    I love the context given on the car stopped on the bridge. The sped up footage from the other camera helps to show that the car was not stopped and sitting there to delay the bridge opening, as some were claiming on a video I saw that only had the main footage.

    Why isn't there something to block the end of the sidewalk when the bridge goes up, or an electronic device on each end to count how many pedestrians, and cars go across, or motion detectors, or something? No, just one person, no backups.

    • @SmallTownGirl000
      @SmallTownGirl000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 2:26 you can see the gate on the sidewalk swing shut. Why it was so late, I don't know. (It might be because it is intended as "one-way" so you enter moving towards the camera, the 1st gate shuts behind you, and you are expected to contiune to cross, and then the gate shuts behind you again.)
      How do you get a counter to differentiate between a person, a biker, a motorcycle, and a car? What happens if a pedestrian gets into a car on the bridge, so the counter thinks there is one more person on the bridge than there is? You would then need an override, which an incompetnet bridge operator could just hit regardless. And on this bridge, there is that little lookout area on the left, what happens if there is a pedestiran there? What if there is a seagull on the bridge setting off a motion detector? What if the tech gets hacked, and the operator is so used to relying on the tech they don't even look at the bridge? Who pays buy, instal, and mantain the counters/ motion detectors on the 617,000+ bridges in the US?
      It SOUNDS like an easy solution, but I don't think it is.
      I imagine this is a hard job, because you have so much responsibility, but likely spend much of your time just sitting there, bored, but you can't stop paying attention for incoming boats, and MUST follow procedure for each and every bridge opening, which this operator failed to do. Not a complicated job, but a hard one. That's no excuse. The individual needs to take responsbility for failing to properly to their job. The company needs to have better training, records, and procedures. If an employee in a job like this messes up, you don't reprimand, you RETRAIN.

    Something that they are not mentioning is that after a certain amount of time some welfare recipients are required to get a job and the state of Florida helps them get it. That doesn't have anything to do with the requirements for being a bridge tender not requiring certification and regular testing or the lack of cameras monitoring their behavior but I have no doubt some of those doing that job got it by help from the state.

      @kimberblueyes3638 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hugh007 my comment stems from the doubt that these people have the intelligence and the acuity to always be accurate in this important job. I’m not saying it has any thing to do with a high school diploma but certainly if someone has a discipline to finish high school and has any aspirations of having a long-term place at this job then there oughta be training to find out if they possess the skills to do the job. I haven’t heard from anyone if there’s training or not besides maybe a short orientation I may be watching a video. It can be boring sitting there all the time and nothing ever happens and then tragedy happens and the operators of the bridge have to be ready… kind of like an emergency dispatcher. After all there is a lot more is at stake than whether or not a ship that needs the clearance gets through.

    They need to up the reguirements these are people's lives here and the city wants to be cheap on hiring people to work wait untill this happens to acity workers family member then they might do something and spend a little money to beef up reguirements on working synch a dangerous pice of eguipment they should also have monthly training and safety procedures and first aid training and disater relief training if not monthly at least every 6months and the training should be mandatory for all personnel so if someone has to cover a shift then they know what to do their also should be loud alarms warning that the bridge is going up just like on train tracks and they should explore the safety mechanical system of the garage door opener if something gets in the way it stops her agaiñthe city needs to be held acountable just like the worker on that shift they were just doing their job and now they will spend along time in prison when the city should have had these safety things ahead of time what good does it do to put the person in prison for this accident when their was never proper traing it is the city that should be in prison not the worker for a accident that he didn't have any traing in what to do

  • @daphneraven6745
    @daphneraven6745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Seriously. Eighth grade education should be enough to look and see if there’s somebody standing on the bridge. That is not a degree program. There might be some integrity involved, but that’s not about education. Let’s not pretend that it is. The people who go ahead and open up a bridge with somebody on it need to be held accountable because it is actually their fault and a choice that they made.

    • @daphneraven6745
      @daphneraven6745 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @STEVE VENTO : i’m entirely with your first couple of sentences. After that, we’re speculating derogatively about education of people hired. That part is not fair. You’re trying to make this about Education. It’s not about that. You don’t have to have much education to decide whether or not to kill somebody because you can. And we can’t be saying that all people who are hired to operate bridges with moving parts can be described as you insinuate.Otherwise, everybody who was hired to do such a job would be killing people in their operations of the moving parts of the bridges.
      But I absolutely agree with the first idea that you offered. I think it’s entirely about that. You don’t have to be a nuclear physicist or even a high school graduate to decide not to kill somebody. That’s an ethical and criminal choice.
      When you try to make it about minimal educational standards or other descriptors used for hiring criteria, you take the responsibility of the criminal who chose to kill another human being, and try to put that on the hiring entity. That’s just not right. The only way there’s a hiring entity, even if it’s a government body, there’s responsibility for that is if they fail to do a criminal record check, or if they think there’s a reason to doubt the person’s sanity and don’t have it checked. Outside of those circumstances, it’s entirely on the person who makes the choice.
      At risk of belabouring the point, I’ll put it this way: if you hire somebody to fix your car, and that person takes your car and chooses to run into a street festival full of people, killing many and maiming more, what would that have to do with you and your hiring practices? That employees or contractors decision to do something so devastating would have absolutely nothing to do with whether he had advanced factory training on your make and model of car versus a couple of basic auto shop courses from his/her high school days. Unless you knew that person had terrible antisocial tendencies, or was on the cusp of a catastrophic nervous breakdown, How would that be your fault? The employee who makes the choice is the one who is responsible.
      Because even if you think about yourself as a person in middle school, which was your suggestion of an educational level used for hiring practices, at that point you didn’t kill anybody. It had nothing to do with your education. You probably didn’t even consider harming another human being. And even if somebody to get on your nerves or bully you, you may have considered making a swing, but not killing them. But chances are you didn’t, because you have appropriate social impulse control. Even with only that much education. It was about your choice and value system.

    Did the woman fall through when checking the damage to the rear of her car? And, how did the car get through when the bridge was signaling to go up - was there a gate that goes down and she still drove past it? Or was there no gate? Ultimately, the bridge tender is responsible because her actions led directly to the old woman's death. If she did her job, then the old woman would still be alive.
    That said, the old woman also deserves some blame for her series of stupid actions (i.e. not paying attention to the draw bridge warnings that it's going up, stopping the car right at the gap, and at least in hindsight for us - falling through the gap because she again wasn't paying attention to her surroundings when there was obviously no ground there). One could say that seniors may have a hard time understanding what's going on, processing their surroundings, etc. - in which case then, those seniors shouldn't be driving in the first place if their reasoning skills are that poor.
