      @CardfightBen a great example is when Jesus is in the synagogue quoting Isaiah. And they praise him, but then he mentions the stories of Zeraphath and Naaman who were both pagans but made clean and "saved" for their faith in Yahweh.
      Naaman in his story even asks if it's okay for him to go into the temple of a false idol even though he KNOWS Yahweh is the true Living God. And Elijah tells him. Your good.
      Which the jews then freaked out and sought to through Jesus off a cliff because it spoke to their false impression that they are elect via the Law.
      Foreshadowing the by faith we are made righteous in Christ creed of us modern Christians.

    In high school, I wrote my senior thesis on basically this exact thing, how too often many Christians view sin as a legalistic checklist and not in terms of a virtuous character. It still is one of my fav things I've ever written, and I'm glad you have similar beliefs

    • @dagwould
      @dagwould ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Wonderful! In the US a 'sin' moralism seems to be pervasive. I've heard talk-backs where people ask 'is such-and-such a 'sin' (and therefore I mustn't do it). Christian life is not like that, it is seeking to live out a godly character and being repentant of any missing the mark. Paul's letters give lots of hints about that path: Philippians 2 provides an excellent perspective, IMO. We need to help people understand that 'sin' is something that before Christ we are captive to in everything that we do and think. It is behavior, attitudes, beliefs, thought (Roms 12:1, 2) that are antithetical to the nature and creation of our Lord. Not merely a list of rules. The 10C provide a great framework, which Yeshua enlarges the scope of in the Sermon on the Mount, but it comes down to the attitude Paul sets out in Phil. 2.

      This actually brought me into conflicts with many Christian leaders, it isn't about what you think or feel, it isn't a checklist, it is what you are trying to do and how much time effort you put into that. Earning money isn't wrong, devoting your life to money is; entertaining yourself isn't wrong, straying away from god is. God will allow you to do what you want to do but you mustn't put it before god. I am glad your paper of truth is something you are proud of.

      One of my favorite examples concerns a semi-orthodox Jewish community in New York that wove a string around their community to say that the entire community was "their home", and thus going anywhere inside the stringed-off area did not constitute travelling during the Sabbath. And I was like... so, how does this work? Do they expect that when they get to heaven, God is going to be like, "Wow! I didn't account for that... you guys really got me there! Good job!"
      If your understanding of Sin involves catching an omniscient God in a legal technicality in order to get away with something or stretch the boundaries of what you're allowed to do, you're not understanding Sin and you're not understanding God.

      From this it follows that man is to use them as much as they help him on to his end, and ought to rid himself of them so far as they hinder him as to it.
      For this it is necessary to make ourselves indifferent to all created things in all that is allowed to the choice of our free will and is not prohibited to it; so that, on our part, we want not health rather than sickness, riches rather than poverty,honor rather than dishonor, long rather than short life, and so in all the rest; desiring and choosing only what is most conducive for us to the end for which we are created..

    I agree with the concept but not completely with your advice. You’re heading on the “do what feels right” territory. I read scripture several times before understanding it. There were things I felt okay with doing in the first 11 years of my walk with God that I began to understand with fervent study was against God. There isn’t a definitive answer except, like you said, grow with God. Decrease while He increases.

    • @Leofric000
      @Leofric000 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it’s a TH-cam short so ya know it might not always have the most elaboration. But basically it’s not “do what feels right” but rather do what you know with your circumstances is right so long as it doesn’t transgress against God. If I’m able to drink a few beers and be fine but someone else who is a recovering alcoholic and knows that he will go overboard and get drunk if he drinks alcohol then that person has sinned by even touching the alcohol in the first place. Hope I’m clarifying this good.

    • @MrsBrown-jr1rs
      @MrsBrown-jr1rs ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Leofric000 that’s a naive view (and I’m not trying to be rude here). I’ll give an example. It’s bad to lie and steal, but as long I am lying and stealing from a corrupt capitalist corporation, God knows that I am a good person deep inside-after all, isn’t that why Jesus died? It’s bad to murder, but I’m out here in the streets and although I can walk away from a fight, I choose to shoot because it can be reasoned as self-defense. When you’ve lived in a worldview such as the one I’ve experienced, a lot of sins can be reasoned away by seeing yourself as the victim of society and circumstance instead of seeing the world as God’s world with His views. Do what you feel is right isn’t the way to go if you don’t even know what’s right and you read the scripture from THAT vantage point.

    • @Leofric000
      @Leofric000 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrsBrown-jr1rs nooooo no no no like I said some things are sin through and through I’m just saying that certain things can be sinful for some depending on the circumstance like the alcohol example I gave. If you’re an alcoholic it would be a sin to put yourself in that position to fall again on purpose despite knowing the risks vs someone who’s not an alcoholic who can drink one or two beers and not be tempted to make it 4 or 8 beers. Basically it’s taking something that isn’t an inherent sin, like drinking alcohol, and turning it into sin. The murder example you gave is very simple in so much that for it to be self defense it has to be within reason and if you choose to shoot someone who wasn’t particularly threatening to you at the moment God will illuminate you to the error in what you did and then it’s up to you if you want to accept that or not

    Thank you for saying this! There's too much of either fear, a religious mindset, or self-righteousness attached to asking what you can and can't do. Or just being new to Christianity and having heard all kinds of things, it's understandable, but yes, we need to think about the REASONS why we should or shouldn't do things and remember that God sees our hearts and our motives and intentions and He wants us to choose to live in a way where we would be drawn closer to Him and gain His character. Living that way will make it clear what you should or shouldn't do. When you get closer to Him and know His heart and honestly look at your own heart, you will be able to know better.

Hence it's best for most people to trust an authority on doctrine who can be accountable for what they preach to tell what is sinful and what isn't. The temptation to rationally justify sin is strong and affects both fools and the wise.

      I feel like this is not an issue of being "versed in the faith" exactly, but is more an issue of not prioritizing Christ.
      For instance, when I was persuing LGBT junk, the problem was not that I wasn't "versed in the faith". I knew it was wrong, but figured God would forgive me, because I cared more about my idol than I cared about the approval of Christ.
      When I got my priorities fixed, while I did learn more about the nuances of the teachings on the subject, that knowledge alone was not what made me realize the gravity of my sin. It was my right priorities that made me realize it.

I'm reminded of what Paul says about eating food offered to idols. To those who genuinely do not believe in those idols or their power, it's just food, BUT if you feel it would make your brother stumble, or be a bad example, you should avoid it. We see it isn't the ACTION, it's the way it effects you and others.

That how you behave in a game reflects who you are in real life and if you treat the game seriously and act as if what you do matters morally it can improve you, while the opposite, treating it as a joke or a tool for your enjoyment leads to moral downfall in real life.

    I asked this question of my Sunday school teacher when I was 14 or 15. His response was "if you read the Bible, you will find there a lot more things we are allowed to do or asked to do by God compared to the number of things we are told not to do. If we spend our time doing the do's, we won't have to do the don'ts.
    The do's include praying, witnessing, treating others the way we want to be treated, being a good example to others, making a joyful noise unto the Lord, being diligent and faithful with that which God had given us, loving God with all our hearts, minds, and souls, loving our neighbor as we do ourselves, forgiving those who have wronged us, etc. These are the things tells us to work at diligently. We are not directed to say a certain number of Our Father's or Hail Mary's or make a good act of contrition or whatever else the Catholic priest tells you to do, since neither he nor anyone else in the church has any authority to forgive your sins nor to save your soul. None of the works they direct you to do can do anything to forgive your sins nor save your soul nor get you into heaven. It is only by the grace of God that we may enter into heaven.
    If we spend our time doing all of these things, we won't have time in our daily lives to do the things the Bible tells us not to do. That is what Jesus wants us to do, so we may have a new and personal relationship with him. He wants our sincerity and faithfulness, not our daily rituals that only show others how pious we pretend to be. That makes no better than the scribes and pharisees of Jesus's day.
