I am a master gardener now for ten years and work with orchids all the time. They say no matter your age you can always learn something and today I learned about the tannic acid and the black tea. Never knew this. Thank you so much Michael. I enjoyed your video very much.
Hi, I'm Italian, can you help me? How long should the roots stay in the black tea? In semi-hydroponics, water should be added only to the bottom or also to the top?
I saw this video last spring during our lockdown and knew I had plenty of time to devote to it. Lost flowers, stem and even some roots, because I didn't Know how to take proper care of it. With your instructions my poor little plant developed new leaves, a stem AND elegant blossoms! I can't thank you enough for all your expertise and wisdom! I'm now nursing a second orchid that someone else was ready to throw out, but I have all the faith in the world now that she'll come around too! YOU ARE A STAR! XOXO
I have 3 orchids that looked exactly like the before pictures in this video!!!! I tried your tea method and it's only been 4 days and I see an unbelievable difference in 2 of them already.....I'm so excited!!!! Thank you soooo much!!!!
I finally fell down a useful-and-not-crazy TH-cam rabbit hole! I adore orchids, but have never had much luck with them before. I'm so glad I found your videos!
I actually got my two orchids to re-bloom following Michale's tips. I couldn't believe it! I have a black thumb and kill all plants (especially orchids!), but his methodology really worked! Super grateful for the tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I've been growing orchids since 1978 but your video has taught me quite a few new tricks that I was completely unaware of, not to mention the teabag trick! Appreciate the videos; keep making them!
@@rizasantri6546 I have the plants sitting in a medium that was originally intended for an aquaponics setup that ended up being a failed experiment. (ha ha! I have lot of those around my house.) Basically, if I get a new plant that is potted in moss, the first thing I do is get rid of the moss. Orchids are basically air plants that originated in tropical climates and many times they cling to the bark of a tree so reproducing that as closely as possible is the best way to go. I used to get special orchid potting mix from the big box stores, but since I started using the growing medium meant for aquaponics (I had about 40 lbs of the stuff and I recycle everything), I potted up the old orchids in the new medium after getting rid of the dead roots. This is usually done after they have finished flowering. Then I sit them on a saucer that contains the same aquaponic grow medium, which is basically marble-sized balls of clay. As far as watering, I have many other edible tropical plants and trees (like Avocado, lime, orange, olive, fig and a pepper vine that will eventually give me the kind of pepper you put on food) in my living room whose windows face south. When I check them to see if they need water, about once a week, I also take a good look at the orchids to see if they need watering or just misting. Now that it's getting warm, and they've started flowering, I tend to mist them frequently (usually when I remember, but since they're all sitting in my living room, they're not hard to miss). Occasionally, when I think of it, I'll add some very diluted liquid fertilizer to the spray bottle. As you can tell, I'm not prone to doing things on a tight schedule. Winter is trickier because the house gets warm and all the plants (and people too!_ need water in the atmosphere. I have started putting some containers of water under the tables that hold the plants so it evaporates into the atmosphere and I find that has helped considerably. Anyhow... try phalaenopis (moth) orchids. They're the easiest to grow. Good luck! :)
Michael, I used your tea method on my orchid that was in worse shape than the one you show. It took about two weeks. of soaking and drying the way you describe in the video. Amazingly, my orchid is alive and very healthy - no more floppy leaves; nice dark green color and lots of new root growth! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I know how to keep my orchids healthy!
This amazes me! I almost killed my orchid by dehydrating it because I followed the instructions that the orchid brought about watering it just once a week. This has helped my orchid a lot. Thanks
Agreed! The egg glass method once a week almost made me kill mine as well. Now I sink the pot in water twice a week and let that dry well before I put the pot back. Not sure that is too much, but my orchids look really healthy from this.
I've "rehabbed" some of my orchids with much less roots and leaves and got REAL lucky to have it completed.e back for me. I live in the United States, New Jersey to be exact. It's a challenge to get an orchid to bloom. But I successfully completed the rehab and my baby came back!!! That plant looked so good to begin with. I was jealous 😭 I've started with three leaves and a tiny stump of a root. Keep them coming!!
I did the tea method I learned from you! I adapted my phalaenopsis to semi-hydroponic, I now fertilize and flush once a week (this was a beauty find from your channel)...and I now see a new little root (I think you called nubbin) coming and I believe (my fingers and toes are crossed) I also see a new flower spike just starting. Thank you for your clear videos and amazing information. My patience and what I learned from you are paying off! I believe this summer I just might have some new beautiful flowers!!!
Hi, I'm Italian, can you write me how long the roots must stay in the black tea? you have repotted in semi-hydroponics and you fertilize the orchids once a week right?
Thank you for this video. It helped my orchid! I tried it with just water and in only a few hours I noticed the leaves were a bit more firm. After 3 days all the leaves are firm including one that was starting to turn yellow. The more shriveled roots turned plump too which I didn’t think was possible.
This is so timely as I had been able to enjoy my orchids for many years until suddenly one after the other, they started to lose vitality and just dried up😢 I’m going to start on saving my orchids, thank you 🙏
Thank you for taking the time to explain WHY you do things! I appreciate your videos, I learned so many things and I look forward to putting the knowledge to work on my orchids!
Thank you for the video. I followed your steps and successfully revived two of my Phalaenopsis orchids over a two week period. 1 month later the larger one has put out three bloom stalks! Love your videos!
I was just about to toss my orchids, but since I found this channel, I feel bad and might give them another chance. I’ve had them for years and although I took good care of them, They weren’t in a bright enough spot due to where we lived. Now we have moved and I have a very bright kitchen where they currently are. They have never bloomed since I received them, about 6 years ago. I did move them into a pantry to kill them off, then weeks later felt bad and started caring for them again. I will watch more of your vids and give it another go starting with this tea method. Thank you so much!
Michael, Well Done, sir. Excellent production and a great script. The process is well documented and illustrated. I appreciate the pace of delivery and editing. I appreciated the closeups and the repositioning of your camera after a break in the continuity. I'm a former Instructional Designer.
Thank you for making these videos simple and straightforward. You are a talented teacher. You are de-mystifying the subject of how to keep orchids, for me!
I cut the stems off to the soil . I didn’t know about how to take care of it since it was a gift. It’s nice and green but should I just throw it away since it has no stem to flower?
I have to say I was dubious! However I tried your tea method on two of my orchids that I thought I was going to lose! It works! Orchids started coming back to life after about 4 days! Thank you! You have another fan! Keep your videos coming!
Love the video. Got a very neglected orchid from my boss' office when we were cleaning it out and it's super dehydrated. Now I know how to rehydrate I'm going to give it a chance for a new lease on life. Hope I can do it so I can put all the rest of Michael's videos to good use. I feel like I have a new best friend in Michael. :-)
Thanks for your super series on converting my old sad store purchase phalaenopsis orchids to semi-hydroponic. I have converted ALL of mine and they have never ever been healthier - I have flowers on plants that were bare for over a year. You are a champ.
Michael, I have just finished watching several of your orchid videos. I am very impressed with your videos and the way you explain each step. I love orchids and unfortunately I can't tell you how many I have killed over the years. Your video has given me the confidence to try again! I am going to use the leca and will also try the black tea method on the orchid that is barely hanging on to life. The leaves are very soft and I am hopeful with the black tea/tannic acid it will come back to life and I will be planting it in leca. Thank you for your video and I will definitely be watching more of them! God bless you!
sorry to be off topic but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly lost the account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me
@Rex Reyansh I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Thank you Michael, I rescued a Phalaenopsis with your tea method. It has started new roots and a new leaf and now I have to go buy the clay beads. I am so excited that I was able to revive it. I also put the flower spike in some water and now that is blooming. Who knew... Thank you again!
🤔first... how did youtube know that I needed this video? Second... I didn’t even know it was possible for the plant to survive after the flowers died Third... clearly I need this channel Thank you!
Oh yes, orchids will live years and years if well cared for. I buy them from grocery stores and places like that when they stop blooming for $1 and then rehab them and give them out as gifts. I have about 20 right now and I absolutely love them! It's not all that hard to get them to bloom again either.
You just snagged yourself an impressed new fan 🤗. I've watched many orchid tutorials and NOT ONE had your method for rehydrating phal leaves! Absolutely floored that the before & after are the same plant 👏👏👏👏
Eternally grateful I found you and your valueable videos! I have a phalaenopsis Ive had for 3 years. I'm a total orchid novice and haven't killed her yet. Thought I'd give this procedure a try. I removed the original flower stalks that each had 3-5 leaves and tossed them in the trash. More about that in a bit. My poor orchid had a HUGE plug beneath her and only about 3 viable roots. No idea how she was still alive! I sure hope she can make some more roots. If she does it's all due to you😊 So I was hooked on watching orchid videos and kept thinking about the stalks sitting in the trashcan. After some Googling I discovered I had thrown out 2 keikis!!!!! Those weird green off shoots were aerial roots!!! At about 1 am I fished them out, apologized, and trimmed the ends and put them in some distilled H2O. Later today I will try potting them up. They have been growing on the end of the flower stalks for over a year so hopefully they will survive! Whew! I went from one orchid to three in one swoop!
@@pamelacolander5612 I'm not sure without seeing what you tossed, but those 3-5 leaves on the flower stalks may have been baby orchids tying to establish themselves as plants.
@@marensutton5846hi Maren, thanks for your reply. After watching more videos the day I posted my comment here I watched another video and realized I had tossed 2 keikis!!! I rescued them and they are so far happily growing in their individual pots. I tell ya, these videos are priceless!
YEAH. Mine looks just like this. It was giving to me in a large maybe 6-8” pot packed with rotting sphagnum moss and no drain holes . It was in my friend’s yard outside. There were two orchids now there’s only one. I thought I had overwatered it and that’s why one died and now the one that’s left is dehydrated. I got all the stuff I need now to hopefully revive and grow this orchid.
Fantastic - I hadn’t realised you could handle an orchid’s root system like that.., and tea for the plant 🌱 🌺love it. Such an informative video. Thank you 🙏 😊
After watching this, I checked my 2 newer orchids and they both had them plugs of dirt. I like growing mine in semi hydroponic, baskets, or mounts (I live in the Florida Keys, so its humid enough. And i only use rain water. But this tea bag method is something I'm going to try on my inside orchids, much thanks my friend!💚
Micheal I love your videos. I have been successful to save few sick orchid with your tutorial and am a big fan of your posts. Your tea method was so successful with my moms plant that now everyone in my family want me to help them with their orchid... lol long way to go!
Giving this a go from today with a very dilapidated phaelenopsis. Viable roots came out clearly during the rinse, so there is hope yet. If successful, I’ll re-pot it to orchid bark. (It’s autumn in sun-tropical Brisbane; days are still sunny and warm, so I hope this works! 🤞🏼
The roots are more playable when wet, wet it before you take out the old bark/soil. This is amazing info. Thank you so much! I'm hoping I can save my orchid with this!
I have some very dehydrated orchids that I saved from being thrown out and I cannot wait to try your method to bring them back to their former glory. Thank you for such an informative video ❤
I having been trying a version of this type of rescue on my first orchid. It is recovering slowly but will now try this extended type with the tea bag 😀 (I love tea same as my orchid!) thanks for posting this info
Pam Ela; "Rescue" orchid. I love that term! I have 3 that need rescuing and feeling guilty for neglecting them; for after all, they're living things. Do you know what he used for the repotting phase? Thank you.
Ah! There’s a transition period with semi-hydroponics for orchids?!?! This explains my root rot when I did it. I was so exasperated. I’m watching that video next. Thank you for this video. SOOOO helpful! And yes you are so elegant. Elegantly full of valuable information. Thank you for sharing ❤️
This is just so darn satisfying to watch. I am doing this to save my orchids. I have some older ones that are going to have a tea jacuzzi and trimming today.
What an outstanding video! You definitely have a new follower. I like your clear instruction, quick pacing, and reasons why you're doing certain things. Well done!
Thx Michael, this was great. I couldn’t figure out why all my orchids were dying. I took them out of the pot and I had nearly zero viable roots. Fingers crossed your method brings them to a healthier state
like that the video is just about Orchids and was very informational and concise. Many you tubers go on and on about other things then the subject, this video does not do that.
OMYGOD Michael great results and thank you for sharing!! I've been trying to save my Mom's water culture Phal and it's gotten two new roots, but it has three leaves and the bottom two have gotten dehydrated!! SO hoping this works!! ❤️🙏🏼
I have watched about 10 diff vids and this one Is by far the most helpful. I will be watching a few times to get it right. Great advise thanks for sharing!!!
Aha... many of us were asking what you repotted the orchid in. I finally found the answer way down the list. reposting for the rest of us... Hydroton Original Clay Pebbles - 25 Liter | Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate Made in Germany
+Cynthia Bazzano, do you know if it has to be distilled water and a special tea bag, I have no distilled water and just ordinary supermarket teabags? I have been waiting on reply from Michael's Orchids but so far no response, my orchid is looking sadder by the day! :(
Hi Michael. A friend sent me your video two years ago and it took me until three months ago to listen and apply your process to a badly failing orchid. My life is too busy or my plants are not enough of a priority. The tannin solution actually worked really really well, but most of the roots were so degenerated that they broke off during the process. However, one new one grew, but that is not enough to sustain the plant, obviously. The leaves looked really really healthy at the close of your process. I was reluctant to keep doing the tannin solution because too much water also is not good for orchids. But now we have one functioning root & the orchid is back in the wood chip “earth“ and not doing so well again. Perhaps I should take a picture. I’m reluctant to give up because it did so very well with your process. I don’t quite know how to add a picture in this medium. It’s quite a small plant. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WONDERFUL VIDEO, AND YOUR HELP SO FAR! Karen
I tried this on one of my droopy orchids. It took about 2 weeks to see any results. It has been a month and the droopy leaves are gone and are perfectly fine. Thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you, I do believe you saved my 2 orchids.......They no longer have to suffer the same fate as my last orchid. Such beautiful plants 💗💗💗
Oh Michael...thanks so much for going over and over this stuff again...i'm just two years into my OrKids and trying to figure out best practices... We've done outside gardening so successfully for years, but just before my husband passed he bought me a little mine Phal...i've kept it going but recently it crumbled into root rot...it seems to be getting happy given your advice
I am so glad I found your video today. My hubby gave me an orchid while we were dating. I could not throw it away eventhough it looks like it was dead and surprisingly the flower bloomed from it after a year. But after 4 years the leaves look dehydrated (that is what I learned today that's what they were suffering from). I should definitely try your tea water soak and dry method to revive them cause it would be painful for me to chuck it away. Many thanks for the tips.
I am going to try this with my orchid! It’s 7 years old and very sentimental to me. It has been struggling lately and is down to 1 dehydrated leaf, but still has healthy looking roots.
Did anyone else fall in love with this guy just by watching this video alone? I have an orchid that desperately needs this done. I have one question, @Michael's Orchids do you make a fresh new tea jacuzzi each time you alternate or use the existing one? Thank you for this informative video!
This tutorial was perfect. The orchid I was working with looks exactly like everything you showed us! (Except mine doesn’t have as many healthy roots.) but I think I’ve done all I can for it, now we wait! Thank you!
I love the container you planted your orchid into, looks so nice , thanks for the video will soak mine in tee and wait for the results. Maybe thin will make my orchid bloom one day, 3 years now and not a single flower...

@@marensutton5846 How do you help the baby orchids on the stalks? I have one.
@@marensutton5846 yes they're keikis, that is what baby orchids are called
This was a very helpful tutorial that I’m going to put to good use with several sad orchids. So glad I found you channel, Michael! Cheers!
Thank you so much for this great tutorial! My orchids, including a baby are coming back to life as I write this. Super happy.
I have watched many videos on fb and nothing is working, this is the first anyone has mentioned black tea!! Gonna give it a shot today! Thank you
..dude....thanx a million...my wife gonna love me more soon as i perform your method and ways to our orchids...🤔
Hello Quispy
@@Thomasfrohwitter Hi! 🤗💚✌
@@cristinarnold good morning. It's nice to hear from you, how do you spend your spare time?
Micheal I love your videos. I have been successful to save few sick orchid with your tutorial and am a big fan of your posts. Your tea method was so successful with my moms plant that now everyone in my family want me to help them with their orchid... lol long way to go!
This is such a wonderful tutorial! My phaleanopsis is looking bad and I need to rehab it desperately. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Very helpful, straight to the point, time well spent. Thanks! Pls. tell us more about the medium you are using.
I wish I had found you sooner but I now can try to care for an orchid with some confidence. Thank you.
The roots are more playable when wet, wet it before you take out the old bark/soil. This is amazing info. Thank you so much! I'm hoping I can save my orchid with this!
Great vide. Thank you!
I have some very dehydrated orchids that I saved from being thrown out and I cannot wait to try your method to bring them back to their former glory. Thank you for such an informative video ❤
Terrific vid Michael, thank you for this clear and precise demonstration. Now to save my orchids with your help. You have a beautiful day too. X
I having been trying a version of this type of rescue on my first orchid. It is recovering slowly but will now try this extended type with the tea bag 😀 (I love tea same as my orchid!) thanks for posting this info
Hello, I used Tea in one of my orchids and NOW... My Orchid is about the bloom I have flowers coming up and she recuperated ... awesome... thank you
Sorry to bother you, did u use the acid with teabag or u just used normal water?
You did the best explanation, now I know what to do when my orchids going to dry..thanks for this.
Haha, did anyone else's Google set a timer when it heard him in the background?
Great video by the way ♥️
This worked like a charm for me on two miserable rescue orchids, and one is putting out a flower spike right now!
I just happened on this video and it shows me exactly what to do with the orchid my son gave me that I don't want to die!!! Thanks.
Loved this ❤ rehabbing someone's orchid is the sign of a true friendship hehe ❤🌱
What an outstanding video! You definitely have a new follower. I like your clear instruction, quick pacing, and reasons why you're doing certain things. Well done!
Seriously WOW this is the best orchid knowledge that I have ever heard! Gives me some hope that I try grow some phals again :)
Thank you!!!!
Thank you my sister gave me one for my birthday.... So I will take very good care of this orchid ....
Thanks for this! Did this last week and my orchid is blooming finally after almost a year
You explained the process very well. Now I know how to rejuvenate my phals. Thank you.
Thx Michael, this was great. I couldn’t figure out why all my orchids were dying. I took them out of the pot and I had nearly zero viable roots. Fingers crossed your method brings them to a healthier state
Thank you for such a well put together video! No BS at all...to the point...So glad i found your videos! Excellent job.
like that the video is just about Orchids and was very informational and concise.
Wow! What a great tip about the tea solution. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Thank you my orchid needed you in it’s life right now😍
Thankyou from the UK Michael. Great video, I sent this to two friends 🤗🌱
I have watched about 10 diff vids and this one Is by far the most helpful. I will be watching a few times to get it right. Great advise thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you for this easy to follow guide! I will be using it for my mother's poor orchids and share it with friends!
Aha... many of us were asking what you repotted the orchid in.
@@angelbabesuz1612 hi. I believe he mentioned black tea (?). Any brand is fine i guess.
Sometimes we can get distilled water from a pharmacy.
@@zaidahibrm1326 Thank you :)
Cynthia Bazzano use rainwater and any brand of regular black tea (IOW, not green or white tea)
"Laying in a jacuzzi" haha. awesome video, Michael! Thanks, I'm helping my orchids right now!
No, "lying" in a jacuzzi.
Useful information, not overly long and minimal “umms.”
Five stars.
Karen
Pefect timing ! This is what I needed this morning ,this explains whole lot for my Orchids why they look so unhealthy. I can't thank you enough !!
Thank you for sharing this... I never have luck with the orchid but you've inspired me to give the plant another try.
Hello Bren
@@Thomasfrohwitter hello!
@@BrenHaas it's nice to hear from you, how do you spend your spare time?
I tried this on one of my droopy orchids. It took about 2 weeks to see any results. It has been a month and the droopy leaves are gone and are perfectly fine. Thanks
Did you use a new tea solution everyday?
Yeah do you change the tea? Or are you lying and you never did it
Nikita Saini i know your comment is old but I just change the tea when it starts to smell
@@kasher373 Did you use the tea solution for 2 weeks?? OR just a few days then switch to plain water as per the video?
FIFII No, I kept it in tea then changed it ever so often
WOW! I love this presentation. just give me ideas on how to take care of my orchids for the first time in my life. Thank you so much for it!
How often should an orchid flower? Thank you. Your video is awesome. You talk and get to the point without rushing. Thank you. ☀️
Hello Nancy
Thank you, thank you, thank you, I do believe you saved my 2 orchids.......They no longer have to suffer the same fate as my last orchid. Such beautiful plants 💗💗💗
Love the tea bag comment, "because I am elegant like that"...lol Great video
This is amazing. I had no idea you can rehabilitate an orchid. Thanks!
Yay, I’m so glad to hear it’s been helpful!
Hello Tara
Oh thank you. This is giving me hope that I can rescue my 2 sad orchids.
😃🌿 wow thank you! This video is very very helpful! I have a decent green thumb but am no expert, so my orchids will be undergoing this method today!
This is an amazing tutorial! So easy to understand, follow along and right to the point. 😊
Any kind of tea will be use
"because I'm so elegant." Lol! Love it!
This the best video on orchid care that I've viewed. Thank you. I will look for your other videos.
Amazing thank you. I can now save about 6 of my orchids that look suspiciously like the one you worked on. Thanks so much for the tip.
So glad to come across this channel....now I can try to save my orchid. THANK YOU
