or credit) the Gandhi dynasty for anything in Indian politics. He is a true follower or believer of Nehru/gandhi dynasty that way.

Mr. Gupta you conveniently forgot DMk and Karunanidhi. JP was invited as a state guest, freely conducted rallies all over TN. TN was an asylum for open leaders, helped swamy and Fernandez to escape and the present CM Stalin was in jail, brutally attacked. Hundreds of DMK cadres were arrested and tortured in cells. Finally DMK ministry was dismissed.
I dont understand all these comments, at no point does Shekhar Gupta defend the emergency. The video is to show how times of crisis and mass movements help our politics grow and become more diverse.

The ATROCITIES done by Indira's administration during emergency especially in name of sterilization campaign is unforgivable and unforgettable. Karma is a beyatch. You get what you sow. Reason and time might be different but bad karma catches up no matter who you're and what you do. In this case it was 30 "royal enfields" and a plane crash. 23 had passed through, while 7 remained inside the garage.

Mr Gupta won’t crtiticize emergency but gives it a positive spin. Shows Mr Gupta’s staunch loyalty and bias to “Mrs. Gandhi” and Gandhi name generally.
Shekhar Gupta claims that Print Media is unhyphenated. Because of his " truth", I took subscription of Rs. 12500/ for two and a half years. Over the years, I heard him and Jyoti Malhotra. I got the sense that the Print media was partial and not unhyphenated. His truth turned into falsehood. I stopped subscription and replied to his email that he was wrong about his media.
Certainly not worth taking subscription because after all he is hard core Congressman so his narrative building starts with the first word he utters

Even with a CONGRESS, having less than 100 MPs invokes enough fear of them being back and vindictive enough for the likes of SG and others to behave like good boys and make non-controversial content about the Emergency. Yet, I need to find quality journalistic content reminding the Indian voters of what the emergency did to our democracy and society and how the Nehru family got to edit the preamble of the constitution and add sick mind’s words like SICKULAR and SOCIALIST.

Media during emergency & under Modi was & is spineless. Shekar gupta has been equivocal on every big & small issue in a circular way, without hitting on its head. So bold he is used to be. Modi has grasped well the timidity of press correspondents. He had found that instead of forcing them directly to toe his line he had made his crony capitalists buy the English channels either in full or partially. No one could then say that press had been subjugated during his reign in the last 10 years or so.

In your conclusion line perhaps you forgot to mention that late JP was convalescing as a guest of Seth Ram Nath Goenka at Express towers Bombay and had a dialysis machine set up closer to his room .
Sadly JP passed away soon after and late Mrs Gandhi attended his funeral in Bihar .
Though I used to follow the emergency period through the newspapers, this discourse under the head university of democracy has put the events in chronological order which made me remember in an orderely manner

The other, brighter side of the Emergency can’t be ignored. Trains always ran terribly late earlier. For the first time trains ran on time. Corrupt officials were shown the door and sent home straight. These were matters widely acknowledged then. I was of 26 years then and witnessed emergency events first hand. But I am and always was an ardent critic of emergency. Still, there is no reason to recall emergency as the starting point of the functioning of the new parliament.
Seems you are promoting Indira Gandhi emergency, for the promotions multi feudal parties (by and large) and in a way unwittingly defending congress and allies insult to the President of India in todays parliament session in form of hooliganastic shouting/booing.
Indulge me to add an analogy to what Shekhar is pointing at. In medical speak Indira was like a bad deadly viral infection but it brought together the immune system of our nation in a way that the antigens (imprisoned and tortured opposition leaders) are now making sure we don’t get infected by the viral infection of anti meritocracy dynastic politics. RSS Chief Balasaheb Deoras has apologized to Indira Gandhi for protesting against Emergency and wrote 2 letters to her. He promised full cooperation to Indira if released from jail. ofcourse indira did not trust him and hence did not release him. okay Congress should be condemned for emergency, by the way BJP also must also be condemned for Deoras' promise of support for emergency.

Is there even any equivalence or proportionality between the horrors of a draconian emergency where millions of Indians were brutalized, abused and an imprisoned man negotiating his release terms.
