When this cover version was released U2 issued a statement saying "What have we done to deserve this?".😅.

But millions say the same thing every time U2 release something

I guess U2 were ironic saying this, using the psb hit What have I done to deserve this? as a reference

      They were 🙃

‘Following the release of the single, U2 joked, "What have we done to deserve this?"[10] Tennant mentioned to The People in 2002 that he had "managed at long last to patch things up with Bono" after meeting him at one of Elton John's homes in the south of France.[11]’

At U2's last Glastonbury performance, Bono sung the line "Can't take my eyes off of you" during "Where the streets have no name"

According to rumour the Pet Shop Boys did this because Bono made some disparaging remarks about their 'disco' music .... Neil put U2's song to a beat and medlied it with Can't Take My Eyes off You to show any song could be made into a 'disco' song and the similar rhythm of the two songs

I hope this rumour was true! that would have been a great rebuttal to Bono's remarks :D

The combination of these two songs together is so unexpected, but so magic at the same time
    - the Pet Shop Boys really can do no wrong in my eyes

I love how they completely boiled the piss of that self righteous weapon Bono doing this!

Fun fact: the first seconds of the video where just this synth effect comes and "drives up" is a timelapse of the other video they released at the same time as a "double A-side": HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. Which is also a gem to check out :).

It's a magical mash-up, the melody, the energy, the beat, a song full of emotions and peaceful at the same time, in the way that only PSB are capable of.❤❤❤❤

I love Bono's comment on this song when he was asked about what he thought. He said 'what have I done to deserve this?' :D

YES YES YES 😁 They just wanted to make a cover of THE STREETS ARE NO NAME. But they were in a party and CAN'T TAKE MY EYES OF YOU followin the U2 song. Return studio they studied the situation and found the 2 lirycs song can be mixing together, cause the U2 song is a bit depressive. This is a very good tune (i like the PSB so i cannot be objective). A very good one, not so updated, punchy and high production quality. Let's dance !

It's never been disclosed if U2 knew that they'd written a serious rock song that merged perfectly with one of Frankie Valli's biggest records from 1967.

Completely agree on Ray of Light. Great callout, never caught that before. Of course this pre dates Ray by several years. Madonna is often inspired but makes them her own…

Please note that while it was released within BEHAVIOUR times, the song itself was not part of the album, the other part of the Double-A-side however was.
They did that already with ALWAYS ON MY MIND during ACTUALLY album, where they released singles directly from that album before and after.

What really made me mad was a radio station did not want to play the Pet Shop Boys music since they were "too old." I always thought music was a universal language and if you were good enough from jazz, rock, blues, pop, electronic, disco, or country some songs are timeless and even age like fine wine.

Una mezcla entre u2 y Frankie Vallie.
La melodia de la cancion de u2 es muy similar a la de Franki.
Pet shop boys lo hizo a proposito, para evidenciar a U2.

  • @elpicasoface

My favorite thing about this is that about a year later, U2 (most overrated band ever) would start embracing that ‘disco’ beat!

    • @andygo
      @andygo ปีที่แล้ว

I think that PSB played with the seriousness of U2 and turned it into a happy song. After this cover U2 started losing some seriousness with "Achtung Baby".

I love 'Was it worth it?' .... I think Brothers in Rhythm did a fantastic job with the production. Even though it didn't do as well as the other singles, it was still one of my favourite PSB thompers...
