Francisco Bento Same here at first I was like "Omg this guy is an idot" then i just said to myself that the uduots are idiots and i shouldn't be angry at them xD
That was a fantastic run! I laughed pretty hard twice during the Olmec fight, first when you said you couldn't see how it could not work out for you, and you got the gloves, then the unceremonious way Olmec mashed you into paste on the wall >.< I didn't see that coming at all! A very fun episode indeed and I can only hope that eventually my own attempts go as well as this :D
ok NL it's time you learned; the "i hear prayers to kali" levels are like snake pits with an idol and monty at the top. the second you touch either of them it breaks the skull blocks and you fall into a pit of lava with rubies under the lava. thumbs up so he can stop asking :P
Others probably hate it, but I love it when Ryan starts freaking out because he is in the temple and starts using 40 bombs when he only needs to use 1 or 2. Keep up the freaking out NL!
From what I've read the kapala requires at least 8 drops of blood in order to gain one health and you have to literally chase the blood the enemy drops in order to collect them. Each enemy appears to drop 3 blood droplets in random directions whenever injured/killed. Corpses can also be farmed by throwing a rock at them and collecting the blood which can be repeated multiple times.
"The “Kali prayers” event spawns a trap door area at the top of the map, usually near the entrance. This area contains a damsel and an idol. If you take the idol, the trap door opens immediately and you begin to fall. At the bottom of the pit is lava. Taking the damsel doesn’t activate the trap." - from some website I googled (xbla fans, spelunky section)
"You hear prayers to Kali..." there will be an alternate idol trap that consists of the idol next to a maiden in a pit 3 blocks deep. grabbing the idol will remove the floor, dropping everything into the lava beneath. grabbing the damsel does NOT set off this trap. Additionally, in the PC version the tiles beneath the lava contained rubies. Have yet to confirm this on the Xbox.
The Altar works with "Favor Points", 1 live damsel gives 8 favor points, which is also enough for the first reward ("She seems pleased with you"), one of 8 accessories. After 16 Points you get the Kapala ("She seems happy with you"), and every 16 points after ("She seems ecstatic with you") you get 4 to 8 HP Most monsters you sacrifice give you 1-4 Favor points. (dead Cavemen give 1 Favor for example, Yetis give 4 when alive)
Here's the "I hear prayer to Kali" description: A sacrificial altar is somewhere in the stage, as well as a lot of cultists. You can find a Damsel and a gold idol being stored somewhere, but it's much easier to save the damsel than to save the idol.
"I hear prayers to Kali": A sacrificial alter is somewhere in the stage, and a lot of cultist, you can find a Damsel and a gold idol being stored somewhere, if you grab the idol you die, save the lady!
The "I hear prayers to kali" levels mean that there is a pit with a damsel and an idol on top. If you take the idol the ground beneath you will be destroyed and you will fall in a pool of lava, except if you have a jetpack or a cape.
I know right? He was going on and on about how much the idol was "tapped out" and he never read the text that said "You feel invigorated" or noticed his health shoot up to 15. Then when he did notice it he never put two-and-two together. Classic Northernlion.
Northernlion. PICK THINGS UP. EVERYTHING. In the ice caves, if you pick up a land mine, it deactivates until you put it down again. You can also steal things from the shop (it does anger the shop keepers, but gives you a better chance at getting away) you can also pick up an unbought weapon from the shop and kill the shop keeper with it (works best with the freeze ray or machete)
Hey Northernlion, when the mummies vomit at you they spit out locusts as well as green goo. The green goo acts as blood drops, so they fill the kapala! If you can get the mummy into a position where you can get into the green goo stream without getting hit by the locusts, you can get an easy 99 health!
There's something in the heart of Lord Kali./Kali lights the children's heads on fire/And causes disease to spread/But Kali is our friend/And Kali is the sweethog./Mount the sweethog.
16 Favor At 16 favor, you receive the Kapala, which allows you to collect blood from enemies. Every eight drops you collect increases your HP by one. 32 FavorSacrifice Whoo, high favor! At 32 favor, Kali will fill your bag up to 99 Bombs. If you already have 80+ bombs you will be given an extra 4 to 8 HP instead.
Ryan, this is how the Kali point system works: Damsel/shopkeeper (live) = 8 points Enemy (i.e. Yeti) = 2 points 8 points = item 16 points = kapala 32 points = +8 health (possibly true not sure) 50 points = 99 bombs
Look back, when it says "You Feel Invigorated" you receive 7 health instantly. Happens after you've sacrificed the equivalent of 4 damsels ever since the original Spelunky. Sacrifice more still and you get 99 bombs.
The "You hear prayers to Kali" means the level has an Idol and a damsel being sacrificed above a lava pit which will drop you into it if you grab one of them. Really nothing special as it's easy to get both but that what those levels mean.
Northernlion... Doesn't even realize that the fourth damsel sacrifice gave him that health. He actually thought the kapala, not the altar did it... What a goof!
Correct me if I'm wrong. But the alter works every 8 points? 4 for a damsel, (1?) for anything else. 8 is kapala, 16 is health, 24 is cape and 32 is jetpack? :/
The bombs worked like that in Spelunky Classic, but I've never tested/ seen it done in the remake, so it may or may not still be in there (Hopefully it is!)
scumbag Northenlion: gives a lecture about learning from mistakes - doesn't learn sacrificing 32 points (equivalent to four stunned damsels) gives you an additional 4-8 health points.
Also, Nl, the "secret" of getting Humongous amounts of gold in the City Of Gold is to SMASHING THE WALLS! They're filled with gold. So use your mattock and your bombs and the environment to blow up as much of the level as you can, to get more gold for the daily challenge.
After you get the kapala you will eventually get 8 extra health from the altar, and after maxing out your favor points your bombs will be set to 99. anything past that will give you more health
Also, shopkeepers will forgive you faster if you steal an item without killing them (actually, they may not forgive you at all if you kill them, I forget). But the point is, steal then run, don't kill then steal.
Please northernlion, I understand your choice to not kill shopkeepers (even though the pros far, far, far outweigh the cons and that is the only way to get a crazy high score).. but AT LEAST try ghosting in the ice caves when you see the statue. It has 0 risk since you have to die there anyways, AND will be good practice for you so that eventually you might try ghosting on other levels. As always love the commentary and best of luck!
Spike shoes is bad with kappala, since you one shot the enemies you lost out on alot of blood, although the benefit of being able to kill those big enemies can sometime outweigh the bad side.
I love the way he sacrefices the dog and says "I am now of the belief that the alter is tapped out" at the same time he gets 8 extra health ahahhahaha

not gunna lie when he said it was tapped out after getting 8hp from it i was like nyahh NOTICE IT!! D: lol
you got to 15 by sacrificing the dog

No, after that you get like 7 or 8 health per damsel sacrifice after your 4th sacrifice.
"I hear prayers to Kali": A sacrificial alter is somewhere in the stage, and a lot of cultist, you can find a Damsel and a gold idol being stored somewhere, if you grab the idol you die, save the lady!
Blood - for the blood god. Skulls - for the skull throne. Milk - for the cornflakes.
Man, look at your health when you sacrifice the dog after you get that kapala! O.O

Oh my god... I laughed way too hard at the end of this run. Thank you, man. I love your videos.
A 13:45, when you're saying that you believe the altar can't give you anything, it just gave you EIGHT HEALTH.
Northernlion.
PICK THINGS UP.
EVERYTHING.

0:22 Double spider kill executed elegantly. Deft hands my friend, deft hands.
I love Northernlion's Spelunky videos. He always finds new and innovative ways to die ^^
13:58
You got 8 health from it you ding dong.
There's something in the heart of Lord Kali./Kali lights the children's heads on fire/And causes disease to spread/But Kali is our friend/And Kali is the sweethog./Mount the sweethog.
16 Favor

32 FavorSacrifice
Whoo, high favor!
At 32 favor, Kali will fill your bag up to 99 Bombs.
If you already have 80+ bombs you will be given an extra 4 to 8 HP instead.
Ryan, this is how the Kali point system works:
Damsel/shopkeeper (live) = 8 points
Enemy (i.e. Yeti) = 2 points
8 points = item
16 points = kapala
32 points = +8 health
(possibly true not sure) 50 points = 99 bombs
"Get a ton of health" Gets a ton of health immidiatly. -The Northernlion Story
Look back, when it says "You Feel Invigorated" you receive 7 health instantly.
Happens after you've sacrificed the equivalent of 4 damsels ever since the original Spelunky. Sacrifice more still and you get 99 bombs.
Pretty much; and much harder than it looks!
Lots of secret areas that require a lot of planning to get to (and survive).
The "You hear prayers to Kali" means the level has an Idol and a damsel being sacrificed above a lava pit which will drop you into it if you grab one of them. Really nothing special as it's easy to get both but that what those levels mean.
Gets 7 health, says: "I believe the altar is tapped out". The Northernlion Story
"I am now of the belief that the altar is tapped out" He says as his hp hits 15... northernlion is like the most unaware person
NL, sacrificing the dog at an altar four times gives you 8 health. You did this at 13:45 and didn't realize, so there is a reason to keep sacrificing.
Sacrifices third damsel, gains eight extra health, "I'm now of the belief that the altar [doesn't give anything extra]."
Rants about how the altar is "tapped-out" after receiving Kali's third gift (extra health). -The Northernlion Story
Love the bit at the end
That 5th dog (3rd "item") got you 8 health from Kali. "You feel Invigorated." Massive boon from Kali if you can ever sacrifice enough to get it.
"I hear prayer to Kalhi" : More bird-head dudes, an altar and an idole with a damsel, you die if you take the idol
Sacrifice 1 Monty gets you an Item.
2 gets you the Kapala(sp?)
3 More favor
and 4 Gets you 8 HP. I'm not sure, but I believe that's all.
Northernlion... Doesn't even realize that the fourth damsel sacrifice gave him that health. He actually thought the kapala, not the altar did it... What a goof!
NorthernLion: "I believe the altar is tapped out" Me: *Stares at health go up to 15 O.O"
How the altar works after you get the kapala: there are still more rewards Kali will give you.
I was not expecting him to get crushed along the wall. That caught me off guard.
"I got 15 health somehow"
By sacrificing more damsels after the Kapala, Kali pays out with Health :3
I'm learning how to play Spelunky through watching Northernlion. A sound life choice, right?
Correct me if I'm wrong. But the alter works every 8 points? 4 for a damsel, (1?) for anything else. 8 is kapala, 16 is health, 24 is cape and 32 is jetpack? :/
The bombs worked like that in Spelunky Classic, but I've never tested/ seen it done in the remake, so it may or may not still be in there (Hopefully it is!)
I loved the starcraft reference at 15:33 Northernlion :D
scumbag Northenlion: gives a lecture about learning from mistakes - doesn't learn sacrificing 32 points (equivalent to four stunned damsels) gives you an additional 4-8 health points.

I think a major flaw of NL's game is his inability to not kill something that has no chance of harming him if he doesn't go near it.
When you have the Kappala it's better to whip enemies if it's safe to do so. Jumping on enemies sends you flying away from the blood they drop.
When you sacrifice another kapala's worth of points to kali (after you have the kapala), you get a bunch of health.
Ryan can you show us your Spelunky in-game journal? I'm curious to see how many things you've killed. :3
Also, shopkeepers will forgive you faster if you steal an item without killing them (actually, they may not forgive you at all if you kill them, I forget). But the point is, steal then run, don't kill then steal.
12:26 its the ninja man... the ninja
13:40 "+8 health", well i guess that dosent do anything
"I think the altar is tapped out" northern lion doesn't notice 15 hp
When you sacrificed the dog Kali felt invigorated and gave you max health I think
Yes. The alter was tapped out, that is why you doubled your health. How did he not notice that.
Yes. You have to catch it.
That black market entrance was way too risky and close. Awesome.
Hmm, it seems that when you said you wanted Monty for more health, sacrificing him gave you exactly that.
Even if he would read this and watch the video, he'd forget it after five minutes.
And that's why we love Ryan :)
NL, you got 15 HP for sacrificing 4 damsels to Kaly. The text was "you fell invigoreted"
NL: 90% Dingdong, 10% voice.
13:38 THE ALTAR GAVE THE HEALTH RYAN!!!
"I now believe the altar is tapped out"
*Just gained 8hp*
Good run and i love the green ninja.
13:45 when you sacrificed the dog at the altar it gave you 8 health !
altar gives you 15 health: "Okay the altar is useless"
I think that's because the level is pre-generated, so this can't sadly be patched out or anything.
Silly northernlion doesn't realize Kali pays out with a ton of health after a lot of sacrifices.
4 is an item you don't have, 8 is the kapala, and then every 8 after that is more health.
I think if you sacrifice 2 more damsels you get a big health bonus. (+6 hp on my run)
Is Pleasuretown located near JSMITHtown?
Sacrificing 4 damsels gives you 8 health, Ryan.
If a shop has a mystery box and you're just aften progress you should probably buy it. Could be something real useful.
Please northernlion, I understand your choice to not kill shopkeepers (even though the pros far, far, far outweigh the cons and that is the only way to get a crazy high score).. but AT LEAST try ghosting in the ice caves when you see the statue. The rubies are there in this version as well, I'm pretty sure.
you can use the muzzle flash from the shotgun to light up your area on dark levels
13:40 -- you put dog on altar and it gave you 8 health. I wasn't aware that was possible
Thought he would notice the +8 health boost he got after sacrificing Monty.
"When I record offcamera" - The Northernlion Story.
I'll always take a shotgun on a dark level. You can use it as a light source when you shoot.
that death made me so sadi wanted to see the hell area
Can you explain how to do that? I'd like to know if it's possible.
with the alter you can keep doing it an get more items from it still just like normal gloves spring shoes an stuff.
You can whip the damsel about two times if you have the kappala without killing it, it'll give you blood.
After you get the kapala, you can sacrifice 2 more dogs to get +8 health.
HOLY SHIT just saw the black market entry. Standing ovation, man
When you sacrificed the dog to Kali, you went from 7 to 15 health
at 13:48 he gives the alter another damsel and then his health doubles wow
What I saw was that sacrificing 2 damsels after the kapala gave you about 8 health
Dude, is that Bananapielord music at the end? :o
You got the kapala as early as it's possible because the altar doesn't generate on the first level.
-Doesn't know what alter does after the 2nd damsel- -Fucking leaves instead of trying it-
