unless they had a specialied task the heavy infantry would always carry a spear of some kind as it was a primary weapon whilst (excluding greatswords) swords have always been a secondary weapon, the spartha wasnt used alongside the gladius but was more of a direct upgrade with longer blade the late shield was based off a long oval or pill shape roman tactics mentioned were used by all, square formation has been used on cavalry for ages a roman shield wall didnt differ to anyone elses roman unique tactics often reliad on the shorter weapon, heavy infantry would go in with spear and often right before spear range, throw them which could disable a bunch of shields and mess up their ranks before the romans immediately drew their secondary and closed the gap, when one man stepped at a shield wall he got speared from both flanks but with an entire line rushing past the spearpoint of rthe first line or 2 they would have a direct advantage as until someone drew a shorter weapon only the romans had space to use their weapons overall good like how maille was mentioned instead of ignored like 3/4 of people talking about the romans
