Great review, I own the 85mm 1.4 EF auto focus version and love it. You just convinced me to get the 14mm version as well. (I bought the EF version to use my control ring adapter and other cameras)

I got both of these lenses for my Canon R5. Unfortunately, they were both EF mounts and not RF mounts. They are awesome and a steal for the cost over Canon & Sigma.
The Canon 16-35/2.8 II is known for its soft corners (had it for many years and replaced with a 16-35/4 IS). Whereas the Samyang 14/2.8 in all its versions and mounts has always been a value recommendation. I had one of the early EF models and corner sharpness was impressive. Great review of both lenses. Thank you very much.
6:30... the canon had far more shadow washout when you point a light straight into the lens.. I'm not sure I could call the flare contest equal, because in extreme hdr the the canon shadow lightening would indicate less hdr suitability.
Great video! Really tempted to purchase the 85. Can I ask, the sample videos for both, were they taken on a gimbal or was it just the in body stabilisation that was used?
Thnks, these were just shot on my EOS R that doesnt have IBIS, however it does have digital image stabilisation only, I can't remmber whether it was on, but I think it was :)
I am very excited because tomorrow I would buy me Canon EOS R5 and now because I’ve just watched you hole review and explained everything at a high level you made me buy from Samyang the 14mm f/2.8. Obviously I’ve just bought my Nikon Z6 II a few months ago but I am very disappointed when is it about group picture.. I am a wedding photographer and at my last weddings or christening I’ve messed up because of focus.. I’ve tried normal AF and then MF still same thing about 8-14 pictures for maybe 1 perfect or none of them.. so makes me changing mind about Nikon.. For Nikon Z6 II I’ve been using Nikkor: - 24-70mm f/4 - 50mm f/1.8 - 70-200 f/2.8 I would keep Nikon for second camera and I think I would you my misses for being second photographer with to be cover. Hopefully I’ve done the right decision. God bless up this guy that may changed my life. Thank you all for reading.

Well to be fair i have not tried the sigma before, but I would imagine that maybe the samyang would be slightly better since it is natively using the rf adapter, however if you do have the RF to EF ND adapter it would be useful to be able to have ND’s already with that Sigma lens as with the RF you can’t use that adapter and you would need to use a conventional screw on type ND filters whenever you needed to use one and that can be very cumbersome in my opinion 😅
I bought the 85 1.4 before I was going to buy the canon 1.2.. I’m so impressed by the Samyang that there’s no reason for the $2k price difference. It’s 95% if the quality of canons from all I could tell.

@@QippysChannel have you updated the firmware on your 85mm 1.4 yet? I just got my Samyang dock in so I could do the update. The new firmware makes it work with ibis and high speed shooting. Unfortunately, I’ve lost the ability to manually focus after auto focusing.

Thank you for the great review! That is what I call premium content. I‘ve searched so long for a comparison between Samyang 14 and EF 16-35 II (as this is the lens I currently own). I‘m cosidering to switch to the Samyang and sell my 16-35. What about the Sigma 14-24 or 14mm? Would you prefer the Samyang over them?
Andy Bee thanks so much for popping by, yeah I gues it would be good to change the 16-35 to the samyang if you know your goin to always work on the wider end, however you will lose the focal flexibility when you need it , as for the sigma although I haven’t tried it but the focal range definitely seems very attractive to me, btw for more content like this pls do consider subbing 😊👍, thanks

Hmmmmm....that's a great question...well if I really had no budget limit i will get the 1.2 Bokeh Monster just for that extra light gulping goodness..but If I was in a pinch for money then maybe I would just settle with the samyang which is really great as it is...also if you shoot faster subjects then samyang will satisfyyou a little more as the 1.2 is a slow focuser and is more suited to slower subjects.

I recently bought this lens and must have gotten a dud. Sharpness was inconsistent with only the very center being sharp, the upper right corner being the worst for sharpness. I ended up returning it and buying the Canon 15-35mm 2.8 L. Much more expensive, but I had instant buyers remorse by how this lens felt and performed. I had heard quality control wasn’t the best, not sure how common an issue this might be, but I don’t know if I will give them a chance again.
Hmmm, yeah , for me I felt for it’s price I felt it wasn’t too bad, and it is because of it’s price also I ddnt put too high of an expectation I guess, but sorry to hear your experience, I hope you are pleased with your 15-35 though 😊👍

Looking at other photos from the lens it seems that might have been my issue. The 15-35 is amazing, but definitely hurts the wallet :(

Generally the autofocus worked pretty well as far as I can remmeber, however if the place is very dark you may have to hit longer shutter speeds since it’s only a 2.8 and there might be some stabilisation required either via IBIS or a tripod,

Thanks so much for dropping me a message , as for the filter I did have a very brief search but I couldn’t immediately find one but best to ask through samyang themselves as it is manufactured that way by them and I’m sure they also have some in house solutions perhaps or at least would br better to guide you, if not try looking at b&h and do a search. As for the 85 f2 IS STM I think if you’d like a closer focusing distance and some macro then this lens is perhaps a better option to get instead of the Samyang 85, which doesn’t do any macros at all, but to be really fair I cant 100% judge it as I haven’t tried that lens yet, anyway hope that helps, btw do consider subscribing if you haven’t already to help this channel to grow 😊
@@QippysChannel Thanks! The macro capability and close focusing are tempting as you've pointed out, I'm just not thrilled about the fact that it is a "STM" lens.
Olugbuyi Osunsanya why are u concerned about the STM-ness of it 😊? STM lenses are pretty good too fo videos if you do shoot alot of videos that is, I think I should be pretty good but do watch some reviews and see why they say on it 😊

Olugbuyi Osunsanya oh yeah I hardly every bring that lens out these days, nowadays If i need that sort of shot I tend to use my 85 1.2L II but it isn’t light, but it’s super creamy for bokehs!
Well as far as the chromatic aberrations are concerned I found the samyang lens with its new lens coating to be generally quite well controlled, however with most large aperture lenses don’t expect them to not totally be there, but its definitely well controlled based on what I can roughly remmeber 👍
Im really trying to be patient in wait for Sigma RF line. A Sigma rep said they working hard to get it the legal part done. But this lenses look great for the price.

I already have both and love them. For a while I was debating the canon cheaper rf 85mm f1.8 macro with is, but the 1.4 bokeh is beautiful. I don't see the canon 85mm 1.2 rf is worth close to 3k usd given what this can do for 700
@@mynameisdeleted It's easy to get sucked into the "gotta have the best" mentality now days, but I agree with this lens the RF 85 1.2 isn't worth the extra cost unless you never have to check your bank account or if you can easily make your money back with your photography.

Well if you ask me despite the fact tht I havent tried the 14 1.8, I would say it is better if you are doing a lot more low light photography or videography, as the difference between an f1.8 to an f2.8 lens is defintely large , and depending on your needs and budget it will determine which if better for u, if u are shooting lots of astro stuff then I would say if u have the budget the f1.8 is the only way to go, 👍
@@QippysChannel I thought about selling my sigma 14mm f1.8 art and buying this samyang at the moment, so as not to lose a lot of money, because I know that when the rf mount comes out, the lenses and f will devalue.
Actually the Samyang 85 handles CA waaaaay better than Canon 85/1.2, even at 1.4. The purple fringing of this lens is quite terrible to be honest. Really nice video by the way, your voice is really pleasant :)

Just purchased a used copy of this lens in a Sony e-mount for my A7iii camera. Looking forward to using it. It will replace my 12mm f/2.0 Rokinon which is APSC format only...
That lense be sharper than his ef 85. Should of gone into a portrait comparison. In good light or stopped down. The samyamg has darker image from vignette at 1.4 To me top of the clock was sharper on samyang bottom on ef
@@QippysChannel you think equil overall resolution/sharpness? Assume youve taken them out and tested in a variety of situations side by side? Dustin abbott found resolution of the samyang to be on par with the rf 85mm so id be surprised if the ef 85 beat the samyang
I’d say you really can’t go wrong with the Samyang especially if AF speed is of gread importance for the types of subjects you shoot, if you shoot video or even photos the AF is definitely alot faster then the Canon 85 1.2L II but I can’t say if it’s as good as the newer RF or EF 85 1.4 L IS
Which version of Lightroom ur using ? 9.4 or 10 because my r6 raw files are not opening in Lightroom, which is the least version needed to open cr3 files in Lightroom? Apart from 2021 . Please please please reply

Yeah definitely the Canon’s flare is far more pronounced compared to the Samyang’s and I guess it really boils down to personal preference I guess 😅

Did you shoot the video in 4k? Assuming you got around the issue of crop factor.
Oh no I didnt K shot it all in hd and upscaled to 4k , only the drone shots are in 4k 😊

As for the 85 f2 IS STM I think if you’d like a closer focusing distance and some macro then this lens is perhaps a better option to get instead of the Samyang 85, which doesn’t do any macros at all, but to be really fair I cant 100% judge it as I haven’t tried that lens yet, anyway hope that helps, btw do consider subscribing if you haven’t already to help this channel to grow 😊

Olugbuyi Osunsanya why are u concerned about the STM-ness of it 😊? STM lenses are pretty good too fo videos if you do shoot alot of videos that is, I think I should be pretty good but do watch some reviews and see why they say on it 😊

Olugbuyi Osunsanya oh yeah I hardly every bring that lens out these days, nowadays If i need that sort of shot I tend to use my 85 1.2L II but it isn’t light, but it’s super creamy for bokehs!
chromatic abberration and purple fringing is not covered in your review. could you mention how both lenses handle these?
Well as far as the chromatic aberrations are concerned I found the samyang lens with its new lens coating to be generally quite well controlled, however with most large aperture lenses don’t expect them to not totally be there, but its definitely well controlled based on what I can roughly remmeber 👍

Im really trying to be patient in wait for Sigma RF line. A Sigma rep said they working hard to get it the legal part done. But this lenses look great for the price.

I haven’t tested it for astro shots, as I don’t do lots of Astro photography, but i would say it’s perhaps good enough 👍

I already have both and love them. For a while I was debating the canon cheaper rf 85mm f1.8 macro with is, but the 1.4 bokeh is beautiful. I don't see the canon 85mm 1.2 rf is worth close to 3k usd given what this can do for 700
@@mynameisdeleted It's easy to get sucked into the "gotta have the best" mentality now days, but I agree with this lens the RF 85 1.2 isn't worth the extra cost unless you never have to check your bank account or if you can easily make your money back with your photography.

Yeah I did try Amazon too before , and I think what it is, is there is a surplus of this lens in E Mount form, but some very hard to find the RF mount

Well if you ask me despite the fact tht I havent tried the 14 1.8, I would say it is better if you are doing a lot more low light photography or videography, as the difference between an f1.8 to an f2.8 lens is defintely large , and depending on your needs and budget it will determine which if better for u, if u are shooting lots of astro stuff then I would say if u have the budget the f1.8 is the only way to go, 👍

Actually the Samyang 85 handles CA waaaaay better than Canon 85/1.2, even at 1.4. The purple fringing of this lens is quite terrible to be honest.

That lense be sharper than his ef 85.
Should of gone into a portrait comparison. In good light or stopped down.
The samyamg has darker image from vignette at 1.4
To me top of the clock was sharper on samyang bottom on ef
Yeah I found it not 100% one sharper then the other, as some lenses faired better then the other in certain areas of the shots 😅
@@QippysChannel you think equil overall resolution/sharpness? Assume youve taken them out and tested in a variety of situations side by side?
Dustin abbott found resolution of the samyang to be on par with the rf 85mm so id be surprised if the ef 85 beat the samyang
I’d say you really can’t go wrong with the Samyang especially if AF speed is of gread importance for the types of subjects you shoot, if you shoot video or even photos the AF is definitely alot faster then the Canon 85 1.2L II but I can’t say if it’s as good as the newer RF or EF 85 1.4 L IS
